FALL REGISTRATION MEETING

We will be holding our fall registration meeting on Wednesday, September 19th at 7:00pm in room W230 HHS. This meeting is for all parents and players who are interested in playing on any of the Hopkins Ultimate teams this year. We will be going over all the information regarding seasons, practice, games, tournaments, rules, and regulations. Coaches and captains will be speaking and answering questions. Please make it a priority to attend with your player! Registration forms will be available at the meeting. If they are available sooner, we will post a link for them on the blog so you'll be able to download them ahead of time.

Information regarding the official start of practice will be posted soon; we're just waiting for confirmation on all of our field space requests. In the meantime, get outside after school and throw with a friend!

Sorry for the earlier confusion; the meeting is on Wednesday. Thank you to the parents who noticed my mistake and let me know!

YCC VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED!!!

Players and parents, YCC is this weekend in Blaine and they are still in in need of some volunteers. In the post directly below this one, you'll see information and a link that will take you to the MNHSUL website, where you'll find more information and can sign up to help. They are looking for scorekeepers among other things, so you can still watch Ultimate while helping out the MN Ultimate community! This is a really fun event, but just like the Hustle, can only function because of all the volunteers who give their time and energy; lets be a part of that HURt!!

Mid Summer check in

Hurtems & Hertets!

I hope that all of you are taking the opportunity to get better so far this summer.  Whether you're working out, throwing 1000 throws a week, or playing YCC - the best way to get better is to play the highest level of ultimate available to you as often as you can.

There are also some good opportunities to learn by watching coming up:

1) NexGen vs. Subzero @HHS stadium; 4pm on Sunday July 22nd.  There's really no reason not to go watch this: Hurt alums battling it out at the Hopkins stadium with a lot of other talent.  Event details

2) MUDI - @Maple Plain July 28-29th:  A club tournament that includes most of the Hopkins coaching staff, and a lot of Alumni - all in the same place!

3) YCC tournament volunteering/spectating @NSC August 11-12th.  Volunteers are needed for score keeping and other tasks.  These are the best U19 and U16 players in the country all gathered together at NSC.  Several Hurtems and Hertets will be competing.

Watching really talented players compete is a good way to improve because you can apply their strategies/moves/throws to your game.

If you're not sure what you should be doing this summer (other than the Cub Foods truck), please ask one of last year's captains or your coaches.  Don't come back in the fall and regret the throws you didn't throw or the workouts you didn't do.

Remember, too, that RECRUITING is a full year, full time job.  I look forward to welcoming several new Hurtems and Hertets to our family in the fall.  Make it happen!

Banquet details

Year end banquet~

Tuesday, June 5th, 7:00 p.m.
Hopkins Activity Center
33 14th Ave North
Hopkins

Players and parents, please come celebrate a wonderful season of Ultimate with the entire Hopkins Ultimate community! We know this is a really busy time of year, and it's impossible to pick a date that will work for everyone, but we're hoping many of you will be able to make it. Please RSVP in the comments of this post, and let us know how many people in your family will be attending, so we'll have an idea of how many people to expect.

To keep this a free event, we are asking for a few volunteers to provide sweets, like we did last year. If you would like to bring 2 dozen treats, click on this sweets link, which will take you to a sign up sheet. Please plan on arriving a few minutes early, or make arrangements to drop your food off at Sara's earlier in the day. The team will provide beverages.

Cub Foods Fundraiser update

Thank you to everyone who has already worked or signed up to work the 3 required shifts per player at the Cub "weenie wagon". Please check the calendar with the link at the right if you still need to sign up.

We still need 1-2 people for the first shift this week, Thursday, May 31st, 10-2; if you're available please help out! As many of you know, I'm still recovering from a back injury, so it's much more difficult for me to fill in, when there's an open slot in the schedule, than it has been in the past.

State Tournament note for Parents

Parents,

The State Tournament is coming up on June 2-3.  It's over at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

There are a lot of different ways to get involved for the tournament and it's a great volunteer opportunity.  One of the volunteer opportunities is to be a "designated" volunteer for each team - so basically you'd get volunteer credit for hanging out on our Hurt sidelines!  (this would probably include reporting scores for the team, and might possibly include having a radio...)

Please visit the MNHS volunteer page if you'd like to be there: http://mnhsultimate.org/volunteeruc.aspx

Feel free to pass this on to Alumni and anyone else who'd like to help out.
Thanks,
Erin

Field conditions 5/24

Hurtems, Hertets and Parents,

Lindbergh has cancelled all field activities today because HHS3 and HHS4 already have standing water on them.  Varsity - game vs. Eagan is cancelled.

There are a few games that need to be rescheduled in the next week, so please be responsive to team emails/blog posts so we can get that figured out.  The results of these games are important for State seeding.

