JV - Hustle Update

Hey JV Players and Parents -

Here's what you need to know about the Hustle this weekend:

Saturday - Our first game will be at 9:00 AM on Saturday morning. We will be playing Mahtomedi B on field 14 (southwestern corner of the polo grounds). Please arrive no later than 8:00 AM and plan on staying at the fields until approximately 5:00 or 5:30. We may or may not be playing a 3:40 crossover, but we will need everyone to stay and help pick up after the crossover games on Saturday.

Potluck - Don't forget about the potluck dinner at West Jr. High at 5:30. JV families are responsible for supplying salads for all 5 out-of-town teams and 3 Hopkins teams. Dishes are due at West Jr. High by 4:30.

Sunday - Please be back by 8:00 AM on Sunday morning for our first game at 9:00. We will play our final game at 12:20 on Sunday regardless of our tournament standing.

It's a great weekend for ultimate. Let's be great hosts to all 34 participating teams!

Sleep Over at Jeanine's Dad's House

Just a reminder that we are all sleeping over at my dad's house Friday night! Come anytime after 5pm. We will probably have dinner at about 630pm. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow, food(see below), and your tournament gear.

I need some help with the food. There are 18 of us if you all come along. I will take care of the main course (pasta) and Erin and I will be getting you Dairy Queen for dessert since we still owe you guys.

So this is what we need. Talk to each other and figure out who's in charge of what:

Seniors
Bread- a couple of baguettes
Snacks/Appetizers- chips and dip, veggies, fruit and/or other snacks

Juniors
Breakfast-Bagels and cream cheese, muffins, cereal, fruit, anything you need for tournament day
Smores stuff? If you want it, we have a fire pit

Sophomores
Drinks- juice, soda, lemonade, whatever you guys want to drink for breakfast and dinner- we will have milk

I'm getting excited!

Hopkins Hustle Potluck - Everyone has a role!

This weekend is the Hopkins Hustle. Many people have been putting together the final details.

The potluck on Saturday is a great community event. The out of town teams hosted by our club's families shower at West Junior High and then dine with our three teams in the cafeteria.

Reminder: Deliver your food donation to the West Jr High cafeteria between 4:30 and 4:45 pm. on Saturday, May 22nd. Please use disposable plates and utensils or clearly mark your dishes and plan to pick them up. If you can stay and help monitor the potluck, contact Laurie Levin at levinlaurie@hotmail.com

Players check with your parents to see if they remember their potluck assignment. It is important so that we can feed all those hungry players -
Girls team - bread and dessert
JV Boys team - Salads
Varsity Boys team - Pasta entrees

Thanks much!

Huge fundraising opportunity

We have just been offered the chance to run the hotdog/brat sales at Cub Foods Knollwood EVERY Thursday this summer, earning $400.00 a week. This means we could start out next fall with four times the amount of money raised this whole season...This is a HUGE chance for us to lower the cost of tournament travel for all three teams, and still allow us to have funds for other needs as well. We need to make a commitment for at least most of the Thursday's from June 3rd-August 26th(they will run it themselves if we can't make one or two). We will need 2-3 people there from 10:30-5:30 which can be divided into 2 or 3 shifts(possibly overlapping). Right now I just need people to let me know what kind of availability they would have so I can kind of plot out what we can do. We need PARENTS too!! Even if your son or daughter can't work with you, grab a friend and take a shift; remember, it will help defer costs when we're writing out those checks for trips next year! Please post as soon as possible and then I will let everyone know once we have a schedule worked out.

Western Nationals Travel details

Meet at Door 6 by Delta ticketing area at 1 p.m., Friday. (Mimi Klane will be there.)

The flight is Delta 2053, scheduled to depart MPLS at 2:40pm

Make SURE to bring a photo ID.

I would encourage all of the boys to travel with only carry on luggage, but if they want to check a bag there is a $25.00 charge for the first bag, $55.00 for the second, each way, unless they have elite status on Delta as a frequent flyer in which case it's free. You are responsible for this additional cost if they do choose to check a bag; please let us know ahead of time if you think you will be doing this; that way we'll know if we need to build extra time into the check in process.

