The Work Ethic of Wisconsin Ultimate

Just want to show you guys how an Ultimate team wins 3 National Championships in 5 years:

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

The Work Ethic of Wisconsin Ultimate…

…is at an all time high. And this statement currently extends to all facets of the program.

Whatever you believe about the cycles of rest and recovery – Wisconsin has decimated through disregard.
In Madison, the only caliber for a successful workout is threshold of physical pain and how well one can push through that discomfort.
Last night was the fourth straight day of complete cardio and leg strength failure. Hitting the snooze button and falling out of bed was never so much fun.
Besides for the intrinsic fitness benefits (and setbacks) – the goal is to mentally “win” the workout.
Not to finish, but to win workouts that on average rated a 9/10 by 25 of the hardest dudes you see walking to class.
But the Hodags are not the only squad pushing. Bella Donna’s workout google-doc is getting lengthier by the day. Without fail, each player signs in to account for the work they put into the season, and every day the list grows. Last night for example, I saw the Pimpdags doing a running and agility workout. The Hodags were killing a long set of plyos and tabatas, while Bella Donna was running sprint intervals and lifting weights. Atropa girls were also seen on the track and in the weight room – putting the total number of ultimate players in the Shell at approximately 75 with the 4 teams combined. And that was just last night.
But that’s really the only alternative. Besides for once a week indoor practice for 2 hours, beginning maybe a week or two before the first big tournaments of the season; Wisconsin has no other way to prepare. It speaks volumes to the commitment level each player has individually invested into the season and the program. No other school has 80 college students busting their ass every single day of the week for the mere enjoyment and excitement of chasing a piece of plastic. But that’s the best part; it’s fun, it creates lifelong friendships, and it prepares an individual for future obstacles. Unlike most ultimate teams – Wisconsin has matured into a mentoring program. Your buddy not only runs sprints and lifts with you, but teaches and guides you. He is the second opinion, who has already experienced your struggle. Wisconsin’s success comes from the fact that being a part of the team is so much more than an athletic endeavor. It is an experience, a guiding force which teaches an individual to balance their time, activities, money, and life. It teaches a work ethic, a competitive drive, and the ability to succeed. When you have finished your time with the Hodags – you are a man’s man.
For all the glamor of being able to play ultimate outside year long – Wisconsin fights with discipline and delayed gratification. No one wants to sprint on the track, jump over hurdles, and touch backboards until they want to puke – but Madison player’s consistently do these activities with the final goal in mind.
Three days ago the Spring Season officially began as almost every player had fully returned from winter vacation. The first short 6 minutes of complete suffering was exactly to the point. But it was the post-running talk that seized my attention. Captain Matt Young began to speak of his goals for the team and his expectations from his teammates. He cemented the first building blocks of something great and took strides to imprinting the importance of this season on the 27 eager faces around him. Matt Young also spoke of his personal sacrifice to the team. As a medical student – Matt must complete several month long rotations as part of his school, which means Crumb is driving many hours on the road just to make it to Hodag functions. Soon I realized that Matt was not talking of sacrifices, but of opportunities. “Every day I drive to practice, I have to pass Breese Steven’s Stadium. That is four times a day I pass it, and every time I get so jacked up thinking that this is the location of National Finals.” In the loud and crowded Shell, I still felt the shiver of excitement roll through the tightly packed group of eager young men. I’m two years removed and even my heart quickened at that thought.
Then Jon Masler took front and center, making his first introduction to the 2010 team. Having been in Israel for the last 5 months, Jon had been waiting and stewing in the thoughts of his 5th year. With enthusiasm to spare, Masler stated his heart-felt commitment to the team and proved it with a quick flash of his freshly marked Hodag tattoo. The group hooted in approval as the first indoor Hodag Love roared and echoed throughout the Shell.
Wisconsin will have legs to spare this season and will most likely push another team's top player into total failure. Late in a hot tournament, he will bend over and put heat exhaustion in a big pile on the field. And the reason will be none other than the tenacity of the Hodags. Wisconsin will sprint you into the ground this season by throwing the fastest, most gritty, eager blanket defenders on you again and again.