I think this is the full list of reschedules that need to be made:

Hert vs. Armstrong
JV vs. Irondale (will now be played on Tuesday)
Varsity vs. Eagan

Thanks,
Erin

2012 Hopkins Hustle wrap up

Congratulations to our varsity team, the 2012 Hopkins Hustle Champions!!

A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make this weekend possible; we couldn't do it without you! Despite the crazy Minnesota weather extremes from the Saturday heat to Sunday morning's cold and rain, you showed up and pitched in for a variety of tasks. Some of you were there almost as many hours as Ben and I were! As always, thanks to Mama Brick, who comes back year after year; our most devoted volunteer! We most definitely showed Hopkins hospitality to all of our guests this weekend, and I heard repeatedly from players, parents and coaches of other teams what a great time they were having. Thank you to all three teams who not only played well all weekend, but worked tirelessly to ensure that the fields were able to be played on! The varsity team did a great job lining the fields on Friday, and contributing to the final clean up on Sunday, and the JV and Girls teams made sure the fields were cleaned after both days of play. JV boys also showed up early both mornings to help put out cones, tables, water jugs and lend a hand with anything else we were in need of. All of you were awesome this weekend, and I was really proud of you! We also couldn't do this without our great coaches; if you stuck around Saturday, you had an opportunity to see another side of them as they took on coaches from all the other teams in a spirited game of Ultimate that the kids really enjoyed! Thanks for not only guiding, but entertaining this weekend as well! Finally, Many Many thanks to Ben Feldman, our Tournament Director(and one of our coaches!)for all the hard work that has gone into the last few months in order to make this weekend happen; it was WONDERFUL!

Hustle Signup and Expectations

Hey JV,

Saturday is time to HUSTLE!  Our homegrown tournament is back again for another year out on the lush fields of Maple Plain.  Please sign up if you would like to play Saturday, Sunday, or both.  Carpooling is recommended due to limited parking at the Polo Grounds.  There will be a meetup at Lindbergh on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 7:15, departing 7:25, but rides will not be formally organized.

As in past years, following games on Saturday AND Sunday, JV players will be required to sweep the fields for trash, pick up cones, etc.  Players will not be excused to leave from the tournament on either day until that job is accomplished.  Be prepared to stay late after the games (which end about 4:15 both days) and bring a change of dry/warm clothes in addition to your regular ultimate gear.

Location
Schedule / Scores

First game is at 9AM Saturday.  Please arrive at the Polo Club by 8AM and head out to field 3, which is the third field as you walk along Turner Road from the parking lot.

JV Game @ Bloomington Jefferson

We have confirmed our matchup with Bloomington Jefferson Thursday evening at 6:00.  Please arrive at the fields by 5:15 with cleats on for warm-up.

Field instructions from the Jefferson coach:

The field where we play is slightly different than the one listed online (but only slightly, within sight of the field listed).  The field is in the back of Olson Middle School.  The address for the school is: 4551 West 102nd Street, Bloomington, MN, 55437.  The field is in the very back of the parking lot, so when you turn into the Middle School parking  go to the very back (South end) and the field is right there.

Please sign up in the comments if you wish to attend.  Also indicate if you need a ride from the carpool at Lindbergh.  We are looking for additional drivers.  Please contact Debbi Pavelka if you can drive.

CIVIC CENTER FIELDS

The Civic Center fields are located at 14600 Minnetonka Blvd, behind the police station and ice rink.

Hopkins Hustle Volunteers/participation requirements

We are quickly approching the Hustle this weekend, and we can't make it work without parent participation. It's a great weekend that give us an opportunity to show hospitality to the Ultimate community, and provide them with a first class tournament. For many of these teams, this is one of only a few tournaments they attend each year, and we can't make it a great experience without YOU!!!

Individual teams will find out from their coaches exactly what is required of them.

Rather than hosting a potluck at West Jr High for only a few out of town teams, and the members of our team, we've decided to try something new this year. At the end of the last game Saturday, there will be a Showcase game between either some club teams in town, or possibly coaches; still to be announced. Duing this game we will be serving pizza to ALL teams in order to allow them a chance to enjoy a little time socializing and watching some exciting fast paced Ultimate, played at a level most of them probably are aspiring to.

We are asking EVERY FAMILY to bring one bag/box of cookies, brownies etc. so that we can provide dessert for all of the athletes. We are expecting between 750-800 Ultimate players this weekend, so please remember to bring or send with your player, a contribution on SATURDAY MORNING. We will be storing these in the building next to the tent, but you can drop off at the HQ table any time Saturday morning or early afternoon. THESE MUST BE TO THE FIELD NO LATER THAN 2:00 SATURDAY AFTERNOON. If anyone is concerned about their ability to get them to the field, you can make arrangements with me to drop them off ahead of time, but this shouldn't be your first option.

