MLK Indoor - Varsity Tournament - 1/19, 1/20

Here is the signup genius for the MLK Indoor:

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080C4AA4AA29A64-mlkindoor1

Please note that this is a Sunday/Monday tournament, driving to Duluth, staying overnight etc.
If we don't get enough parent drivers/chaperones, we won't go.

This tournament is on a sport court, indoor track facility.  Tennis shoes, not cleats.

Start times on Sunday depend on which Pool we're in.  More details to come.
http://scores.usaultimate.org/scores/#college-open/tournament/14097

All Hurtems:
Please start watching the blog regularly.  Practice starts 1/5, in the mean time, a few reminders:
- Workouts are open to all HUrtems/HERtettes, and are highly recommended for players who are hoping to work their way onto the Varsity roster in the next few months.
- There are more fundraisers coming, dates should be available by the Spring registration meeting.

Coming soon:
U of M indoor (V)
SJU signup (V, JV)
Chicago Invite signup (V, G)
Spring Registration

At Home Winter Workout ideas:
Grip Strength
1) You can do this one while doing other activities: tv, reading, study hall.
2) For this one you need a stick, string, and something heavy(ish).

Grip is a crucial part of being able to throw smooth throws with control and distance (very helpful in wind).  It's also necessary for catching one handed.  If you do these exercises, aim for every other day.  These muscles tire easily and need longer to recuperate.  Have fun!

Alternatively, you could put on your snow pants and throw out there in the snow.  It's a pretty good time to practice bidding, especially if the snow is deep.  You'll also have to work harder to pivot and step out.  As always, do all things with purpose or it doesn't count.

Hope everyone had great holidays.  We'll see you soon.
Erin

Details you want to know ( read the whole post!)

1).  BLITZ CARDS:  if you earned extra blitz cards to sell ( and keep the $$ for yourself ) you should contact Stephen Elias. If you have cards you've sold and money to turn in here is your last opportunity. Stephen will be at Starbucks on hwy 55/ winnetka tonight from 7-8 PM. 51 kids have cards to collect !! (763) 439-5000

2). You recently received an email re: rostering

Returning players should have received an email from hgfern@aol.com. Subject: New Player Confirmation Request.
Please read and follow the instructions to confirm you are playing with HURT.
New players - you (or your parent) will receive an email in the coming weeks - probably from USAU.  Same deal - read and follow instructions.

The term "practice roster" is the place in the USAU system that all HURT players are listed.  Event and tournament rosters are pulled from the practice roster.

Please follow the instructions and confirm ASAP
Thank you!
(If you've forgotten your password go through the reset your password prompts :-)

3).  Tzedakah Bowl @ the metrodome:
We are not sending a team as a club. But if you're interested in playing I believe there is still the opportunity to register. I have heard that many kids who are free that day have registered and are excited to play. Follow the instructions from the blog post about this event.

4).  Varsity players: We have been invited to play in the MLK day tourney in Duluth.   January 19-20!
More info to come.

5).  Indoor winter practice will begin ( for ALL teams)  Sunday evening January 5th.  Check the blog during winter break for time/ location.

BLITZ FUNDRAISER UPDATE/REMINDERS

Wowza!

Everyone,  players, parents, drivers, Jon Frank, Stephen Elias,  please accept my CONGRATULATIONS on an amazing and very successful fundraising event for Hopkins Ultimate!
We 'Blitzed' a significant number of neighborhoods.  The weather was not ideal, but with the generosity of parent drivers warming kids up with breaks and hot cocoa, and players being toasty warm, everyone 'worked' their map areas to the end!

Cards are still available to sell through the end of December.  It's not too late to sell to neighbors, friends and family you might not have connected with before.  If you are done, no problem.  Stephen Elias will be at the Starbucks, Golden Valley Commons on hwy 55, Tuesday  Dec. 10th from 7-8pm.
Bring any unsold cards, pickup your 5 free cards if you earned them, and any money you might need to turn in.  Stephen has been keeping records so if you are unsure of your status, stop by and chat with him.

Kudos go to the:  top blitz day sellers, top cars, top parent drivers and the iPad mini winner. ( I had nothing to do with it! He wasn't even in my car!)

Reminders:
*Workouts have begun for varsity and girls.
*Winter practices will begin in January.  All teams practice on Sunday evenings at either NJH/WJH structures.
*Team specific practices will be posted around the first of the year.
*Although subject to change, Tuesday/Thursdays are our practice days for winter.
*Tournaments and dates will also be posted when they are confirmed.
(Rule of thumb: approximately not  accurately;  tourneys are very close to  the same weekend as the previous year)
*keep checking the blog for updated info as it becomes available.

