JV Shorts - Response Needed

The club has graciously decided to pick up the tab for our shorts order this year.  In order to receive your pair of Five Ultimate shorts, you must post the following in the comments:

Your name
Jersey number
Shorts Size

If for some reason you have not yet received your jersey, post that in the comments and the coaches will look up your number for you.

For those of you who signed up on Facebook, the design will be the same -- but you must sign up again here.  You must post the information above in the comments thread by 10PM Thursday (May 3rd), if you want to be included in the order.

USA Ultimate waivers

All players who registered before the first of the year were sent an email from Anna Schott, at USA Ultimate, regarding the 2012 waiver update. In past years we've had a special team waiver form that covered our fall thru spring seasons, but this year we used the standard form. You don't have to pay anything; your dues are paid thru 2012,  just follow the instructions in the email to update your information. Most of the JV and girls players who have received this email have not yet updated. Please do this right away. If you have any questions, there is a link to an email address for help at the bottom of the email, or let me or a coach know and we can help you.

Update from Coach Mike:  For JV players, the Granite City Classic is requiring fully cleared rosters this year and those rosters are due ASAP.  Please take time on Thursday to make sure your USAU online account is established and your waivers are cleared.

Madison Mudbath

Players and Parents~ We will be departing for Madison after school on Friday, from the Lindbergh parking lot. With the large number of players and vehicles we'll have, trying to do this in an orderly and timely fashion could be challenging, so please do your part to help make it happen. Go to the bathroom before you come out to the parking lot so you don't need to run back in! Everyone is assigned to a car, so please check in, so we know you're there, and then you'll find out where to go. All of the carpools are team specific, as they will be going to different homes for drop offs and pick ups.

So the parking lot can clear out a bit, and allow us room to all park together, we'll start meeting at 2:50, and be leaving NO LATER than 3:10.

If you think you'll really be doing homework during the drive, then bring it with, otherwise consider leaving your backpack at school or giving it to your parents. There's going to be lots of gear in every car, so don't bring something you don't need.

The following is from an email Erin sent a few days ago to all the parents who've signed up for the parent google group; if you haven't signed up yet, please do!

General knowledge:
- It is actually harder to stay hydrated at a cold/rainy tournament than it is at a warm one.  Your athlete should be drinking at least 64 ounces of water in the days that lead up to the tournament to help their body get ready - and if you're planning on coming, you should too!
- Mudbath does not have a lunch break - that means players should bring enough food to sustain them.  Small servings of easily digestible snacks are best: Protein, Salt, and Sugar/Carbs - granola bars, nuts, beef jerky, gorp/trail mix, clif shot blocks, gu, fruit snacks etc.  Everything your player eats is going to get burnt off almost immediately, so keep away from things that may make your player feel crappy on an empty stomach (dairy, for example, is a no-no).  If you have questions about this, feel free to call me.  Fuel can make a huge difference.
- KITS - toasty warm!  This past weekend at Face Off, we noticed that not all players were ready for the rain/wind - please help them get the necessary gear in their bag.  The alternative is shivering, soaked teenagers.
- Spectators have to be prepared even more than the players (who are running around and therefore warmer than you are) - please be prepared to get cold and wet.  Bring a hat, mittens, warm jacket; wear layers or snow pants, aim for water proof items and shoes that are going to keep you warm and dry in muddy conditions.  You will probably want a chair, a blanket, and an umbrella.  If you have one, bring a tarp!
- Coach tip: I like to hide a dry outfit in my car - something that I can change into after the tournament is over for the ride home.

Packing list for the weekend:
sleeping bag and pillow (players will sleep on the floor)
towel, shower kit, swim suit (we shower at Memorial High School)
your kit (jerseys, shorts, cleats, reusable water bottle etc.)
rain gear: rain coat, trash bag, winter hat, gloves/handwarmers
socks, socks
more socks and additional socks!!!! you can't have to many of these; changing them between games if your feet get wet can make a world of difference.
LAYERS- no cotton!
2x LAYERS (you will get muddy/wet; you will need a spare
outerwear; sweats, a warm jacket
snacks as mentioned above (put them with your kit so you don't forget them in the morning)
A GARBAGE BAG-if it rains you want to keep your gear dry.

Also, remember to pack clothes to change into after showering on Saturday(if you put all this together with your towel, shower kit etc, in a plastic bag, then you won't forget it when you leave for the fields Saturday morning!)

You'll also want something clean to put on for the ride home on Sunday.