All Team Practice - Friday Night

Notice the schedule for this weekend - All Team Practice on Friday night from 9-10:30 PM.

It's not a school night, but it is our last chance this year to get on the indoor turf at the Plymouth Dome! See you all there!

New Cleats?

If anyone is interested in getting new cleats for the upcoming spring season, Eastbay has a couple good deals going on right now: Free Shipping on orders over $75 and $15 off any order of $99 or more. I would highly suggest getting football cleats over soccer because there is usually more cleats at the bottom of the shoe to help you cut better.

Here's the link: http://www.eastbay.com/

Know that there are plenty of great Nike Cleat options there and remember that we are Hopkins. Stay Wet.

"Youth Ultimate"

Recently "Youthultimate.com" (which is a supporter of the Hopkins Hustle), redesigned their site and you should check it out. It's a great place to get tuned in about youth ultimate from all around the country and to learn about what other teams are up to.
P.S there is a link on the right side of the page for it.

Nationals -Western and Chicago upcoming

The Varsity Boys and Girls teams will be traveling to Western Nationals (May 7-9/Seattle) and Chicago Invite (March 19-21) this year. We have commitments from a core of players and parents.

We will not be sending a HURT team to Atlanta so you need not send a deposit for that trip.

We are still eager to add more players especially for Western Nationals because it will make the teams stronger and the trip more fun. So even if you said no before, you can still send a $100 deposit and we will reserve a plane ticket for you.

Parents and players, you can mail your $100 deposit check made out to Hopkins Ultimate for Nationals anytime before Feb. 1 to 2317 Archers Lane, Minnetonka, MN 55305 or give your check with player name in the memo to Emma Peaslee at practice or at school.

MLK Tourney in Duluth Information

Hey Guys -

Below is the information about our tourney in Duluth this weekend. As our captain's meeting is at 3:30 PM on Sunday, let's meet at 11:45 AM at Lindbergh and we'll stop for lunch on the way (most likely Tobie's).

The total cost per player is still being calculated with hotels and everything. This information will be updated here as soon as it is finalized. Players will need to bring a check made out to "Hopkins Ultimate" to Lindbergh on Sunday before we leave. Our per player cost last year was $80.

Gas costs will be split amongst each car, so please bring some cash for that. Also bring some money for lunch Sunday afternoon, dinner on Sunday night and lunch/snacks for the way home Monday.

Depending on how we finish on Sunday, we'l either be playing early Monday morning or Monday afternoon. The blog and our new Twitter (@hopkinsultimate) will be updated with results.

Things you should bring:
WHITE (not gray) SHIRT.
BLACK (not gray) SHIRT.
A disc WITH YOUR NAME ON IT.
Athletic shorts and socks .
Indoor shoes (tennis, cross trainers, basketball, etc.) - this is a hard surface.
Anything else you'd need for playing ultimate.
Some snacks for during the games if you want. There should be some food and water provided, but don't count on a great spread.

Questions? Call me or one of your captains.

Duluth Update - It's a Go!

Hey Varsity Boys -

Our trip to Duluth is a go!

Here is the list of players who are attending:

1 Ethan
2 Joshy K
3 Eli
4 Bonesaw
5 Carl
6 Gollin
7 Y Mek
8 Sussman
9 Evan Fish
10 Cousins
11 Special Alumni Guest Grewe

Last year this tourney cost $80 per player, assume around that for this year too. John Dailey is working hard to line up our accomodations, and that information will be passed along as soon as possible.

Regarding gameplay, I don't know the exact schedule yet, but that will be posted as soon as I know. Regardless, we are going to drive up on Sunday 1/17 from Lindbergh to the fieldhouse, play Sunday afternoon and evening, then stay the night at a hotel in town. Play will continue Monday morning (MLK Day) and wrap up around 3:30 PM at the latest. Kids should be back to Lindbergh by around 6 or 7 PM on Monday evening, if not earlier.

This is an indoor tournament, played on a hard surface similar to our North Jr High fieldhouse. It is 5 on 5. Bring gym shoes as well as a WHITE (not gray) shirt, a BLACK shirt, and some changes of socks, etc. Our hotel should have a pool, so if you are inclined for that feel free to bring a swim suit.