Thank you to those who signed up at the spring meeting; you will be recieving an email from me confirming that you're still available for the job you signed up for. Don't worry if you didn't sign up then, we still have many opportunities:

PARKING LOT: SATURDAY; 7:15-@9:00A.M, SUNDAY; 7:30-@9:00A.M.
There will be a huge number of vehicles trying to find a spot in the parking lot as all of the athletes start arriving. These volunteers will work for a few hours until the majority of the cars are situated, in order to best utilize the space.

MERCHANDISE TENT: SATURDAY AND SUNDAY; TWO SHIFTS AVAILABLE-
8:00A.M.-12:30P.M. and 12:30P.M.-5:00P.M.

this year we are very excited to have 5 Ultimate coming to the Hustle! they will be selling all of the clothing and discs, so we won't be dealing with any of that. What we are doing this year is selling some concessions. Dobo's Catering will once again be offering lunch options, but we will be selling snacks and bottled water. We're hoping people will like the option of stopping by our tent for a quick snack if the lunch line is long, and parents who are stopping to ask for directions to a field may be thrilled to find some cold bottled water available.

PIZZA DISTRIBUTION
Each team will be receiving a "ticket" or "tickets" in their team pack that will be turned in at the end of the day for their pizzas. Each team will recieve the same number of pizzas, this will just allow us to keep track of who has/hasn't gotten pizza yet.

By clicking on the link below you can sign up for any of the above volunteer positions. Please give me your name, email and or phone #, and the position you want to volunteer for.

Thank you,
Sara

We have practice Monday at the Civic fields and Tuesday at the HHS fields.  These are mandatory for any JV players who wish to play the remainder of the year.  If there is a reason you cannot make Monday, Tuesday, or both, you must let a coach know BEFORE practice.  Attendance will be taken.

5/8 - Practice is on!

I just called up at Lindbergh.  The fields are apparently just fine today.

See you at practice.
Erin

Weather this week

Hurtems & Parents,

Just a quick note to remind you to be checking the blog frequently this week.  The HHS fields absorbed a lot of water over the weekend, enough that they actually cancelled field usage yesterday (luckily, we were over at Civic).

Since it's raining today, it's very possible that the field coordinator at Hopkins will pull the fields.  This notification will probably come around 2pm, but I will call over at Lindbergh to be absolutely sure and will post by 4pm at the latest.

If we get notification that the fields cannot be used, I will post again here and send an email to the Parent Google Group - but I would ask that all of you do your best to spread this information to help us reach everyone.

[Girls - please watch the group chat in the event that Edina's fields get pulled for some reason]

Thanks for your understanding and patience,
Erin

JV GAME VS. SIBLEY -- VENUE CHANGE

Update from Coach Mike (5/3, 2:30pm):  Fields at Sibley have been pulled due to standing water.  However, they have agreed to a game at Hopkins tonight.  Please arrive at Lindbergh no later than 5:15 for warm-up.

Update from Coach Mike (5/3, 12:30pm):  No confirmation yet, but the Sibley coaches are working on alternative field space.  Ultimately, it may come down to how much rain we get this afternoon.

Update from Coach Mike (5/2, 9:00PM):  We have just been notified of an issue with the fields at Sibley.  The Sibley coaches are hopeful the fields will be playable or that an alternative site is available.   Our transportation planning will continue as usual, but keep watching the blog tomorrow for updates.

Original post follows below:Tomorrow's game is an AWAY game!  We have at least 20-25 players going to SIBLEY(map can be accessed by the link on the right, at the game listing). The game starts at 6:00 pm.  Coaches expect players to be there, cleated and ready to warm up by 5:15. We are meeting at 4:15.  Carpools will be leaving Lindbergh no later than 4:30!  If you need a ride and if your parent can drive please post ASAP  on the blog one of these ways:

Name. I need a ride
Name.  I need a ride and my parents can drive me plus # of extra kids.
Name.  I am driving and these team mates are in my car. ( you MUST have had your license for at least 6 months )
Name.  I am playing but do not need a ride there or back.

Parents: I realize this is early and is difficult for those who work, please know that this is a 30 minute drive without traffic and at least 45 during rush hour. If you're leaving from home due to timing, but taking more than your own child, please make sure that all the kids in your car, post with the last option above, so we're not waiting for anyone at Lindbergh. We will be leaving promptly at 4:30 ( or when a car is full).  I will not be arranging one way carpools.  This is a city game and if you're driving there you will be driving back.

As of 6 pm Wednesday evening I am not aware of any parents who can help transport this amazing group of ultimate players!   For those players who played last year.....this is the epic rematch!
Thanks!
Debbi

Granite City Classic - Drivers Needed

Update (5/2, 9:00pm):  Schedules for GCC have been released and are linked  on the right hand panel.  Additional information on day start/end times are in the comments of this thread.  A more detailed post will follow tomorrow.

Waiver update:  The following players should have received a phone call or message from me to inform them that their waivers are incomplete.  Please update with USAU immediately or you will not be able to join us this weekend:  J. Condon, Z. Condon, Elias, Fern, Maynard, Mintzer, S. Stillman.  Contact Coach Mike with questions.

