Hold Back the Snow/Winnipeg Oct 12-14

Details: HBTS will cost players $200.00 and chaperons will be charged $100.00 for the bus ride and $100.00 per night for the hotel room. We will travel by bus, MN coaches, Inc. is the carrier. The team and chaperons will be staying at the Holiday Inn/Airport in Winnipeg. The hotel is 1/2 mile from the playing fields. We leave from Adath parking lot at 2pm on Friday and return to same by around 1 AM Monday morning.

Payment: Please write your check of HBTS this week! You can pay either by check (payable to Hopkins Ultimate) or pay from your Paypal account. If you use Paypal, you will need to add $6.00 (3%) onto a $200.00 transaction, to pay for the ease of use I am told. We have used Mike Schock's paypal account last year and will use that account again this year (docschock@comcast.net).

At the border: All players will need to have a notarized permission document plus either a valid passport or drivers license/permit/Minnesota ID card and copy of birth certificate. We have a .doc copy of the form on this blog.

Bus $3580.68 +tip
Hotel: Each room is $104 CA
Extra: Coaches costs room, travel, per diem for food
Extra: Late night snacks, field food (not generally necessary)
Extra: $215.00 CA for meeting room on Friday pm to orient players to rules/ norms and game play for week-end.

Hat Tournament Flier

Here is our Hat Tournament and Clinic Flier, which includes a waiver for all participants to sign. The flier should come in handy for promoting the event, as I know all of you are doing diligently.

Senior High Boys Practice

As was announced at the meeting on Sunday, practice will be held at Hopkins West Junior High on Thursday from 5:00-7:00.

Be ready to play (shoes on, warmed up, stretched) by 5pm.

As Jake pointed out yesterday, we play in all sorts of weather save lighning, which can usually only be determined on site. So JH practice at Burns Park is still on for 4:30 today.

Hold Back the Snow is the first tournament of the year (07-08). This is a mixed tournament and we will be sending two co-ed teams to play. In each of the past 4 tournaments Hopkins has won three and placed 2nd in one.

Below is a Q & A fragment taken from the US state department web site re: necessary documentation.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise or to travel by vehicle across the land border to Canada or Mexico?

No, but it is recommended that U.S. citizens carry and present government-issued identification when requested. Although not currently required to present a document, U.S. citizens arriving by land and sea must still establish to the satisfaction of the inspecting officer that they are U.S. citizens.

UPCOMING CLINIC

Please post your reply and name here if you are willing and able to help lead a clinic for kids who are unfamiliar with Ultimate. This will be on Saturday Sep 29th from 1-4p at Maetzold Field in downtown Hopkins (in lieu of our regularly scheduled practice).
Coaches will plan the clinic, but we'll need helpers to mentor, model, and possibly facilitate drills and whatever else we come up with. This will be Ultimate 101 in three hours to gear them up for some knowledge of the game before participating in our hat tournement the following day.

Stormy Weather?

As is the rule with Ultimate, we will be having practice as scheduled if it is raining, cold, hot, snowing, hailing or sleeting. The only time we will postpone/cancel practice is in the event of LIGHTNING which can usually only be determined at the fields.

So unless you hear otherwise from your captains, I'll see you at co-ed practice tonight (Burnes Park, 4:30)

Contest - Design a Bumper Sticker

Youth Ultimate Design Contest!

The Ultimate Players Association is launching a contest for a bumper sticker design that best conveys the spirit of youth Ultimate.

It could be a slogan, a graphic or a concept – whatever you think most exemplifies the youth Ultimate scene and its players.

We’ll pick the top 3-5 ideas and then invite the youth members to pick their favorite.

The winner’s design/slogan will be printed and distributed to strengthen the community and pride of youth Ultimate players nationwide.

Requirements:

Must contain the UPA logo (may be small and off to the side, but it needs fit in somewhere)
The word “Ultimate” must appear in the design/slogan.
Can be square, rectangular, oval or circular.
Up to 3 colors.
Focus on the Youth division
Designs due to youth@upa.org by October 1st. (Feel free to send them in sooner!)

First Practice Correction

Practice on Thursday is at 4:30 p.m. at Burnes Park. Your best bet is to get there a little early and get your cleats on and warm up so you're good and ready by 5:00 when the coaches get there. See you all tomorrow.
