B-team practice is now Squalloween

Unless you will be at Varsity tryouts (Saturday, Maetzold, 12:30), Squalloween is the place to be.!

This is an excellent chance to work on your skills, conditioning, spirit and have a great time. The tourney starts at 10 am, but there will be a carpool meeting at Lindberg at 9:15.

What? South High's Annual Hat Tournament
When? Saturday, November 4th, starting at 10am
Where? The fields at Lake Nokomis
Who? HURTems with $10

Just like practice, come prepared for the weather, bring water and some healthy snacks, a light and a dark jersey to go over your costume and anything else you need for the day (inhaler, anyone?). Unlike practice, you'd better have a costume to show how cool you are. It is Squalloween...

Cost is $10 per player, carpool meets at Lindbergh at 9, Leaves at 9:15am. (parents needed to drive)

HAVE FUN!

FRUCHTER SIGHTING!

i found some pics of a huge HS mixed tourney last weekend in Eugene OR.

and Gabe Fruchter is playing. there might be more pics of him, but this is what i found.

and hey - there was talk of going to this tourney, but we weren't able to fundraise enough to do it this year. so if it looks cool, then START FUNDRAISING so we can go to Atlanta this spring, natties in Washington, and then kick the fall off with trips to Oregon and Winnipeg next year!!!!

Captains Practice Cancelled

I am going to be gone until next week and I am sure many of you are tired from the weekend so Captains Practice is canceled for Tuesday and will resume next week.

It will be more reliable starting on Tuesday Oct. 24, when we will have optional captains practices every Tuesday and Thursday for most of the winter.

Here is the general game plan: Meet at the entrance to the Lindberg center (by the spirit shop), we will do a vertical jump program, then some abs, then some upper body weights and finish off with some throwing outside. We should be done by 4:30 or 5:00 but people can leave anytime they need too.

For those of you who have been coming to previous captains practices here is the vertical jump work out plan we have been using: http://docs.google.com/View?docid=d7sxj9n_0d5zpb3

Silver takes silver

Or was it blue takes silver? I can't remember, it was just such an irresistable headline.

Winnipeg started with a long, but entertaining bus ride. After a quick stop at a food court, we breezed through customs and arrived at our hotel around eight. Players relaxed and got ready for the early morning ahead of them.

Saturday started at 6:40am in the hotel lobby. Then everyone bundled up and headed to the local PanCakery establishment. Unfortanetly, the service was not nearly as good as the food and Hopkins was a little late to the fields that morning.

The four games played by Silver that day were disapointingly one sided and no team was able to gain more the three points on Silver.

Blue on the other hand had a more intersting game against SJR JV B, and were able to pull out a win and go 3-1 on Saturday, only losing to the team that would eventually defeat the A-team in the finals.

Saturday ended with a delicious BBQ put on my the HBTS volunteers and a relaxing evening at the hotel, lounging in the rooms and in the pool. There was also some ice bathing for a few brave souls who hadn't gotten enough cold that day.

With such good results by both teams Sunday, they met in the quarter finals. This was a really fun and intense game by both teams. Both blue silver played like they had something to prove.

Blue was even to tie the game at one point before Silver's experience got the best of them.

Blue then continued to the conselation bracket where they faced Memoral highschool and lost a tough game by two in hard cap. They played great defense and was able to mostly shut down the Wisoconson team that had placed second at Eastern Nationals last year.

This loss sent them to the 7th place game where they matched up against the hometown SJR JV A. The teams played neck and neck but SJR was just able to convert more often and got up 7-4 at soft cap. It was now a game to nine. It a great comeback Blue was able to win 9-8.

Some notable plays and players were:
-Robbie Shapiro for MVP, he handled, he guarded deep, he cut deep, he lead his team of new players to 7th place!
-McKenzie Burke won most improved player for the girls and for what I hear she quite the force on O and D.
-Colin Camp won most improved player for the boys and that was very clear. He was skying silver team players left and right and leaving them on the ground.
-Asa Gotlieb got a key handblock in the 7th place match that lead to the game winning score.
-Josh Klane played a great game as well and had some spectacular handling

Back to the silver team, after winning against the Blue team they went on to face the local MN team Cretin (CDH).

This was a riveting game. Silver was able to go up 2-0 right away, however, one CDH got its fast break offence in the groove they were hard to deal with.

Both teams played fast paced O and traded point until four. Then a series of goal line throw aways and mental errors had Hopkins facing a 7-4 half with the soft cap on. Game to nine.

Relying heavily on our insanely good girls, we were able to gain to bring the score to 7-8 them. Hard cap went off. The next point was fast and furious with both teams turning it over too many times and the person causing all of CDH's turnovers was none other than "Captain" "Toucan" David "Iron Fist" "Swilly Canilly" Canillas. He had three, three! layout D's on one point to tie the game at eights.

It was universe point. I can't even remember what happened this point, but suffice to say with our ladies leading the charge we were able to bring home a W and advance to the finals.

Our last game was sadly less fruitful. It was against the second seed Kalvin from Winnipeg. They had just steam rolled SJR and were now waiting in the finals.