Original post below:

We are planning to send two teams and about 30 players to the Granite City Classic this weekend.  In order for this trip to happen, we need more parents to step up and drive.  Driving volunteers for this tournament is especially critical because it essentially consists of four 70-mile trips (Sat AM, Sat PM, Sun AM, Sun PM).

If the average vehicle holds four players plus a driver, it means we have about 32 driving slots to fill.  30 players and 32 driving tasks means every parent needs to find an opportunity to help this team get to St. Cloud or help it get home.  Or both!  We love spectators and the weather so far is predicted to be nice.

This is our last event outside the metro area.  We also have a road game at Henry Sibley this week, but after GCC, the JV travel schedule will calm down.  Please make every effort to do your part and help the team.  Contact Debbi Pavelka for more details.  We would hate to leave anybody at home.

USA Ultimate waivers

All players who registered before the first of the year were sent an email from Anna Schott, at USA Ultimate, regarding the 2012 waiver update. In past years we've had a special team waiver form that covered our fall thru spring seasons, but this year we used the standard form. You don't have to pay anything; your dues are paid thru 2012,  just follow the instructions in the email to update your information. Most of the JV and girls players who have received this email have not yet updated. Please do this right away. If you have any questions, there is a link to an email address for help at the bottom of the email, or let me or a coach know and we can help you.

Update from Coach Mike:  For JV players, the Granite City Classic is requiring fully cleared rosters this year and those rosters are due ASAP.  Please take time on Thursday to make sure your USAU online account is established and your waivers are cleared.

Madison Mudbath

Players and Parents~ We will be departing for Madison after school on Friday, from the Lindbergh parking lot. With the large number of players and vehicles we'll have, trying to do this in an orderly and timely fashion could be challenging, so please do your part to help make it happen. Go to the bathroom before you come out to the parking lot so you don't need to run back in! Everyone is assigned to a car, so please check in, so we know you're there, and then you'll find out where to go. All of the carpools are team specific, as they will be going to different homes for drop offs and pick ups.

So the parking lot can clear out a bit, and allow us room to all park together, we'll start meeting at 2:50, and be leaving NO LATER than 3:10.

If you think you'll really be doing homework during the drive, then bring it with, otherwise consider leaving your backpack at school or giving it to your parents. There's going to be lots of gear in every car, so don't bring something you don't need.

The following is from an email Erin sent a few days ago to all the parents who've signed up for the parent google group; if you haven't signed up yet, please do!

General knowledge:
- It is actually harder to stay hydrated at a cold/rainy tournament than it is at a warm one.  Your athlete should be drinking at least 64 ounces of water in the days that lead up to the tournament to help their body get ready - and if you're planning on coming, you should too!
- Mudbath does not have a lunch break - that means players should bring enough food to sustain them.  Small servings of easily digestible snacks are best: Protein, Salt, and Sugar/Carbs - granola bars, nuts, beef jerky, gorp/trail mix, clif shot blocks, gu, fruit snacks etc.  Everything your player eats is going to get burnt off almost immediately, so keep away from things that may make your player feel crappy on an empty stomach (dairy, for example, is a no-no).  If you have questions about this, feel free to call me.  Fuel can make a huge difference.
- KITS - toasty warm!  This past weekend at Face Off, we noticed that not all players were ready for the rain/wind - please help them get the necessary gear in their bag.  The alternative is shivering, soaked teenagers.
- Spectators have to be prepared even more than the players (who are running around and therefore warmer than you are) - please be prepared to get cold and wet.  Bring a hat, mittens, warm jacket; wear layers or snow pants, aim for water proof items and shoes that are going to keep you warm and dry in muddy conditions.  You will probably want a chair, a blanket, and an umbrella.  If you have one, bring a tarp!
- Coach tip: I like to hide a dry outfit in my car - something that I can change into after the tournament is over for the ride home.

Packing list for the weekend:
sleeping bag and pillow (players will sleep on the floor)
towel, shower kit, swim suit (we shower at Memorial High School)
your kit (jerseys, shorts, cleats, reusable water bottle etc.)
rain gear: rain coat, trash bag, winter hat, gloves/handwarmers
socks, socks
more socks and additional socks!!!! you can't have to many of these; changing them between games if your feet get wet can make a world of difference.
LAYERS- no cotton!
2x LAYERS (you will get muddy/wet; you will need a spare
outerwear; sweats, a warm jacket
snacks as mentioned above (put them with your kit so you don't forget them in the morning)
A GARBAGE BAG-if it rains you want to keep your gear dry.

Also, remember to pack clothes to change into after showering on Saturday(if you put all this together with your towel, shower kit etc, in a plastic bag, then you won't forget it when you leave for the fields Saturday morning!)

You'll also want something clean to put on for the ride home on Sunday.