If you are on this list and your status has changed, please call me ASAP to let me know.

Thanks to Judy Saltzman for lining up this gig. And hats off to Emma and Haley who worked hard Friday to organize the shifts and recruit players to fill the day.

Boys Workouts

Every MONDAY and WEDNESDAY, there will be workouts after school at 3 in the Lindbergh Center. Everyone is welcome to and should come get faster and stronger but it is mandatory for Varsity.

Hopkins Varsity Ultimate

Hopkins Varsity Boys,

We are starting to get into the full swing of the winter season and the number of people at practices and workouts is bad. Being on Varsity is a big responsibility and it means that you can't just miss practice because you feel like it. So for now on, I will be keeping track of attendance. If you miss practice and you don't notify a captain or if it's a bad excuse, you will be running a certain amount of killers at the start of practice. I know a lot of you have other sports, so this is not focused towards you guys. Get it together boys.

Here's a quick update on the next week ahead:

The Girls and Varsity teams have a practice on Sunday 12/6 from 8-10 AM at the Plymouth dome. We only have half a field on this day, so we don't have enough room for all three teams this time. There will be more space available throughout the winter and everyone *should* get some time to use this facility.

The JV team has practice on Tuesday 12/8 from 5:15-7 PM at Williston Center. We don't officially get the court until 5:30, but be there early so you have some time to change your shoes, etc. Please bring indoor shoes as this is a synthetic basketball court floor. Bring a WHITE shirt, a DARK shirt, YOUR OWN WATER, and a disc as well.

The Girls and Varsity teams have been invited to St. Olaf in Northfield, MN, on Saturday 12/12 for an indoor scrimmage. The Girls are going from 10 AM - 12 PM, and the Boys Varsity from 12-2 PM.
  • Girls, please meet at Lindberg at 8:15 AM to carpool.
  • Boys, please meet at Lindbergh at 10:15 AM to carpool.
All players who are attending this scrimmage need to bring the signed waiver found here. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian must sign this as well.

Both of these trips, though indoor, are weather permitting (i.e., we're not driving through a blizzard). Thanks to Hurt Alum Andrew 'RZR' Kelley for inviting us!

Again, in this flu season, sharing water is IRRESPONSIBLE. Do not share water and get your teammates sick! Bring your own bottle or use the water fountain at Williston.

Welcome to the Hurt Family, Evie!

Evelyn Rae Vetter Raisanen was born into the Hopkins Hurt family on Saturday, November 21, 2009. "Evie" is the first daughter of our former coach, Jake, and his wife Christina. Both Mom and Baby are healthy, though as you can see above, Dad is tired already!

Congrats Jake and Christina!!!

Varsity Practice - Tues 12/1 - Williston

Hello Kiddos -

I hope you all ate too much turkey and other things over the weekend, and got to spend some quality time with those close to you!

Hurt is back to work, tomorrow night (Tuesday 12/1), the Varsity Boys' team has practice from 5:15-7 PM at the Williston Center. You can find out where the Williston Center is by checking the Hopkins Ultimate map.

We get the courts at 5:30, but please be there at 5:15 so you have some time to get your shoes on, warm up on the sidelines (NOT ON THE COURT), etc.

For those who have never been, the Williston space is a hardwood gym floor. Please wear appropriate footwear, but don't wear the same shoes on the court that you wore outside if you can help it. Continue to bring everything else needed for a practice, including a WHITE shirt, a DARK shirt, a DISC, and YOUR OWN WATER.

IN THIS FLU SEASON, SHARING/STEALING FROM YOUR TEAMMATES' WATER BOTTLE(s) IS UNACCEPTABLE AND IRRESPONSIBLE. Don't get your brothers sick, bring your own water!

Please call me if you are unable to make it or if you have any questions.

Workout with Colin "Tater" Camp

Hurt’ems:

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Colin Camp. I was on the team the last three years and I am now a freshman at Madison.

I’ll be home this weekend for break and since I plan on working out, I’d like to extend an invitation to any of you (jv, girls, varsity) to come join me for a college-level type workout. It will be good opportunity to learn some of the hard work that it takes to become a great ultimate player and a national level team.