Have a happy Holiday season!

Debbi

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 24th = BLITZ FUNDRAISER

2nd SUPER SUNDAY BLITZ

I am so impressed and proud of EVERYONE that participated in last Sundays blitz !

Players! Parents! Drivers! Organizers! Helpers!  And of course our customers!

We, ( everyone ) as a family,  should be proud of the amazing, positive, bonding, cooperative, and
LUCRATIVE, for Hopkins Ultimate Frisbee, experience of last Sundays blitz.

I want to share with you some of the feedback I received before and after Sundays event:

Before :
~ 7 hours!  Are you kidding?
~ these things never work like they're supposed to
~ it's a lot to ask of both players and parents
~ is there an 'opt out' choice?
~ I'm not happy about it but I'll do it, if I have to
~ I have 2 hours. That's it
~ the kids are going to get cold
~ really? After dark too?
~I'm reluctantly helping to support you and the club
~the pizza party thing took too long.  I wanted to leave...my kid wanted to stay
~I didn't anticipate buying hot chocolate and fueling the kids with food.  But hey(!),
What's a couple bucks out of my pocket for the type of success we had?
AFTER:
~ although I was initially reluctant... The event turned out to be a positive experience for all
~ok..I'll eat crow, I had fun! the kids had fun! the time went by quickly! I was wrong!
~ the kids in my car had a BLAST   They all gained new self confidence.
~ I thought the day would drag on.... It actually went by super fast
~ the kids bonded as friends and team mates
~HUGE self esteem builder
~ I didn't want to have fun....but I did!
~ I still don't care for this type of fundraiser...but I've got to admit/VERY SUCCESSFUL
~ the kids in my car want to sign up again for next week!
~ how does today's totals compare with the weenie wagon!
***WE RAISED MORE MONEY IN ONE 7 hour day than in 7 months of working
The Cub Foods Weenie Wagon!

David (Digital) Seffren wrote the following for the blog=  Thanks David :-)

HURTems and HURTettes.  What a fantastic day we had on Sunday the 17th.  We made some great money for HURT.  But we are only half way there.  We are going to hit the neighborhoods again this Sunday the 24th.  If we can duplicate our success of Sunday the 17th – the club will be in great shape for our spring season.

ALL the personal incentives are still there.  We will have another $1000 ca$h grab bag, top individual and team sellers will get to pull first and get more pulls.  Accumulated card sales over 50 (presale + 1st blitz + interblitz sales + 2nd blitz) will qualify you for caSh awards (see your envelope); and the top-top-TOP seller (over 50 cards) will take home the iPad Mini !!!!!   Study the video, ask your friends what worked for them, get out there this week and sell-sell-sell to your friends, family and neighbors. AND, PLEASE use the signup to let us know you will be there next Sunday the 24th.
PARENTS !!   We have 15 drivers signed up for the 24th, we are most likely going to need more.  Remember, you get ca$h grabs too.  Please use the signup genius to let us know you will be there.
Blitz day schedule

 November 24th
  • Noon-1 PMRidgedale Library RHR meeting room; pre-blitz meeting

  • 1 PM-6 PM: Blitz selling in defined neighborhoods

  • 6 PM - 7:30 PM: pizza / awards party @ HHS Commons

Way to go Hopkins Ultimate family!  I am so proud of everyone for signing up today!  As Erin would say: Toasty Warm!  Dress appropriately and wear Hopkins Ultimate apparel.  You will be walking through neighborhoods representing HUrt.  Impact fundraising will provide rain ponchos if necessary.

PARENT DRIVERS

PARENTS!  We need your help PLEASE!

Our first Sunday Blitz is this weekend Nov.17th,  12pm-7pm.
The kids have committed their time and we now have 46 players signed up for Sunday !  Thank you:-).  We could really use 5+ additional parent drivers.  The areas the kids will be covering are quite large.  We are sooooo close to having all the pieces in place!  Once all the pieces are in place (40+ kids/parent drivers/2 kids per car) we have a recipe for a FUN, successful and lucrative day!

HUrt players..... Ask your parents to help drive.  Show them the blog and Signupgenius, watch the video with your parent.  Help the adults sign up if they've never done so before.  Remember; Parent drivers can win prizes/cash too!
If this Sunday doesn't work for you.....there's always next Sunday.
Parent participation is crucial (mandatory) for the club to run efficiently and smoothly.
Thank you,

Debbi

P.S.  A big shout out to players and parents already signed up! If you've signed up for both blitz days....double shout out!