We will be stopping both on the way to Madison and on the way home for dinner, which each player is responsible for. Each car decides for themselves, but it's usually some type of fast food. The only other thing you'll need money for is if you want to buy Mudbath gear~ discs, hats, shirts etc.

The final games on Sunday start at 1:45, so we should be leaving Madison by 4 or 4:30.

I'm sure Erin will be tweeting over the weekend, so follow along on our twitter page; @hopkinsultimate

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to send me an email, or contact your team parent.

CUB FOODS FUNDRAISER

We started our weekly shifts at Cub last week, and I'd like to thank all the parents and players who've already signed up for shifts; but there are many more who haven't! please take a few minutes to click on the link at the right under the "upcoming practices and events" heading, and sign up!!! We need and expect 100% participation.

There are still multiple shifts available this Thursday, and I'd appreciate it if I didn't have to spend my whole day there, since I will also be getting things prepped for the team's weekend travel plans.

Madison Mudbath participants

To Clarify for everyone, if you are on this list, you are going to Madison unless we hear otherwise from you. There was not a need to cut any one, but the roster is now closed, so those listed are those who are going.
Parents, Erin sent an email to everyone who has joined the Google parent group; still a small number in comparison to how many players we have. If you want to be receiving these updates with important information, PLEASE sign up on the lower righ hand corner of the blog page.

The following is a list, by team, of everyone who has posted on the blog that they would like to play in the Madison Mudbath tournament next weekend, April 28-29. We will be leaving from the Lindbergh parking lot immediately after school on Friday, April 27th; meeting at 2:45 and leaving by 3:00. If you are on this list, and can't commit to any of this please let us know right away by posting a comment. Also, I have been told there are a few other girls who are planning on attending, but they haven't posted on the blog; please do so ASAP. I need an accurate head count, and this is the only list I'm using!

Parents, if you are planning on traveling with us and didn't receive an email from me, please let me know at semekler@gmail.com.

JV Playing Time

The coaches are well aware of how difficult it is to distribute playing time with such a large roster. We have been looking for ways to get more points for everyone, especially our youngest and least experienced.

We have a couple of excellent opportunities for this to happen, but it requires a larger commitment from JV players and parents. Development of a reliable C team is an important step in the evolution of Hopkins Ultimate, and for those of you who are new to the sport, weekend ultimate tournaments are the reason why so many of us love to play and why we work so hard during the week and the offseason.

We have C team options for two tournaments. In order to accept these bids, we need to have a roster of 25 or more committed players. We have been reaching those numbers for our weekly league games, but not for our tournament sign-ups. If you've been coming to practices and games, please help your team by signing up for these tournaments. If you have a weekend conflict, it's OK to play just Saturday or Sunday. And as a reminder, even if you cannot play, we still expect you to post your status in the comments for the tournament sign-up.
  • The Tournament Director of the Granite City Classic (St. Cloud, May 4-5) has offered us a spot in the B bracket in addition to our confirmed spot in the A bracket. The sign-up is live here. This is a great opportunity for our both our veteran JV players, who can field as competitive a team as possible, and for our younger players, who can get great tournament experience and lots of playing time against similar JV competition.
  • The sign-up for the Hustle (May 18-19) will go up soon. Due to an excellent relationship with the tournament organizers :), we have also been offered an additional bid to this event in Maple Plain.
Both these tournaments are relatively local, but we will need more parents to pitch in and help us with transportation.

Without these opportunities, we will not be able to provide good playing time for all JV players. The coaches are beginning to take attendance at practice and playing time in games will be related to practice attendance. The next six weeks comprise the core of our schedule - the time where players demonstrate the progress we have made this year, and where players have the experiences that are the most memorable. Please help us make the next six weeks even better.

Thank you for contributing to our HURT community.

Just a little information...

I know everybody is excited for next weekend when all 3 teams will be playing at the Madison Mudbath. Initial information will be posted this weekend with further details to come.

We now have a link to our Cub Foods fundraiser calendar on the left side of the blog page under the upcoming events heading. Please remember the requirement of three shifts per family and sign up soon!

Hurt JV Tournament Sign-up: Granite City Classic

The Granite City Classic is coming up in two weeks on Saturday-Sunday, May5-6. Like the Face Off we will be attending, it will be in St. Cloud and we will be driving up and returning home both days. Unlike the Face Off, this will be a full two-day tournament and we will be competing in the A bracket.

Again, there may be roster caps, but it is important that every JV member reply with your status for the event, even if you cannot go. Please post your commitment no later than 9pm on Tuesday.

As we are always in need of drivers, you may also volunteer your parents for carpool duty in the comments (up Saturday, home Saturday, up Sunday, home Sunday, plus number of player passengers).

JV Game @ Benilde, 7:30pm (Updated)

We just got word that Benilde's field space is not available until 7:30. However, this means we will be playing in their stadium, on turf, under lights!