The rule for liquids in carry on luggage is 3-1-1. Each individual item can be no larger than 3.4oz, everything must fit in 1 quart size zip top bag, and each passenger is allowed only one.

Each passenger is allowed one piece of carry on luggage as well as a smaller item such as a brief case, laptop case, purse(doubt we'll have any of those!) etc. A jacket and food/beverages purchased in the airport can also be carried on.

Note: Sara left early for Washington and will meet the players when they arrive. If you have questions regarding the trip, please contact Sheri at slbrenden@comcast.net.

Rule Myths

Hurtems,

Over the past week or so I've seen our players encounter some calls that could have been handled better, both at Mudbath and at league games.

To avoid these situations at Nationals and State, I'm going to assign some reading material for everyone.

UPA Rules blog - Calls & Contests you are welcome to read the whole thing, but the part that's the assignment starts at Rule Myth: "It's the receiver's call"

You can stop reading immediately following the discussion of "check feet" as an imaginary call.
Please keep in mind that knowing the rules is part of your job as a Hurtem.

It's a gorgeous day for ultimate, have fun.

Varsity Schedule and Update for 4/28-29

First off, congrats to the girls' team for a great win vs Cretin last night!

Like the JV team has done, due to field availability concerns, the Varsity team is moving our game on Thursday 4/29 from a home game at Lindbergh to an away game at Robbinsdale Armstrong HS. Meet at Lindbergh at 4:30 to carpool.

Thank you to Armstrong and Coach Mike Berseth for being able to accomodate our field space request in ways that has been difficult from our own school. Right now, they are figuring out which of two (two!!!) guaranteed (guaranteed!!!) field spaces we'll be using; once that is decided I will update this information on the blog.

Tonight, Wednesday, we'll be practicing at Lindbergh at 6 PM. Meet near the climbing structure and we'll be there if the space allotted for us is open. If not we may be scrambling. Such is life as noble warriors. Remember, there is still time before nationals! Be there! Get your brothers to practice!!!

The JV is looking for additional players and we would to invite players from the other two teams to play with us at the Granite City Classic. While many of the Varsity boys and girls are busy with something called prom this weekend, those of you who are not attending prom should consider joining us in St. Cloud.

If you are interested, please sign up in the comments below. Cost is $15 for one day and $25 for two.

Also, drivers desperately needed.

Boys Varsity at South

Where: Powderhorn Park (14th Ave S and 32nd St)
When: Thursday. carpool meeting time at 4:15, game at 6.
Traffic will be bad, especially on 394 E. Hopefully we can start warming up at 5. I'm sure you have a normal meeting spot etc., ask your captains if you're not sure where to be.
FYI, both Mikey and Lou are out of town tomorrow - so you're stuck with me.
Erin

JV Game vs. Eden Prairie B

Please be at Lindbergh with cleats on by 5:15 in order to warm up for our league game tomorrow vs. Eden Prairie B. We will be playing on either field 9 or field 10. Other sports have the fields reserved until 6pm, so DO NOT INTERFERE with any games / practices going on. In fact, if a game runs long, there is a chance we may not be able to use the fields right at 6pm.

If there is not a suitable place for warm-up, we will have to wait until space opens up. It is unfortunate that we are in this situation, but ANY disruption to other teams will have serious consequences for our club's ability to practice and play at Lindbergh.

See you tomorrow. GAME TIME!

Madison Mudbath- Bring your tennis shoes!

So it looks like it supposed to rain all weekend in Madison. Please bring tennis shoe in case we are not able to use the fields at some point. They will have back up indoor opportunities available.

Also remember that if we are outside that you will need warm and appropriate clothing. 55 degrees and raining can be quite chili. This means bring winter hats, mittens, hand warmers, raincoats, tights, plenty of socks, umbrellas and any layers you have that dry quickly and can keep you warm while wet. NO COTTON!