Fundraiser video

What you need to know about our ALL teams
Fundraiser:

Our 2 SUPER SUNDAY BLITZ DAYS are coming up!
Participation in at least 1 blitz day is MANDATORY for all players on ALL teams.
The video link explains the fundraiser in detail.  This can/will be very successful but we need everyone's participation.  Including PARENTS!
There are great incentives and prizes!  Cash bag grabs! Pizza party after each blitz! Opportunity to win an iPad mini!  Watch the video to find out more!

Hopkins Ultimate relies on fundraiser revenue to operate.  The dollars raised impact all players.  Some of the places Fundraising funds are used for (but not limited too):
Tournament fees
Scholarships
Extra practice fields (indoor and outdoor)
Field bags
Travel (including parent reimbursement to JV out of town tournament gas)

And much more!

For the past several years the majority of our funds came from the Cub Foods Weenie Wagon.  Initially lucrative, our profit substantially declined with each year due to circumstances beyond our control.  We were committed to every Thursday, 10-6, April through October!  A HUGE time/staffing commitment.
Over the next 2 Sundays there is the potential to make an equal or GREATER dollar amount to past 7 month Weenie Wagon profits!

Sign up on the Signupgenius
Watch the video
Commit to at least 1 Sunday

Fundraiser Details

Hurtems, Hertettes, Parents,

Please make the fundraising events below a priority.

Informational meeting November 6th, 8-9pm @Ridgedale library rm 172
2 blitz days: November 17th & 24th

Attend all 3 for the best chance of winning the grand prize.
Player participation in one of the 2 blitz Sundays is mandatory.
We need 25+ parents and 50+ players each blitz day.

Since the players cannot drive themselves, parent participation as drivers is essential.

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080C4AA4AA29A64-hurt

There are over 90 players registered for ultimate this year, and more coming in the spring.  The better job we do fundraising, the easier and less expensive the spring season will be.

Thanks,
Erin

This week - Varsity Tryouts & Saturday Tournament

Hurtems,

The events this week are specifically for those players still trying out for Varsity.

- Tuesday, Tryout
- Thursday, Practice
- Saturday, One day tournament at St. John's

Maetzold got ripped up last week, so we're working with the city to find a replacement field.  I don't have that information finalized yet, but will post as soon as I do.

The Varsity roster will also be set this week, and that roster will be expected to go with us to the SJU tournament on Saturday.

More details to come.
Thanks,
Erin

SAVE THE DATES: 11/17 & 11/24 Fundraiser

Please mark your calendars for an excellent and rather amazing fundraiser opportunity that we have coming in November.

Participation will be mandatory for all Hurtems/Hertettes, and we will require assistance from half of our parent support network.  Please be prepared to attend at least one of the two days.

The potential gain for the program is $10K.  That’s correct.  Ten. Thousand. Dollars.  Other programs have earned more than that in one day.

Specifics:
- Dates: Sunday 11/17 and Sunday 11/24
Expected time commitment per day = 5 hours, morning start
Efforts are made door to door in district neighborhoods = toasty warm
There are incentives for all player and parent participants
There are additional incentives for players and parents who participate both days
Parents are only responsible for driving
Top seller will win a prize comparable to an iPad mini

As a reminder, fundraisers allow us to reduce costs for the whole family.

A signup genius will be going up soon with finalized details, I just wanted to make everyone aware of the logistics and communicate properly about my expectations regarding participation.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thank you for all you do to support our family.
Erin

All Is Well In Canada, eh?

We arrived last night and the kids traveled beautifully!  They received their room assignments, settled in and were asleep by 11:30.  This morning was beautiful :-). Sunny, crisp and fall colors everywhere.  The hotel breakfast was quite nice, the bus left exactly on time and both teams played well.   The Black team went 3-0 (!)  and Silver went 1-2.  Silvers last game was a nail biter... Universal point 6-6, losing by 1 :-(.
I'm proud of the kids!  Respectful, punctual, playing great ultimate and having a good time.
Be assured they/we are all...well, ... bonding as players, coaches, chaperones....family.  We have wifi in the hotel but electronics are on 'airplane mode/cellular data off'. So if you haven't heard from your child, don't worry!  Lights out in 1/2 hour,  I will update again tomorrow.

Practice cancelled 10/16

Hurtems,

Unfortunately, Maetzold has been closed for the season after the rain/condition of the field yesterday.

We'll be finding alternative fields for varsity tryouts next week.
Sorry for the late notice, the city just let us know.

The sun is supposed to set at 6:26pm today - get out and throw somewhere with grass.

HBTS 2013 - packing & details

Toasty Warm!

Check out a packing list from a few year ago.