If you’re interested I’ll be at Lindbergh Center on Wednesday at 3 pm and would love to meet some new faces and see some I already know.

If you plan on attending or are even considering it, write in the comments so I have an idea of the number of people who will be there.

Happy Holidays,

Colin Camp

p.s. Hope to see some alumni there as well!

Down Time

Hey Hurtems -

As you may have noticed, things have slowed down (officially) over the past week as we transition from outdoor space to our indoor season and approach the holidays. Official practice time and space is coming shortly, but now is a great time to work on your own and improve yourself individually.

Get in the gym, continue (or start) working out on your quickness and strength. Or don't get in the gym - get outside to your backyard or a park and throw by yourself or with a friend!

If you are confused or uncertain about what you can do to make yourself better, talk to your captains and coaches.

This is the time to get better, it will pay off in the spring!!

Captain Josh Klane
Captain Eli Leonard
Captain Ethan Rasmussen
Onstar Aanestad
Nihal Bhakta
Boomstad Bumsted
Greg Cousins
Bonesaw Hoffman
Jason Finkelstein
Evan Fisher
Danny Gollin
TK
Y Mekler
Z Mekler
Daniel Raskin
Mike Rumble
Schlomo Segal

Congrats to all that have been selected. As we talked about on Wednesday night, this roster is fluid in both directions. If you are not named above but work your butt off through the winter and show us that you belong, there are opportunities to move up.

What happens next...

A few things you should keep in mind as we wait for snow and indoor gym space:

1. Please continue to check the blog. This is especially important for fundraising opportunities and team workouts.
2. There is no reason why your winter workouts can't start today. If you want to know what you can do to get better before spring practices start, talk to a captain or a coach.
3. If you're injured, please take the time to heal completely.
4. Hang out with your teammates. Get to know them and understand their timing etc. This non-ultimate time will translate to on the field communication and teamwork. Promise.

Coming soon to the blog: important winter fundraising plans.

Thank you,
Coaches

Varsity Practice Sunday Night - Be There!!!

Hi Varsity Team -

On Sunday night, we have been invited by the U of M Grey Duck team to come and practice with them. Location is classified (it's on the Minneapolis campus), but let me just say that "Ultimate is back on Campus!"

Here's what you need to know...

Practice goes from 7:30-10 PM. We will be meeting at Lindbergh at 6:45 PM Sunday night, and will be back at Lindbergh by 10:30 PM. Those who can drive, please plan on driving. Bring some change for parking meters, as we will be parking on the streets. If I remember correctly, the meters only accept quarters.

Bring a white (not gray) shirt, a dark (not gray) shirt, your OWN water bottle, cleats, and dress for the weather.

This is an opportunity not to be missed, so plan your weekend accordingly (homework, etc.) so that you can make this practice. There are six distinguished Hurt alums on this team (Michael Arenson, Peter Schmitt, Greg Arenson, Mike Tradewell, Tom Rosengren, Simon Gottlieb), so it will be a great chance to see some familiar faces and learn from a team that qualified for the 2009 UPA College National Championships!

Please leave a comment if you are available to go, and if so, if you can drive.

Thanks,
Mikey K

We only have 1 or 2 more outdoor practices for the fall! It would be really nice to have enough girls to scrimmage because we'll be splitting off from the boys for our own practices. If you can't make it PLEASE let one of the captains or coaches know as soon as you know you won't be able to come. As soon as the schedule is up, feel free to post if you are coming or not here.

Please either fill in your availability in the Google doc or post. Your responses determine when we'll be having practice this week.

HBTS recap

Congratulations to both Hopkins teams who attended Hold Back the Snow!!

Hopkins Black stressed everyone out with 3 consecutive wins on universe point on Sunday to take the Championship. It's about the memories and the snuggy.

Hopkins Silver broke seed, finishing 11th of 21 teams. From what I saw, there were some highlight reel plays and steady improvement over the course of the weekend. Great work!

Rest up, stretch, and rehydrate. We'll see you at practice.
Erin

PS. If anyone found an Ipod touch on the bus, please contact Benji.

Winnipeg is cold!