Since the game will be a little later, it's even more important that you arrive at the game properly nourished. We are still working out some details on our arrival time for warm-ups. We will be convening at Benilde (Maps Link) no earlier than 6:45pm, and I will update this post if that time will be moved back.

Update (4/18): There is warm-up space at Benilde, so we will be there with cleats on at 6:45!

Hurt JV Tournament Sign-up: Face Off (Updated)

The JV Face Off is coming up next Saturday, April 21. It is a one-day tournament and is held in St. Cloud. We don't yet have any details on game times or opponents, but you can expect a departure from Lindbergh around 7:00am.

Because we have had such excellent turnouts at our league games, we may have to cap the roster for this and other tournaments. As a result, we will be more closely monitoring the tournament sign-ups.

For this and future sign-ups, I would like every member of the JV to reply in the comments with your status for the event, even if you cannot go. Just indicate whether or not you wish to attend.

For the Face-Off, please post your commitment no later than 9pm on Monday.

Update (4/17): We are in need of a few more parent drivers. Debbi Pavelka is organizing the transportation. If we get additional drivers, we will be able to take everyone who signed up on time.

Spring league games began last week, but JV postponed their first game due to spring break. We just received confirmation that Minnetonka B is available to play a make-up game tomorrow. Instead of practice, we will have our first league game tomorrow. The game is scheduled for 6:15 at HHS, but please arrive no later than 5:30 to warm up. If warm up space is not available right away, we will have a rules refresher.

Get out and throw today if you can. Bring your game face tomorrow (plus water, disc, light, dark).

Cub Foods Fundraiser

The time has arrived once again to start spending Thursdays at Cub Knollwood, in the "weenie wagon" as Cub likes to refer to it! As we discussed at the spring team/parent meeting, this is the fundraiser that has enabled us to support all three teams in a variety of ways. Registration fees are lower than they were 2 years ago, all major tournaments that involve travel are subsidized, all local tournaments are paid for, we're able to offer scholarship money to families who need it, so no player is ever turned away, and for the 2nd year in a row, the Madison Mudbath Tournament will be a free tournament for all who attend. We can't continue to make this happen without full participation from ALL families. It was announced at the meeting that all families will be required to work 3 shifts over the course of the 6 1/2 months we will be at Cub. This means at least one person from your family, or representing your family at a shift. We've had grandparents, family friends, neighbors, babysitters; please be creative and find ways to fulfill this requirement without making us hound you! We love to have the players there as much as possible, because they definitely get more tips than the adults! But, that being said, there MUST always be at least one person 17 or older working each shift; no one younger that 17 may use the grill. It's great if you can sign up to work as a parent/player team, or players can sign up together if there is already an adult or varsity player signed up for any particular shift. When you look at the calendar, you will notice that there are 3 sign-up spots for each shift and an optional spot for extras; we need at least 3 people at every shift, more is fine. If you are signing up together with a family member, use one sign-up spot. If you have any questions, please contact Sara at semekler@gmail.com.

Madison Mudbath 4/27-4/29

All teams~
Madison Mudbath is fast approaching, and it's time for everyone with an interest in attending to let us know. Players for all 3 teams, please post in the comments below if you are sure you're able to go. If you are on the JV team, please remember that posting your desire to attend does not automatically mean you will be going; depending on how many people are interested, we may have to make decisions about who will be going. Please remember, just like with Winnipeg, signing up quickly is important, but doesn't guarantee you a spot if you haven't been to a single practice all spring.

Players and parents~
We will be traveling with parent drivers again this year, which enables us to make this a free trip for all players! This is what our hard work at Cub helps us pay for. I've already heard from a number of parents who've expressed an interest in going to Madison this year, but I need a firm commitment at this point. Parents, please post in the comments section if you want to travel with us, and if so, how many players you can accomadate in your vehicle.

Parents all stayed at the AmericInn last year, which is just a few minutes from the fields. We're reserving a block of rooms again, so please let us know if you would like one. As soon as I have a price I'll let you know.
UPDATE-
We've received a group rate of 89.90 per night plus tax for rooms at the AmericInn. These are all rooms with 2 queen beds. Please email Sara, if you would like one held for you, at semekler@gmail.com.

JV Spring Tournaments -- Response Needed

I know spring break is upon us, but please take a minute to read this message, reply in the comments, and encourage your JV brothers to do the same.

We are looking to firm up the JV tournament schedule for this spring. Specifically, we are considering events for the two weekends surrounding Mudbath. There are tournaments in St. Cloud both weekends:

Face Off is a Saturday-only tournament on April 21. This is a B/C tournament only and has been held on Mudbath weekend in the past. This year, it is held the weekend before Mudbath.

The Granite City Classic is Sat/Sun, May 5-6. Last year, we played in (and won) the B pool of this tournament, but some players have indicated a preference to play in the varsity pool this year, as we have most other years.