We will be stopping both on the way to Madison and on the way home for dinner, which each player is responsible for. Each car decides for themselves, but it's usually some type of fast food. The only other thing you'll need money for is if you want to buy Mudbath gear~ discs, hats, shirts etc.

The final games on Sunday start at 1:45, so we should be leaving Madison by 4 or 4:30.

I'm sure Erin will be tweeting over the weekend, so follow along on our twitter page; @hopkinsultimate

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to send me an email, or contact your team parent.

CUB FOODS FUNDRAISER

We started our weekly shifts at Cub last week, and I'd like to thank all the parents and players who've already signed up for shifts; but there are many more who haven't! please take a few minutes to click on the link at the right under the "upcoming practices and events" heading, and sign up!!! We need and expect 100% participation.

There are still multiple shifts available this Thursday, and I'd appreciate it if I didn't have to spend my whole day there, since I will also be getting things prepped for the team's weekend travel plans.

Madison Mudbath participants

To Clarify for everyone, if you are on this list, you are going to Madison unless we hear otherwise from you. There was not a need to cut any one, but the roster is now closed, so those listed are those who are going.
Parents, Erin sent an email to everyone who has joined the Google parent group; still a small number in comparison to how many players we have. If you want to be receiving these updates with important information, PLEASE sign up on the lower righ hand corner of the blog page.

The following is a list, by team, of everyone who has posted on the blog that they would like to play in the Madison Mudbath tournament next weekend, April 28-29. We will be leaving from the Lindbergh parking lot immediately after school on Friday, April 27th; meeting at 2:45 and leaving by 3:00. If you are on this list, and can't commit to any of this please let us know right away by posting a comment. Also, I have been told there are a few other girls who are planning on attending, but they haven't posted on the blog; please do so ASAP. I need an accurate head count, and this is the only list I'm using!

Parents, if you are planning on traveling with us and didn't receive an email from me, please let me know at semekler@gmail.com.

JV Playing Time

The coaches are well aware of how difficult it is to distribute playing time with such a large roster. We have been looking for ways to get more points for everyone, especially our youngest and least experienced.

We have a couple of excellent opportunities for this to happen, but it requires a larger commitment from JV players and parents. Development of a reliable C team is an important step in the evolution of Hopkins Ultimate, and for those of you who are new to the sport, weekend ultimate tournaments are the reason why so many of us love to play and why we work so hard during the week and the offseason.

We have C team options for two tournaments. In order to accept these bids, we need to have a roster of 25 or more committed players. We have been reaching those numbers for our weekly league games, but not for our tournament sign-ups. If you've been coming to practices and games, please help your team by signing up for these tournaments. If you have a weekend conflict, it's OK to play just Saturday or Sunday. And as a reminder, even if you cannot play, we still expect you to post your status in the comments for the tournament sign-up.
  • The Tournament Director of the Granite City Classic (St. Cloud, May 4-5) has offered us a spot in the B bracket in addition to our confirmed spot in the A bracket. The sign-up is live here. This is a great opportunity for our both our veteran JV players, who can field as competitive a team as possible, and for our younger players, who can get great tournament experience and lots of playing time against similar JV competition.
  • The sign-up for the Hustle (May 18-19) will go up soon. Due to an excellent relationship with the tournament organizers :), we have also been offered an additional bid to this event in Maple Plain.
Both these tournaments are relatively local, but we will need more parents to pitch in and help us with transportation.

Without these opportunities, we will not be able to provide good playing time for all JV players. The coaches are beginning to take attendance at practice and playing time in games will be related to practice attendance. The next six weeks comprise the core of our schedule - the time where players demonstrate the progress we have made this year, and where players have the experiences that are the most memorable. Please help us make the next six weeks even better.

Thank you for contributing to our HURT community.

Just a little information...

I know everybody is excited for next weekend when all 3 teams will be playing at the Madison Mudbath. Initial information will be posted this weekend with further details to come.

We now have a link to our Cub Foods fundraiser calendar on the left side of the blog page under the upcoming events heading. Please remember the requirement of three shifts per family and sign up soon!

Hurt JV Tournament Sign-up: Granite City Classic

The Granite City Classic is coming up in two weeks on Saturday-Sunday, May5-6. Like the Face Off we will be attending, it will be in St. Cloud and we will be driving up and returning home both days. Unlike the Face Off, this will be a full two-day tournament and we will be competing in the A bracket.

Again, there may be roster caps, but it is important that every JV member reply with your status for the event, even if you cannot go. Please post your commitment no later than 9pm on Tuesday.

