Player/Parent Meetings this weekend!

Ultimate Spring Meetings for all players and parents:
Instead of everyone attending Sunday's meeting, we will deal with spring information at two separate meetings. That should be more convenient and we'll have enough meeting room space.

The girls's team was already planning to meet at 2 p.m., Sat., Feb. 28 at Emma Peaslee's, 2317 Archers Lane, Minnetonka. (If you go to this event, you will not need to attend the Sunday meeting.)

The two boys' teams will meet at 5:30 p.m., Sun., March at Lindbergh, rooms N205/206.

We'll share information about tournaments, coaches and league play. We need to get parents to sign off on tournament participation

I'm sorry to report that the jerseys are a little behind schedule and will have to be distributed later.

Housing for the Hustle

Just a heads up that soon I will be looking for families to host teams for the Hustle. So start thinking about if you would like to host a team for the tournament this year, and within the next month I will be asking for families to host. Let me know if you have any questions.

Spring All-team meeting March 1 (5:30 p.m.)

Leagues and tournaments are approaching. Jerseys will be arriving. We want players and parents to gather for a Spring organizational meeting Sun., March 1 at 5:30 p.m. at Lindbergh in rooms N205/206. We want to find out which tournaments players will be attending and talk about travel, chaperones and the Hopkins Hustle.

Practice will follow at the North Junior High structure. Please invite anyone you know who is interested in joining the team.

Reminder about Swing Dancing on Saturday!

So the girls team decided we are going swing dancing and we would love for the boys to join us!Here are the details:

When: Saturday February 7th,Lesson at 7:30 PM, Dance at 8:30PM

Where: Tapestry Folk Dance Center
3748 Minnehaha Ave S.Minneapolis, MN 55406

What: Swing dance lesson and social dancing with a live band called the Swing Beat Big Band

Who: Everybody! All ages are welcome, no dance experience necessary (that's what the lesson is for) and you don't need a date cause there will be a ton of people there to dance with

Why: Because dancing is a ton of fun and you could impress that special someone on Valentines Day with your new amazing dance abilities!

Cost: $8 for students (you must show a student ID)/ $10 for adults

Ultimate Peace

Folks,

This was passed on by Rachel Abrams and I think that some of you would like to know about this, and possibly even donate. It sounds like a great cause.

Hello,
I am writing about a very serious issue. Many places around the globe are at war with each other and it never seems to end. Well, a fellow Ultimate player has decided to do something about it -

David Barkan has led and played on The Jam (1979-1980: SF South Bay), Hostages (1980-84: Boston), East Bay Firestorm (1988-91: Oakland), Double Happiness (1992-1995: San Francisco), and Matza Balls (1995-present: SF Bay Area).

Last year David co-founded the Ultimate Peace organization whose mission is to bring youth in war torn areas around the globe together through Ultimate, and for their first project is working with the Peres Center for Peace in Israel. They are traveling to the area in April 2009 and will lead a youth Ultimate training and leadership program with hundreds of disadvantaged Israeli and Palestinian kids who would likely otherwise see the other only as an enemy. The American coaches will convene a clinic and tournament with all the kids and their respective coaches in Tel Aviv, then travel to the various communities and continue the work locally. The goal is let these young people play Ultimate with each other and learn they can all get along.

This will be a "first of its kind" and with David's experience from his Matza Balls team trip to Israel in 2005, he has the potential to sow the seeds of peace. If you have 5 minutes, this Peres Center for Peace video is amazing and makes it very easy to imagine how perfect Ultimate could be to promote understanding. Personal donations are needed now to pay for the following:

• Equip each youth with full uniforms, including 2 jerseys, one pair of shorts, hat, and professional disc.
• Support local teachers/coaches to continue teaching Ultimate with official Ultimate Peace coaching manuals in Arabic and Hebrew.
• Help transport and house the volunteer coaches from the USA.
• Support the production of the event-insurance/licensing/site/medical/food.
• Send participants back home with gear (Ultimate field sets, discs for the community, dvds).

Spring Ultimate Plans

Wondering about the Ultimate schedule ahead? We don't have access to much indoor practice space right now. But we are making plans for our impending outdoor season. Mark your calendar now. Our captains and coaches are submitting bids for several tournaments. We don't have certain acceptance yet, but here are the dates you should know about. Parents, start thinking about which destinations interest you cause we'll need drivers/chaperones.

March 21-22, Chicago Invite, college tournament for Varsity Boys

*Spring League begins in April*

April 18-19, Paideia Cub, Atlanta, GA, Varsity Boys and Girls
April 25-26, Madison Mudbath, probably all three teams
May 2-3, Granite City Classic, St. Cloud, JV Boys
May 9-10, Hopkins Hustle, (Maple Plain Polo Grounds) all three teams and many volunteer opportunities!
May 16-17, Western Nationals, Blaine, MN, Varsity Boys and Girls
May 30-June 1, Minnesota State High School Ultimate Tournament, Maple Plain, all thee teams

We plan to have a Hopkins Ultimate spring informational meeting in a few weeks to provide more information and answer questions. As soon as we know when and where, you'll see it here on the blog.

JV Boys have practice at Williston from 5:30 - 7 PM on Tuesday 2/3.

No practice for Girls or Boys Varsity on this day.