We cannot commit to these tournaments unless we have commitments from players. Again, we will not submit a bid unless players express interest in the comments. We would need a minimum of 10 players for Face Off and 12 for GCC, as well as at least 3 parent drivers for each of the 3 tournament days. An official sign up will follow closer to the tournaments, but we need to know that we can field a competitive team.

Keep in mind that this schedule would include 3 tournaments over 3 consecutive weekends. Last year's schedule had the same tournaments except for the 1-day Face Off. Some of the tournaments have changed weekends, but last year's schedule did include three 2-day tournaments in a row, so you can use that as a reference.

Thanks, and have a great break.

Chicago Invite Departure

Quick reminder to all Hurtems and Hertets leaving for Chicago this weekend.

You must have your kit ready to go right after school - the carpool is leaving by 3pm at the latest!!!
Look for a post by your captains regarding a packing list.

Parents - remember that you also need layers, rain gear, good shoes, a chair etc.  Spectating is often harder than playing because you get cold.

Call me if you have questions.
Erin

Sunday, March 18, 2012

This week's practices: week of March 19

Hurtems, Hertets and parents.

You may have noticed the weather!  Here's what we'd like to do for practice this week, if you have specific questions please talk to your captains.

Girls:  Monday and Wednesday this week right after school (please check the spreadsheet and facebook for details about carpools etc).  Question?  Shosh or Mia

JV:  Tuesday and Thursday at 5:15pm at Lions Park.  Questions? Kaminsky or Lieberman

Varsity:  Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm at Lions Park.  Questions? Bum, Y, or Z

Please be eating plenty of good food and try to drink [at least] 2 water bottle's worth of water every day before you come to practice.  It's that time of the season where we work you hard, and your body needs all the help it can get.

Parents, if your kids are starting to ask about cleats or other gear - their captains and teammates are an excellent resource.  Also, if any Hurtems have still not received a disc for registering, please let your captains know and we'll send a stack of discs to practices.

WELCOME TO THE SPRING 2012 OUTDOOR SEASON!!!

Erin

Worlds Tryouts 2012

Burlington, WA was the host of Junior Worlds Tryouts this weekend.  Three Hurtems had the incredible opportunity to tryout with 80 other open players from around the country.  Eli, Fink and Bumsted are just finishing up their tryouts right now; and we've heard that the competition has been fierce - that everyone gave 110% and that it was a truly valuable weekend regardless of the fact that it was 39 degrees and raining for most of the weekend.  Toasty Warm Indeed!
The Hurt Family is proud!
When we know who made the team etc, we'll be sure to let everyone know.

Varsity - outdoor practices this weekend

I'm looking at 2pm both Saturday and Sunday for outdoor practices on Lions.  Please join the conversation about these on GroupMe.

CHICAGO INVITE

Varsity and girls team members who are playing in the Chicago Invite, please let us know in the comments section of this post. We will be leaving right after school on March 23rd, from the Lindbergh Center parking lot. We're traveling with parent drivers, and need an exact number of players in order to ensure that we have enough seats for everyone. We may rent a 12-15 passenger van if we know we'll need the extra space. PARENTS, PLEASE LET US KNOW AS WELL IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US, IF THERE IS A PARENT I HAVEN'T HEARD FROM WHO'S PLANNING ON GOING, WE NEED TO KNOW ASAP.

The team will be subsidizing part of the trip for everyone with our fundraising money, so the cost to each player will be $50.00. Please send your check to me this week or bring it to Zach at practice on Sunday. You must have it in before we leave on the 23rd.

We'll be staying at a La Quinta not far from the fields in Naperville. They serve breakfast in the morning, and dinner will be provided at the field on Saturday. We'll have field snacks, and lunch on Saturday, although you should also bring your own snacks that are specific to your tastes, as well as a reusable water bottle. You will need money for dinner on both Friday and Sunday nights, which will be at some sort of fast food along the way.

If you have any questions, you can email me at semekler@gmail.com

Varsity Practice Tonight 2/29

Parents & Varsity Hurtems,

All Hopkins after school activities were cancelled today.  We called around.  Activities were cancelled in order to give all the Buses some extra time to get kids home due to driving conditions.

However, Glen Lake is still open and all the facilities coordinators I spoke with are okay with us practicing tonight and we're not expecting any more snow to accumulate. So...

Practice is still on!

If you have questions or concerns, please call me: 952-484-7316.  Ultimately (ha!), parents are welcome to make a judgment call and keep their players at home tonight - we understand.
Thanks,
Erin

The JV and Varsity teams will be traveling separately to the tournament. The Varsity players are driving themselves, are leaving earlier, and will be staying later than the JV team. JV players are meeting at Lindbergh at 10:45 with a departure no later than 11:00; please be on time, because we will not be waiting for late arrivals! You will be assigned to a car when you arrive. The parents of all JV players should have received an email from Debbi Pavelka, JV team parent. If you didn't, please let us know so we can get you on the list. As of right now(Friday afternoon) there are just enough spots for JV players in parent vehicles traveling to and from St. Johns; it's to late to sign up at this point unless your parent is planning on driving, in which case you should contact Debbi(d.pavelka@me.com) or Sara(semekler@gmail.com). Spring team meeting-March 4th

Sunday, March 4th, 7:00 pm, West Jr High cafeteria

We'll be holding our spring meeting 3/4, with players going directly to the structure for Sunday evening practice immediately following the meeting. This meeting is important for both players and parents to attend; we'll be discussing the whole spring season. Players, please make it a priority to attend with at least one parent.