As we are always in need of drivers, you may also volunteer your parents for carpool duty in the comments (up Saturday, home Saturday, up Sunday, home Sunday, plus number of player passengers).

JV Game @ Benilde, 7:30pm (Updated)

We just got word that Benilde's field space is not available until 7:30. However, this means we will be playing in their stadium, on turf, under lights!

Since the game will be a little later, it's even more important that you arrive at the game properly nourished. We are still working out some details on our arrival time for warm-ups. We will be convening at Benilde (Maps Link) no earlier than 6:45pm, and I will update this post if that time will be moved back.

Update (4/18): There is warm-up space at Benilde, so we will be there with cleats on at 6:45!

Hurt JV Tournament Sign-up: Face Off (Updated)

The JV Face Off is coming up next Saturday, April 21. It is a one-day tournament and is held in St. Cloud. We don't yet have any details on game times or opponents, but you can expect a departure from Lindbergh around 7:00am.

Because we have had such excellent turnouts at our league games, we may have to cap the roster for this and other tournaments. As a result, we will be more closely monitoring the tournament sign-ups.

For this and future sign-ups, I would like every member of the JV to reply in the comments with your status for the event, even if you cannot go. Just indicate whether or not you wish to attend.

For the Face-Off, please post your commitment no later than 9pm on Monday.

Update (4/17): We are in need of a few more parent drivers. Debbi Pavelka is organizing the transportation. If we get additional drivers, we will be able to take everyone who signed up on time.

JV Game Tomorrow

Spring league games began last week, but JV postponed their first game due to spring break. We just received confirmation that Minnetonka B is available to play a make-up game tomorrow. Instead of practice, we will have our first league game tomorrow. The game is scheduled for 6:15 at HHS, but please arrive no later than 5:30 to warm up. If warm up space is not available right away, we will have a rules refresher.

Get out and throw today if you can. Bring your game face tomorrow (plus water, disc, light, dark).

Cub Foods Fundraiser

The time has arrived once again to start spending Thursdays at Cub Knollwood, in the "weenie wagon" as Cub likes to refer to it! As we discussed at the spring team/parent meeting, this is the fundraiser that has enabled us to support all three teams in a variety of ways. Registration fees are lower than they were 2 years ago, all major tournaments that involve travel are subsidized, all local tournaments are paid for, we're able to offer scholarship money to families who need it, so no player is ever turned away, and for the 2nd year in a row, the Madison Mudbath Tournament will be a free tournament for all who attend. We can't continue to make this happen without full participation from ALL families. It was announced at the meeting that all families will be required to work 3 shifts over the course of the 6 1/2 months we will be at Cub. This means at least one person from your family, or representing your family at a shift. We've had grandparents, family friends, neighbors, babysitters; please be creative and find ways to fulfill this requirement without making us hound you! We love to have the players there as much as possible, because they definitely get more tips than the adults! But, that being said, there MUST always be at least one person 17 or older working each shift; no one younger that 17 may use the grill. It's great if you can sign up to work as a parent/player team, or players can sign up together if there is already an adult or varsity player signed up for any particular shift. When you look at the calendar, you will notice that there are 3 sign-up spots for each shift and an optional spot for extras; we need at least 3 people at every shift, more is fine. If you are signing up together with a family member, use one sign-up spot. If you have any questions, please contact Sara at semekler@gmail.com.

Madison Mudbath 4/27-4/29

All teams~
Madison Mudbath is fast approaching, and it's time for everyone with an interest in attending to let us know. Players for all 3 teams, please post in the comments below if you are sure you're able to go. If you are on the JV team, please remember that posting your desire to attend does not automatically mean you will be going; depending on how many people are interested, we may have to make decisions about who will be going. Please remember, just like with Winnipeg, signing up quickly is important, but doesn't guarantee you a spot if you haven't been to a single practice all spring.

Players and parents~
We will be traveling with parent drivers again this year, which enables us to make this a free trip for all players! This is what our hard work at Cub helps us pay for. I've already heard from a number of parents who've expressed an interest in going to Madison this year, but I need a firm commitment at this point. Parents, please post in the comments section if you want to travel with us, and if so, how many players you can accomadate in your vehicle.

Parents all stayed at the AmericInn last year, which is just a few minutes from the fields. We're reserving a block of rooms again, so please let us know if you would like one. As soon as I have a price I'll let you know.
UPDATE-
We've received a group rate of 89.90 per night plus tax for rooms at the AmericInn. These are all rooms with 2 queen beds. Please email Sara, if you would like one held for you, at semekler@gmail.com.