A few key points:
- yes, you need your passport
- you also need to have all your paperwork/$ in
- I can't say enough about wool/synthetic socks
- Layers
- we'll be wearing Hurt Pinnies, so please make sure you have one

Regardless of the weather, it is really important that you're ready for anything (rain/snow/wind/sun).

This is a three day tournament.  That means more socks, additional layers etc.
HQ/trainer/food/water refill stations at this tournament are far away from many of the fields we play on, so if you need to regularly re-tape for blisters, or you need sustenance/water, it will be beneficial to plan ahead.

Keep in mind that we're going to fill every seat on the bus, so please pack efficiently.  We'll be trying to keep as much as possible under the bus at all times.  Anything on the bus will need to be able to fit under a seat or in the overhead, and the aisle will need to remain clear at all times.

Hold Back the Snow Info!

HBTS Player Info:

Attention : Our departure time has changed.  Be at the bus ready to load your gear by 12:00 noon.
We will be leaving promptly at 12:30 pm.

The cost for Winnipeg this year will be $285.00 per player. This year's tournament, as you know, is a 3 day event! We've worked hard to keep the price down and the total reflects anticipated profits from the See's candy bar sale. The fundraising dollars from the candy bar sales was used to lower the overall cost of transportation. Cost includes: transportation via a Northfield coach bus complete with wifi and video options. Busing everyone to Winnipeg, back and forth to the tournament each day, and home. Also included in the cost is the hotel, breakfast, field snacks, all tournament fees, and coach expenses. The tournament hosts a BBQ dinner on Saturday night for players and coaches, but we've found in the past that our players often like to order pizzas or some other type of food later in the evening. They are also responsible for their dinner Friday night on the way to Winnipeg, and Sunday night on the way home. The bus will stop at a mall with a food court or a strip mall with a variety of fast food choices (so that's 3 meals that each player is responsible for). They may also want some money for tournament gear (discs, shirts, shorts, etc). We will be bringing typical "ultimate" snacks to the field for each team, but if players have specific foods they like to have at every tournament, they should bring those themselves. There is tournament food available for lunch for players.  PLEASE remember to bring at least 1 refillable water bottle; 2 would be better!

We will be leaving from the back of the Adath Parking lot, directly behind Lindbergh Center, Thursday October 17 at 12:30 pm; this means you need to be there 12:00 pm check in and load your things on the bus.  We typically arrive back to Adath between 12:00-12:45am Monday morning.  When the final tournament schedule is posted, this may change.

We will need a photo copy of everyone's passport, as well as a signed parent permission slip along with your check, no later than Friday October 11th, 2013. (If you have already given us a copy of your passport, thank you!) You can mail it to me, bring it to practice and give to Erin/Finn or Ben Pavelka, or drop it off at my house! But in order to expedite the process of border crossing, all passport information will be sent ahead to border control by Tuesday October 15th...this is a FINAL date. Please get this info in as soon as possible.

Make checks out to HOPKINS ULTIMATE mail them to -
Debbi Pavelka
6840 Harold Ave.
Golden Valley, MN 55427

PARENT INFO - For parent chaperones traveling with us, the cost of riding on the bus will be $70.00. Your hotel accommodations are being held with the team under Hopkins Ultimate. Once the kids have their room assignments and are settling in, you will then switch the reservation to your name and credit card.  Breakfast is included! I will be on the bus as far as Fargo where I will be picking up a car and driving the rest of the way to Winnipeg.  I feel it's important to have a car for incidentals that we might need as well shuttling chaperones to and from the fields. And the all important coffee runs!

Thank you!
Debbi

Practice 10/3 CANCELED

Due to existing field conditions and the promise of yet more rain, practice tonight is canceled.

So stay warm, get caught up on homework, enjoy conferences and stretch.

If it's nice, throw this weekend!
We'll get back to it on Monday.

Thanks also to everyone who came out to the carwash today!

Practice 10/2

Hurtems, Hertets,

I mentioned this at practice yesterday, but practice on Wednesday 10/2 is a HBTS only practice.  I'm having technical difficulties updating the blog Upcoming Events area, so I wanted to be clear.

We'll see everyone back on Thursday.

Thanks

Exit 69 - Sunday

Hurtems,

Same time, same place.  Carpools should go smoother this time. :)

Good ideas: put newspaper in your shoes, stretch again, hydrate

For those you who didn't bring enough layers today, I don't care what the weather says for tomorrow: make an adjustment and be better prepared.  Anything can happen.

- Meet at Lindbergh Center at 7:15 for carpooling.  If you are a Junior or a Senior please prepare to be a driver if you can.  Braden talked about this tonight after practice.
- We will discuss, re-post the plan for Sunday after Saturday play has completed
- toasty warm!  It looks like it's supposed to rain a bit on Saturday please be prepared for anything and remember that if it is wet and windy, it is usually also cold.
- bring more socks than you can believe are possible, and a big trash bag to put all your belongings in.
- Please bring a black/blue and a white.