From the start of the game we knew this, they had two great players and they were going to exploit them and that proved to be an understatement. While the rest of their team was decent, these two were elite level players. They both played for the Winnipeg club team known as General Strike and were on the starting line of the Canadian Junior Worlds team.

It took us a while to adjust to their give-and-go, blade hucking offence and we went down 7-1 at half.

The next half we learned from our mistakes and played and interesting zone and tried to keep the disc from their two stars and force their other players too throw it away. This was quite effective, along with throwing to our girls and mismatched boys.

Disapointingly, we had already dug our grave and even with our revamped defence we were only able to score five more points until Kalvin wrapped up the game.

It was a tough loss, ending our two year winning streak, but I feel under windier conditions our superior depth and discipline would have won out.

Some notable plays and players"
-Erica Baken won girls MVP with her stellar handling and recieving along with some always delicious lay outs
-Brian "Deuce" Wilson and Steven "Das Boot" Rubinyi won co-mvps with their telepathic hucks and smooth bids
-David "nicknames" Canillas won MIP for his insane D, this was his break out tournament
-Greg "Snuggles" Milbrath had great tourney and was solid speed on D and a reliable cutter and handler on O

please feel free to add anything else:

Exit 69 Recap

We had a great weekend and an awesome start to Hopkins Open Ultimate.

Our first game Saturday morning was against a fellow high school team, Moundsview. We won this game pretty handily even though we were a little slow getting started.

Our next game was against the College team Eau Claire. They were not so experienced and we beat them, trading points until hard cap. Most notable, Sam Brickwedde got a Callahan in this game.

The final game of our pool was against Stout who was on par with Eau Claire. Luckily we won the flip and got the first downwind point. Just like previously, we traded until hardcap and thus won our pool.

We were now moving from the E pool to the A bracket. Our next game was against a number of experienced players, who played in the club circuit as Liquid Assets who had previosly beaten CUT, the #1 seed. They were a little too advanced for our many new players and we lost a good game to them.

That ended Day One. We had lots of players and not everyone got a lot of playing time but we accomplished alot and broke seed.

Day two began a little later than expected...

We "won" our first game against Milwaukee 15-0 ... when they failed to show up to the tournament, so we had a bye until 12:30.

Our first game of the day was against Iowa State. We started out a little slow and they go a few break points on us. Half came at 7-5. We answered big in the second half with two big break points to get a safe lead. The the game got pretty intense and we traded point until it was 11-10 us, game to 13, win by two. We got the downwind to bring it to 12-10. We could have just won the game on the downwind but we were able to score an amazing upwinder to win the game 13-10 and get into the "Chump"ionship (game for ninth place).

Our final game was against the hometeam St. Olaf and we didn't have much of a chance but we were still able to work the disc and get a number of good points.

Overall, we finished 10th out of 32 college and club teams and broke our original seed of 24.

Some highlights and notable plays include:

Greg's huge up wind hucks.

Alters 5 for 5 scoobers including one monster 30+ yarder, additionaly he domminated the skies with a broken toe and a stomach full of McDonalds hashbrowns.

Sam B. got a nice Callahan.

Scar had a great first tournament and was a TMVP runner-up.

I had a some nice break like this one to clinch the Iowa game.

Das Boot won TMVP with just all around consistant play and some beautiful hucks.

HalloWinona

On the weekend of October 28-29 I am trying to get a team going for the college tournament HalloWinona in Winona, Minnesota. It is not going to be officially affiliated and run as a Hopkins HUrt ultimate program, it is instead just an attempt by me to get some of the guys from the team to head down to Winona with me for that weekend and play some disc. If you are interested in going, e-mail me at slr112788@hotmail.com. The cost is going to be 20$ if i can get 12 people to go. If enough women show interest I can put us in the co-ed bracket as well. I need to know this info in the next week so if you want to come e-mail me asap.
-Rubeans, Raboon, Das Boot, etc.

Practice Time Change

It's getting dark too early! Please note that practices on Mondays and Wednesdays with the coaches will now be from 4:15p to 7:15p.
I also encourage you to bring your water in a reusable container so you don't run the risk of leaving garbage on our field and having to do sprints for it. The city of Hopkins is nice enough to let us use their space - let's be responsible citizens!
And for those of you looking to go to Nationals this year (Black and HERt FORCE girls), don't forget to check out the optional Captain's practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3p (meet by Lindbergh center doors). It's a great opportunity to strengthen your body and work on your throws.

Sqall-o-ween!

South Squall is hosting its annual Squalloween hat
tournament in November. Here are all of the details.
. .

When: Saturday November 4th, beginning at 10 AM
Where: at the Nokomis fields
Why: as a fundraiser for South and for FUN!
Cost: $10 per player

For those who are not familiar this is how a hat
tournament works: Every player rates their abilities,
then we toss our names in a hat and mix up the teams.

Don't forget to wear a costume. Bring friends and let
everyone know about the tournament. It should be a
lot of fun!!