Scratch the 50 degrees -- not even close. It was windy too. Kids held up well and played well too.

Black team went 4-0. Silver finished the day 2-2.

Finished dinner at the barbeque and will relax by the pool or in the hotel rooms for the remainder of the evening.

Arrived safe in Winnipeg

All 36 players arrived in Winnipeg without incident although we nearly had to call Coach Lou's parents for permission to take him to Canada. Our border crossing was record fast.

Both teams will have breakfast and head to the park for four games and a barbeque today. Temp may get as high as 50 degrees.

Here is the web site of the event so you can see the schedule etc.

Winnipeg travel info

For those heading to Winnipeg, it's time to pack those bags.

But first, thanks to the 10 parents who are chaperoning the trip: Diane Arenson, Sheri Brenden, Steve Bumsted, John Dailey, Jennifer Kreiman, Jon Kachelmacher (driving),Ken Raskin, Wendi and Rick Rosenstein, and Judy Saltzman. We couldn't do the trip without their support. The players will be in good hands.

Trip info: Travel arrangement details and permission forms are available here.

Parking: Adath Jeshurun Synagogue will allow cars to be parked in the southeast corner (farthest away from the building) of the parking lot If you choose to leave your car there over the weekend, Adath is not responsible for any damage or theft that happens to your car. You park your car there at your own risk.

Bus boarding and loading: Fri., 11:45 a.m.-12:30 at Adath Jeshurun lot. Passports and birth certificates must be in-hand in order to board the bus.

The following is a packing list from "H" -- a HErt coach who went to Winnipeg last year.

  • Cleats (and a back-up pair if you have them)
  • Hopkins light jersey and black jersey (for new players, any black or white shirt is fine, non-cotton, synthetic material is best)
  • Shorts
Appropriate clothing for weather:

  • Rain jacket and warm jacket and/or vest, something that will stop the wind
  • Long underwear/performance layer for top and bottom (bring layers, no cotton)
  • Hats: stocking for warmth and one to block sun
  • Mittens or gloves
  • Socks, bring extra – wool and/or synthetic, or anything but cotton is best! Cotton socks slip when wet, and create friction, which can give you blisters. They don't dry, hence leaving you with cold, uncomfortable feet. They will be more expensive but are worth the investment. Any sports/outdoors store should have these.
  • Disc, if you have one (with your name on the back)
  • UPA Rules Book (coaches will bring some for new players to read)
  • Reusable water bottle(s)! Hopkins urges all players to have reusable bottles at practices and tournaments. Please be responsible citizens!
  • Appropriate foodstuffs for fuel (think carbs and protein - some snacks provided, but best to provide your own)
  • Extra shoelaces!!!
  • 1st aid items (personal inhaler, moleskin for blisters, pre-wrap if you use it often, Icyhot) Sunblock! You have a greater chance of burning on cloudy days.
  • Cash to buy merchandise and food ($50-60 recommended for meals)

Girlies for Exit 69

Girls,

We are all very excited for this weekend and I am excited to play with all us girls, but we must get some things cleared up so we have no problems or confusion the day of. First, we are expecting all of you to meet at Lindbergh at 9:00 on saturday and 7:00 sunday. So, if you are driving up separately or at a later time please post on the blog and keep your phones on so we can contact you!
Second, we need female drivers and or parents. Our games may end at a different time than the boys so it would be convenient if we all drove up and back together. If you can drive please post that on the blog too. For all you non drivers, you need to bring 3 dollars each day for gas money for whomever is driving you.
Third, bring 20 dollars for the tournament fee.
Lastly, these are the people that we are expecting to come to the tournament and meet us at Lindbergh if you have any changes ( want to come, aren't meeting us at lindbergh, can't come, etc.) please post them.

[[UPDATE]] Boys, this is a varsity level tournament and we will be bringing a limited number of players. We'll choose the roster based on seniority and experience. If you are interested in attending this tournament, please post in the comment section or talk to your captains at school. We'll post a final roster later this week. Girls have been commenting in another post about their availability.

Things to bring to this tournament:
- a WHITE (not gray) shirt
- a BLACK (or dark) shirt
- athletic shorts and socks
- cleats
- a disc, if you have one
- a water bottle (or two)
- sunblock and a hat
- rain and cold gear (who knows what the weather will be like?)