Feel free to refer to any of our Kits posts for reference: http://hurtult.blogspot.com/search/label/KITS

Spectators!
- Mr. Krelitz's Food Truck, Uncle Frankie's Food, will be on site.  Our Family will receive a portion of the proceeds along with our tournament hosts, St. Olaf Ultimate.  There will be 30 open teams and 16 women's teams in attendance.
- There will be Breakmark Merch
- Remember that we're going to Maple Plain!  This is the first time this tournament has been in Maple Plain, so please don't go anywhere else.
- I recommend spectators bring a chair, an umbrella, a rain coat (if it's windy, umbrellas don't work), a hat, gloves, a reusable water bottle and extra layers just in case.  It might be a good idea to have some towels in the car (in case Hurtems have to sit in cars during a lightning delay).  Shoes make a difference as well - something water proof and comfy, our field is a substantial distance from HQ.

The Coach Photo Scavenger Hunt will start this weekend as well.  Be ready!

HOLD BACK THE SNOW (HBTS) 2013

Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba
October 18-19-20, 2013
Travel Day: Thursday October 17

The 20th Annual Hold Back the Snow Tournament, hosted by SJR Ultimate will be held in Winnipeg, MB on October 18-19-20, 2013. Important to note: this is MEA  weekend.
This tournament has been expanded to 3 days, for the first time.  To  celebrate the 20th anniversary of HBTS.
We will be leaving on Thursday October 17th around noon, traveling to Winnipeg in a coach bus, returning very late Sunday night.

YOU MUST HAVE A valid PASSPORT to go on this trip.
BEFORE you sign up you must be 100% certain you have:
All necessary paperwork completed and turned in (returning players paperwork is current), your parents permission, and a valid passport.

A total of 36 players can compete. This tournament is open to 24 HURTems (players in 10th-11th-12th), 12 HERTettes (no grade restriction) and other players by invitation.  There is a secondary signup for players to use if the 24 guy or 12 girl slots are filled, or you are interested, but not 100% sure you can go.
FYI...... Previous years cost was approx $200 per player for a 2 day tournament.  On the signup there is a place for parents to sign up too!  We require a minimum, of 4 parent chaperones to attend/ participate, in HBTS.
This is a fun and popular tournament! Sign ups fill quickly! Have a passport?✅ paperwork? ✅ permission? ✅. Go ahead and get on the list!

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F044BAEAB2BA13-hold1
Deadline: September 26

Debbi

Erin's note: Signing up does not guarantee you a roster spot (because inevitably more people will sign up than we have spots for).  In order to determine the actual roster, factors will be taken into consideration including but not limited to: participation in fundraisers; attendance at practice; seniority; ability to represent Hurt in Canada; availability of parent chaperones etc.  Since practice hasn't even started yet, these criteria are subject to change.

CAR WASH FUNDRAISER

Remember the car wash fundraiser we had to cancel because of SNOW!?!
We have another opportunity to try again.  And this time the forecast is SUNNY and HOT!  This is a fantastic, fun way to fundraise for HUrt. But before we lock in the date, we need a solid commitment from players and a few parents.   Ideally we would like to have 10 players and 1-2 parents per shift.

When we hit the magic numbers we will lock in the date.
We have a Signupgenius for kids and parents to sign up and  better organize our supplies.
           http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080C4AA4AA29A64-carwashmay
To keep our expenses to a minimum, supplies such as:  buckets, sponges, towels, chamois, brushes, hoses etc...will need to come from YOU, the player.
The location is Cub Foods at HWY 7 and HWY 101
FRIDAY, AUGUST 30th.

YCC volunteers needed!

The Youth Club Championship tournament, a national tournament for high school ultimate players, is coming to Minnesota in three weeks, and we still need more volunteers to make this a successful event. It is being held on August 10th - 11th  2013 at the National Sports Center in Blaine. If you have some free time and any interest in supporting high school ultimate at this level (and helping to keep this event coming to our community), please go to http://mnyu.org/volunteer.aspxto sign up for the times you can help.

Primarily we need scorekeepers, but there are other opportunities listed on the registration page.

There are many Hopkins players on YCC teams this year, so come check out your fellow Hurtems take on the best youth talent in the world (seriously!)!

Oh, and I'll be there too coaching the YCC Mixed team.

Hope your summer is going well - remember that the summer is when you get better and watching high level ultimate is one of the best ways to do so.
Thanks,
Erin