MADISON MUDBATH - APRIL 23-25

ATTENTION PARENTS

Madison Mudbath is coming up quickly. Just want to put in a plug to get a few more parents to enjoy all the tournament offers. You'll have a wonderful time watching the elite teams of the tournament - Hopkins' teams. Being a chaperone at this tournament is about the easiest chaperone job you can get.

  • Ride the coach with us. We still have plenty of room. (The coach is even equipped with WIFI and DVD. It's a really tough life.)

  • Help collect the athletes each morning from their host homes (on the bus, real tough duty).

  • Cheer on and support our teams (we have 3 teams playing in the tournament).

  • Help fill water bottles.

  • Just be there to help in any way our coaches and athletes need.

  • Help make sure the athletes all get back to their host homes or actitivities in the evening.

  • Relax in the luxurious accommodations of the Radisson West Madison Hotel each evening (including the Sleep Number bed in your room) while the athletes enjoy the supervision of their host parents and coaches. Each morning, enjoy a full hot breakfast buffet at the Radisson, included with your room.

  • Spend most of your time just watching WITH PRIDE the classiest athletes of the tournament - our kids. (Now, this really is a tough job, but someone has to do it!!!!)

Parent Bus Rides:
For parents wishing to go, you are welcome to either drive yourself, or ride the bus with us. Roundtrip bus is only $75 per person.

Hotel Reservations:
We have reserved a block of rooms at the Radisson Hotel Madison at only $79 per night (90.46 per night, including 14.5% taxes). A hot buffet breakfast is also included with your room. Rooms can be reserved in your name beginning tomorrow morning (Monday, April 19). Just let them know you're with HOPKINS ULTIMATE. Any problems, let me know or ask for Fred in Sales at the hotel. If you're interested in more information about the hotel, please visit the following link:

http://www.radisson.com/madisonwi

Radisson Hotel Madison
517 Grand Canyon Drive, Madison Wisconsin 53719,

Driving Directions:
Driving directions to Madison and the playing fields (and Radisson) can be found by clicking the following link: http://www.mapquest.com/mq/8-QjvMxU38STboY189

For your own GPS, the address for the tournament is:
James Madison Memorial High School
201 S. Gammon Rd.
Madison, WI 53717

Also, I will probably need a bit of help when loading the bus. Please don't just place luggage under the bus as it will need to be separated by team so it will be easier when we drop athletes off at their host homes. If you have any questions, please call me at 612-508-6965 or at jdailey@healthmarketer.com. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you at the tournament.

JV Practice Schedule

This week, JV practice will likely be held on either Monday or Tuesday. We will be working on things we want to lock down before Mudbath. If you are attending Mudbath and either Monday or Tuesday presents a conflict for you, please comment below.

Check back on the blog later this evening for more details on this week's schedule.

JV Tournament Sign-Up - Granite City Classic

We have a big league game this week against Eden Prairie B (home opener!), and an even bigger weekend coming up in Madison. But, May is just around the corner and we have another tournament looming in St. Cloud. The Granite City Classic is a two-day tournament on May 1st and 2nd. Please sign up in the comments if you are interested. Here are the key details:

Departure: We will be coming home on Saturday night, so departure will be from Lindbergh at 7:45AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Return: We should be home on Saturday around 7pm, give or take an hour. Sunday's return time will depend on the results of our Sunday games.

Transportation: Actively looking for parent volunteers to drive. Please contact Jennifer Kreiman at kacheljak@usfamily.net if you are willing to drive.

Cost: $25 for the weekend, $15 if you can only attend one day. Cost includes tournament fees and transportation.

This is a really fun tournament and close to home too. Please comment below if you can come. As with other tournaments, we may have to cap the roster depending on interest. Please sign up by noon on Sunday, April 25 if you would like to come to this tournament. That means if you are going to Madison, try to sign up this week.