Northfield is less than an hour away, right off Exit 69 (hence the tourney name!) on I-35 south of the Cities. Upperclassmen, please post in the comments if you are able to drive. Also, parents, if you plan to attend the whole day and would be willing to drive some players, please also post in the comments. Gas costs will be the individual responsibility of each car and split amongst those in the car.

The per player cost for this tournament (covering the tourney entry fee and coaching stipends/costs) is $20 per player. Please bring this to practice on Thursday, or with you on Saturday morning. Checks can be made out to "Hopkins Ultimate." Please pay before we leave on Saturday or you will not be able to attend. Questions or concerns please contact Sheri at slbrenden@comcast.net. Some food and water will be provided by the tournament, but please bring some snacks of your own or money to buy food if you so choose.

The captains' meeting is at 8:15 at the following location in Northfield:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=510+East+Jefferson+Parkway,Northfield,MN+55057&ie=UTF8&ll=44.441992,-93.164116&spn=0.003631,0.007027&t=h&z=17&iwloc=A

Coaches will meet the players at the captains' meeting in Northfield.

Expect games to start at 9 AM and play to complete around 5 or 6 PM on both days. I have not been given an exact schedule yet, but I will post that as soon as I receive it.

We are NOT staying in Northfield, but will be returning to Lindbergh on Saturday night.

Fellas, please be advised that this tournament is being considered a varsity tryout tournament by the coaches, and we will be playing against college and adult competition.

Questions? Please ask your coaches at practice or give me a call/email.

9/20 FALL LEAGUE GAME

Hey guys,

Our game this week is at 1:45 at Lake Nokomis, be there at 1:15. We're playing South Squall, this is another high school team, so it should be a good match up.

REMEMBER WEAR BLACK AND BRING YOUR WAIVER IF YOU HAVEN'T!

Cold Front Cooldown - Next Saturday 9/26

Hey Team -

Next Saturday we will have two mixed (boys and girls combined) teams competing in the "Cold Front Cooldown." This is a one day tournament, hosted by Eden Prairie Cold Front Ultimate, on Saturday 9/26. As this is a local and one-day tourney, there is no additional per player cost for this tournament. The club has covered the tournament fee.

This tournament is being held at the Twin City Polo Club in Independence, MN, just west of Maple Plain. All players are invited to attend. Players must have their Hurt registrations materials submitted to participate.

As this is the same weekend as the UPA Northwest Plains Sectional qualifier (a tournament for adult Ultimate players), most if not all of the coaches will be playing at this tournament. Fortunately, this tournament also is located at the Twin City Polo Club on Saturday and Sunday. This means that coaches Mikey K, Erin, Lou, and Tom will all be out at the fields, but for the mot part unable to coach. Captains will lead the teams, but we will need parent chaperons to supervise throughout the day. Parents, if you can attend for all or part of the day on Saturday, please post a comment on the blog also.

The following is a map of Hopkins Ultimate sites. Included on there is the location of the polo fields.
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=112976841523924219467.00045e03e59e361d1fd7a&t=h&z=11

There will most likely be fruit, bagels, and water provided by the tournament, but players are encouraged to bring refillable water bottles and snacks for themselves. Players will be responsible for all of their own food in addition to what is provided by the tourney, so please be prepared.

Expect the first game to start around 9 am, and play to go until 4:30 or 5. Players will meet at Lindbergh to carpool if necessary, most likely meeting 1 hr, 45 min to 90 minutes before the first game. Carpooling details will be posted by captains by midweek.

Players, please respond in the comment section if you are able to attend.

Any Interest in Fall League?

Hey guys,

We are playing in a co-ed Fall League this year. It will start Sunday, September 13 at Lake Nokomis, and run through November 12 (and it's always on Sunday). You aren't expected and probably won't be able to play every game. Game times run anywhere from noon to 5pm. Anyone interested should post in the comment section with their FIRST AND LAST NAME AND EMAIL ADDRESS. Varsity and upperclassmen are first priority, but please post regardless of age if you are interested (boys AND girls).
