DUCs Testing
Following the Parent/Player meeting, we will have our regularly scheduled 7-9p practice. However, this will be a bit different this week as we will be doing the Degrees of Ultimate Competency testing. This will consist of the written test (Ultimate and Hurt vocabulary, Xs and Os, rules test, etc) and part of the physical testing. For your viewing pleasure of what the complete test will consist of, check out the link to your right for DUCs Phase 1. Please bring your own writing utensil and notebook paper!
If you are new to Hopkins Ultimate this year and are not comfortable with taking the test at this time, there will be a Hopkins Ultimate Clinic for you, held by your friendly neighborhood coaches, Russ and H. Take notes if that's your thing, but be ready to do some drills too.

WANTED: People to help get fliers out for the Chili's Fundraiser!
Monday is the Chili's Fundraiser, and we really need to get some fliers out around different places.
This is where fliers need to get out:
-HHS (being taken care of)
-North (being taken care of)
-West: any one able to put some fliers up there??
-HHS parking lot on Monday
-Businesses around where the Chili's is located
Monday, does anyone have a free block and would be able to put fliers on people's cars??
I'm looking for as many as we can get, because it will go by fastest, main and Lindbergh
For the Businesses around Chili's, I would say, it needs to be done sometime this week, either Thursday or Friday: as many people that can help with that, that would be great!
I should have all the fliers printed out tonight.
Please post in the comment box if you can help with any of this... we need a lot of people to help with this so it can be done fast, and we can get the word out to more people
It is at the St. Louis Park Chili's from 4-10
Thanks

Varsity Boys win St. John's Indoor
In somewhat last minute form, the Varsity boys came together so that we could fulfill our commitment to sending 2 teams up to the St. John's one day indoor tournament.
Under the coaching direction of Greg Arenson and Robbie Shapiro, the JV boys also attended.
The Varsity boys faced Southwest High for their first game. The JV boys watched from the sidelines as they were in another pool and not scheduled to play until the next round. The game got off to a quick start for us and we were quickly ahead 13-2, but the Southwest coach (Chris Van Holmes) and I (coach Lou) agreed that we shouldn't waste the time and space, so we continued to play until our time was up. The boys finished with 20+ points and were primed to play another 5 games.
Next, the Varsity boys faced Eden Prairie. Defensively, the boys had some adjustments to make since the EP squad was much tougher. EP made some great plays and had a few lucky bounces go their way and finished with 5 goals, compared to Hopkins' 13.
Up next was Cretin Derham Hall. The Varsity boys had faced them a few weeks earlier in Duluth and were victorious. The boys rallied together this time and came out with some serious fire and energy, on the field, on the sidelines, and between points. Before we knew it, it was halftime and we were ahead of a very frustrated CDH squad 7-1.
The second half, however, belonged to CDH, scoring the first 3 points out of half. And then just a few points later, it was 11-10, Hopkins still leading, but barely. We called a timeout, relit the fire, and came out the next point and scored in just 3 throws -- the last being a huck to Simon Gottlieb. Recharged, the defense forced a turn on the second throw of the next point and punched it in for the game winning score. Hopkins wins 13-10.
We then went into bracket play and the two Hopkins teams were forced to face each other in the quarterfinals. Lou took the coaching reigns of the JV team for this game. The JV team looked AWESOME! They hucked it successfully several times, regularly got open downfield against Varsity defenders, and even skyed a some Junior and Senior Varsity players! Half time score was 7-4 and the JV put up one more in the second half. The JV team scored as many points against the Varsity as the Eden Prairie team did.
That was the last game for the JV team, finishing without a victory in the standings on the day, but it was a huge victory in terms of team progress. The improvement throughout the day was not only noticeable, but impressive! If this team can continue to make such great strides, then the future of Hopkins ultimate is incredibly promising!
We then had a rematch with EP in the semifinals with similar results. EP is a good team with some great leadership -- both in players and in coaching. We have some close friends on that team and enjoy the games we have against them. The final was 15-4.
In the other semifinal game, CDH had fallen behind Cathedral 9-4, but were storming back when time ran out, so we would face Cathedral in the finals.
It was the best game Hopkins has played this season. Cathedral is a team that doesn't turn it over. We were forced to come up with big defensive plays to get the disc. And that's just what we did. Greg Arenson's amazing downfield D, Mat Grewe's great dump D, and just an overall great team performance were just downright inspiring. The excitement was contagious and we took half 8-4.
The second half included a few missed opportunities, including a couple miscues in the endzone, but it did not slow down the massive momentum we had going for us. This is a sign of the progress this team has already made this season. Despite the setbacks, no confidence was lost and we just marched forward toward our goal. We put up point after point until we had won 15-8.
After the game, I spoke with a few of the Cathedral parents, who were numerous in attendance. They are a great group of people and they remind me of the great support group we have here at Hopkins. I look forward to the contribution the Cathedral community will provide to the ultimate community in the near future.

- The Got(t)lieb supernatural connection is something special to watch
- Steve Finn can sky!
- The progress by Smalter and Ethan is to be admired
- To the JV team: we couldn't have done it without your support!

Head's up for ladies:
The Executive Committee decided we should do an all-team player/parent meeting to inform everyone of our spring schedules and expectations; this date has tentatively been set for Sunday, 2 March from 5:30-7p (then the kids are there and ready for our 7-9p practice).
As the ladies' team had a meeting scheduled for next Sunday, hopefully you have that time blocked of for Ultimate-related stuff. We would like to put together a Playbook Practice for that day from 4:30-6, then we'll hit Chipotle or somewhere in downtown Hopkins, and be ready for regular Sunday practice at 7p at the Structure.
Please continue to check the blog for updates. And thanks for a great practice yesterday!

St. Johns Indoor 2/16
Hello all. As you will have read from Russel's previous post, the St. Johns Indoor high school tournament in St. Cloud is coming up a week from tomorrow, February 16th. THINGS TO KNOW:
1) Varsity captains will be coaching the teams in St. Cloud
2) This is a one day tournament! You need to arrive at the Lindbergh Center at 11 am Saturday morning, and we will be returning home after midnight, so parents need to sign off on this!!!!
3) If you would like to attend, you must notify one of the varsity captains (Greg Arenson, Sam Brickwedde, Gregg Milbrath, or Robbie Shapiro) by e-mail by Friday the 15th.

JV St. Cloud Indoor
Next Saturday, the 16th of February, there is a one-day indoor tournament at St. Johns. It lasts all day and finishes late. Who wants to go? Can you (or get a parent to) drive? If we have more interest than spots, I'll make determinations based on 1) practice attendance/communication, 2) response time to this post.
JV Practice on Saturday
For those of you that need a reminder, practice is this Saturday at 2 pm at the JCC. Afterward, we'll either find a room at the JCC to chat or go to Chipotle. There's some dates I want to run by you and I want to share some things about the team and season, so let me know if you can't make it.

JV meeting Postponed . . . Again
I haven't been pushing the meeting agenda very hard, and there was an obvious error in the date of the previous JV meeting post, but 3 people confirming the date is not enough. So I'm pushing it back till 4 pm after practice next Saturday the 9th at the JCC.
We do need to meet to discuss some important issues, e.g. leadership, hammer out tournament dates and interest, and make sure everyone will have a Jersey.