After an all team meeting, we will break out into individual teams so you'll be able to receive team specific information, and parents can ask any questions they may have of their players coaches.

We'll be talking about the Hustle, which will be taking place May 19-20 this year. There are requirements of each team, which we'll discuss, and we ask for parental support in order to make sure all of these tasks are completed. We also need parent volunteers to make the Hustle happen; we can't do it without you! We'll have sign up sheets for various opportunities, so please be prepared to choose something that suits you.

Other topics of discussion;
Spring season games
Tournaments
Fundraising

Looking forward to seeing you all March 4th!

If you would like to attend, please post in the comments - use my example as a guide:

Chicago Invite

The Varsity and Girls teams will be traveling to Naperville Illinois March 23-25 to play in the Chicago Invite. We need to make a decision in the next few days regarding transportation. I need to know how many parents are planning on joining us this year in order to determine whether we can carpool again or we need to use a bus. There's a big difference in the overall price of the trip depending on the mode of transportation. This is a really fun tournament to attend; I can't promise you perfect weather, but every parent who's gone to the Chicago Invite before will tell you they had a great time and watched some awesome Ultimate! The team will reimburse drivers for their gas, but you are responsible for your own hotel room. We haven't finalized our hotel reservations yet, but generally stay at a hotel that serves a free breakfast, and try to keep the cost around $80.00 a night.
Please email me, by the end of this week, at semekler@gmail.com if you (or your parent, if you're a player) are interested in traveling with us.

Someone left their Audi keys at Varsity practice. Pokey has them. Call me to claim!

U of M Tourney!

Girls Attending the Tournament this weekend:

Please be at the Lindbergh parking lot no later than 11:45 am on Saturday, we are leaving at 12 noon. We are carpooling to the University of Minnesota, so we need you all to be there on time. You will probably be home between 4 and 5 in the afternoon, depending on our schedule.

Remember to bring: warm clothes (we may have to walk outside a bit), WHITE and BLACK shirts, cleats, tennis shoes (just in case), a disc, at least one reusable water bottle, food (to share if possible), your permission slip, and anything else you need (inhaler, tape, etc.).

You will need a parent/guardian to sign this form for you if you are under 18, so please have it signed and ready to go Saturday morning. The link below will get you to the form.

If you have any more questions, please let us know! If you have committed to coming, we expect you to be there, your team is counting on you.

Practice schedule information - Winter 2012

Hurtems, Hertets and Parents,

Now that we have all of our practice locations set, you will be able to find up to date practice information on the side navigation, both in the "upcoming events" and "Hurt Calendar" features.

We are trying to get these items scheduled as far in advance as we can.  Sunday practices, for example, are already entered into the Calendar until the end of March.  Weekday practices are dependent on coach availability, so we may not be able to set those so far in advance.

I've also added our Spring 2012 tournaments.  Some of these tournament dates are tentative.  For several of these tournaments we will be submitting a bid to attend, but our participation is not guaranteed.  This list will be updated as our bids are accepted and dates solidify.

To reiterate, it is every Hurtem or Hertet's responsibility to check the blog, most of the family checks it every day.

If you have a player that is new to Ultimate at Hopkins, please refer to the registration details in the sidebar or contact Sara Mekler.

Varsity Team Meeting

The time has come to begin thinking about the upcoming season and what we want to accomplish. On Wednesday the 18th, at 6:30, we will be having a team meeting as well as a potluck dinner at my house. We will be talking about the season as a whole and this meeting is just as mandatory as practice.

Each age will be given a type of food to bring, don't be afraid to be creative with your contribution.

Sophomores- Salads (There are only two of you so please make them generous)

Juniors- Main courses (please keep in mind you are providing main courses for the whole team between the four of you)

Seniors- Due to how many seniors there are it will be divided by posistion.

Handlers- please bring drinks (Either a case of individual cans or a gallon/liter of something)

Cutters- you will be bringing desserts

The food will be great and this is another opportunity to get to know your brothers better. once again, this is a mandatory meeting, so please be in attendance.

My adress is 12410 Huntingdon Ln Minnetonka

See you all on Wednesday

Sunday Practice time change

We were able to move our Sunday practice up to early afternoon.  Noon until 3pm.

Please remember to bring your own water, a disc, and a light/dark jersey (that is not gray).  Please don't practice in the shoes you wear to walk through the parking lot, bring a dry pair.

See you Sunday!