Parents going to Madison April 23-25

We have three teams of players going to Madison next weekend. Now we are wondering what parent fans are interested in making the trip as well. There may be some spots on the bus or, of course, you can drive. John Dailey is checking on hotel options. If you plan to make the trip, could you comment below and let us know if you want to ride the bus.) (It really is a nice way to travel. We would like some chaperones on the fields, although you won't be spending the evening with the players since they and the coaches have lodging with Madison host families.

Hustle Housing Details

I have now received responses back from almost all of the teams planning on attending The Hustle and needing housing. Please help out by hosting a team.

1. Boys team- with 20 players needing housing and 4 adult chaperones also staying at the house. Nobody requires specific accommodations in regards to presence of animals and or type of food. The team can sleep on the floor, you don't need a bed for every person!

2. Girls team- with 18 players and 4 adult chaperones also staying at the house. Two players are vegetarians.

3. Boys team- may have girls on team, and 2 adult chaperones staying at the house. A few players have peanut allergies.

4. Boys team- with 24 players and 4 coaches (all willing to sleep on the floor). No specific accommodations necessary known at this time.

5. Girls team-with 16 women and 2 adult female chaperones. No dietary restrictions or other special needs.

We are waiting to hear from last team but please check with your parents immediately and let me know as soon as possible, preferably by Monday, April 19th. I will be sending an email to parents as well.

POP Skills Clinic

POP is hosting an Ultimate skills clinic for high school girls this Saturday 4/17!

Details can be found on the registration form here

Please talk to Coach Jeanine or Coach Erin for more info.

Host Families needed for the Hopkins Hustle

Hopkins ultimate players and their families,

For the Hopkins Hustle Tournament, we need six families to host teams in their homes.

The tournament that our program puts on, Hopkins Hustle, is over the weekend May 22-23rd. It's a fantastic addition to our program and requires lots of volunteering. As most of you know, when we travel to some tournaments, we are hosted by a local family in their home.

Visiting teams will have their own transportation and sleeping bags. All the host family needs to do is to make a breakfast and snacks for Saturday and Sunday morning (ultimate players are not too picky).

I will be posting more information about each team but please note under the comments if you would be willing to host or if you have questions.

Madison Mudbath --- April 23-25

Greetings,

A big weekend is approaching -- All three Hopkins teams are playing in the Madison Mudbath. If you intend to participate, we'll need to hear from you in a comment as soon as possible. We may have to cap our numbers so the sooner you let us know, the more likely you can be included on the trip. The coaches will, of course, have the final decision on who goes.

Lodging:
Each team will spend two nights with a host family in Madison. And, of course, our players are known as polite and pleasant guests. Host families ask for us! Hold up the reputation!

Cost:
$95/player for registration ($250 for each team - yikes!), safe travel by bus, coach travel expense and per diem, host gift and some field food.

You must be signed up for the trip by Friday, 4/10. Check must be made out to "Hopkins Ultimate" and delivered to your coach or Sheri Brenden (2317 Archers Lane, Minnetonka, MN 55305) no later than Friday 4/17.

The tournament provides bagels/fruit on the field and a wonderful potluck on Saturday night.

Departure:
Meet at 3 p.m. Friday (4/23) at Adath Jeshurun, 10500 Hillside Lane West . Leave at 3:15.

Tournament ends at about 3:30 p.m. or so on Sunday 4/25. We should arrive back at Adath Jeshurun at about 9 or 9:30 p.m.

Please sign up as soon as possible by adding a comment to this post. Again, participation is limited, so sign up soon so the coaches have a chance to prepare for the tourney.

Thanks,
John Dailey

Help a brother out.....please!

So, as you guys know, I am not able to play at nationals....yet.
My family and I have posted a page on facebook that is called Let Eli Leonard Play at Nationals.
I would appreciate it so much if you would all join this group and follow the directions in the information. It would help all of us out greatly(you wont have to hear me complain anymore). Please help and make the UPA realize the right thing to do and allow me to play. I love you all
Kitty

MNHS Ultimate Leage Games Next Week

Hey Everyone -

I hope you are enjoying your spring breaks! When school starts back up on Monday, we get right back into it and the MN HS League starts!

Girls first game is Tuesday, April 6 at 6 PM.
Boys' JV and Boys Varsity first games are Thursday, April 8 at 6 PM.

As we don't have access to the Lindbergh fields until the week of 4/12, expect this week's games to be "away" games. Plan on meeting at the high school around 4:30 to carpool. Assume all three games will be at different locations as well. JV parents, if you are planning on attending and can drive, please post in the comments, as the JV team has the biggest need for rides. The schedule for the first half of league play will be finalized by the league board over the weekend, but expect all 3 Hopkins teams to be playing away games this week.

Why does the schedule not come out until 3 days before games start? Because the registration deadline for MNHSUL was just this week. The first half of the schedule will be finished by Monday at the latest, and the second half of the schedule will be decided based on the first half results.

We will post the first week schedule (and a link to the MNHS Ultimate schedule) once it is finalized.

Thanks,
Mike

Western Nationals - tickets available

First, huge thanks to Varsity players and parents for getting their checks in for plane tickets to Seattle. I appreciate you working with a short turnaround.

Second, you may have heard that we were unable to put together the minimum roster for our girls team. Unfortunately, we won't be able to send HErt to Western Nationals.

That means that we have some plane tickets available for those Varsity players, parents and adult fans who would like to book a ticket. (We will not accept non-playing students unless they are traveling with their parents.)

The fare is $333 and you can book it on your credit card. Send an email to Lisa Ratner at ratnerlisa@hotmail.com about your interest before April 1. That's the deadline and Delta doesn't make exceptions. It would help the club avoid eating deposits if you booked with Lisa so please consider this option.

Spring Break

Hopkins spring break starts today - enjoy your time off.

We won't have any scheduled practices next week, but if anyone wants to get together to throw, you can always use Lions Park.

CHICAGO INVITE UPDATE: DAY 2 CANCELED

Thanks to Luke and Kelly Johnson for putting this tournament on, we appreciate the chance to come and play this weekend.

Parents, please follow the @hopkinsultimate twitter feed to the right for continued updates throughout the day on what time Hurt and HERt will be arriving back at Adath.

Extraordinary conditions in Chicago

Both teams worked through difficult conditions today -- wind, snow, rain, cold and lots of mud. It was a battle to manage clothing, keep fingers warm and get a foothold in the field. They performed admirably and made Hopkins Ultimate proud.

Hurt Spring 2010 Assignment #1

Players, Coaches, Parents!

Here's a quick assignment as the spring outdoor season is upon us.

Read the rules.
Or, re-read the rules.

As you all know, Ultimate is a self-officiated sport and the responsibility for upholding the rules is on YOU. Know your rights. Know the rules.

Here is a link to the rules through the UPA site: http://upa.org/ultimate/rules/11th
Here is a (printable) Adobe PDF version: http://upa.org/files/11th_ed_Final_3_6_07.pdf

There will be a quiz. Questions about the rules? Post them in the comment section. Thanks.

JV White Jersey Error

Hello Hurt'ems,
Unfortunately, the company that we ordered our jerseys from made a pretty big error on all the white jerseys. We are going to have to collect all the whites this week so we can send them back and get them fixed and looking better than ever. If you are a JV player who goes to North Junior High then bring your white jersey to school to give it to your captain Drew Locketz. If you go to West Jr. High, then you will give it to your other captain Benji Mosow. If you go to a school other than Hopkins then you will have to find a time this week to drop it off at either my house: 120 Kentucky Ave. North, Golden Valley or Sheri Brenden's house: 2317 Archers Lane, Minnetonka. Benji, Drew, and Aaron: we will need to collect your blacks as well so they can print a "C" on your jerseys. Sorry for the inconvenience. The sooner we get the whites collected, the sooner they will be fixed.

Thanks,

Captain Klaney
