The art of packing for a flying tournament
Varsity Hurtems traveling to Paideia on Friday:
ATL weather
The timing of laundry might be important. Think ahead!
Packing list:
- street clothes (there is a dress code for the plane, captains will tell you Thursday)
- toiletries Liquids policy
- Photo ID
- your inhaler, epi pen, or any other meds you need
- your kit (BOTH jerseys, HUrt shorts, cleats, tights, reusable water bottle etc.)
- socks
- warm up clothes (it will be brisk and dewy in the AM)
- hat/head ware, sweat bands
- a disc with your name/team written on the back in dark permanent ink
- $$, phone, charger
- old jerseys to trade (or any jerseys you sold that are going to a new home)
- pillow*
- sleeping bag*
- towel
- your best; your focus; your swagger; your happy.
Players will bring one carry on + a personal item. The best use of these items is a duffel (rolling luggage gets awkward and can't do double duty as a field bag) and a backpack.
Pro tips:
- Use space wisely: put socks inside of cleats; roll instead of fold, bring buds instead of beats
- bring ear plugs (some of your brothers snore)
- work together: all 19 of you don't have to bring shampoo!
- separate things that smell; have to stay dry; or go together with ziploc bags.
- if you're planning to buy merch, leave space
- bring an empty cleat bag to keep things in at the host family's house
- you know what makes a decent pillow? *your warmup clothes + towel bundled together
- sleeping bag substitutes: *blanket, sleeping bag liner
- pack the essentials first. If you have space left over, you've earned whatever else you can fit.
- peanut butter and nutella are considered liquids and will be confiscated (SIGH)
The team is bringing the standard food bag, sunscreen and bug spray. Erin will have HUrt tats and eye black. Here's another example packing list for a flying tournament for reference.
Parent notes:
- comfy footwear
- sunglasses/hat
- water bottle
- there are fire ants!
- this is one of the only tournaments with raised vantage points... if anyone wants to video...
- camera
- loud voices
- something to do if there's a bye round
- layers
- something to sit on if the bleachers are wet
If you didn't find what you were looking for in this really long post, please ask someone who went to Paideia last year or find Erin at the Varsity game Thursday night.

CHICAGO TRAVEL #3 (final)
CHICAGO TRAVEL FINAL POST
Good morning Chicago travelers! I've consulted with a driver out on the roads this morning and we've decided to give MNDOT a little extra time to plow the roads. The first part of the trip will likely be slower than normal travel times. But it looks like the 2nd half of the trip should have better road conditions.
Our new and final departure time is 12:noon!
Please be at the back parking lot of Adath Synagogue no later than 11:45am.
Carpools:
Lieberman car:
Michael
Will
Johnny
Coach
Molnar car:
Matt
Shaps
Isiah
Spencer car:
Braden
TyLo
Pavelka car:
Ben
Kaminsky
Drew
Boney
Coach
I suggest everyone eat lunch/brunch whatever before we depart. We will stop for another meal further into the trip.
I appreciate everyone's flexibility.
See you soon!

CHICAGO TRAVEL UPDATE
UPDATE:
We all know there is winter (ugh) weather forecasted for tomorrow and Friday. I am watching the weather closely (!!) however it's still too early to know how it will affect our travel plans. It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway,
The safety of our players, coaches and chaperones/drivers is our #1 priority. Period! Everyone should be prepared to be flexible for Fridays departure time to potentially move earlier or later.
Everyone traveling in the carpools should have winter gear, a filled reuseable water bottle and extra snacks (in addition to your field food) for the drive. I'm anticipating a slower and longer drive to Chicago.
I will update again when we have more details.
Thanks !

Hi all, sorry for the delay in the post. As many of you have probably heard, Hert girls have been invited to scrimmage against some new Macalester players this Saturday (tomorrow) at 2PM.
What: Scrimmage
Where: Macalester College (1600 Grand Avenue, St. Paul MN, 55105, at the Leonard Center
campus map (The Leonard Center is number 11 on this campus map)
When: 2-3:30, though some girls have work and we can certainly end early
Roster: These are the girls who have confirmed to me they are playing: Mickela, Lilly, Carmen, Jordan, Addie, Winnie, Sam, Noa, Abigail, and Katie. Jenna and I will be there to coach (and play if needed)
The girls are planning on meeting at Lindbergh at 1:15 and carpooling over. (I can make myself available to drive as well, just let me know!)
There is parking off of Snelling Avenue just south of the Leonard Center and the main entrance to the building is on the west side. We'll be playing in a fieldhouse, so it's a standing-room-only type of environment for those of you that will be coming to spectate.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns (I will be in class prior to the scrimmage, but I will respond asap), 651-336-4182

Upcoming Varsity Tournaments
Varsity Hurtems & Parents,
We got enough to go to Chicago Invite, and we were officially invited to Paideia Cup.
We'll talk more about this at Registration, but there are some action items:
1) Since the girls aren't going to Chicago, we can't get a bus. We'll need to consider whether we have enough parents to drive, or if we need to rent 15 passenger vans. Parents, if you are willing to drive to Chicago, please contact either Norma Wolk or Sarah Norsted-Cohen (or speak with one of them at Registration). We'll need to figure out logistics.
2) Players, please discuss with your parents and then SIGN UP for Paideia. Since this is a flying tournament and airfare fluctuates, we'd like to make travel decisions by March 1st. That means that we must have 16 boys signed up in the sign up genius by March 1st.
3) Players, please plan ahead. You'll be coming off spring break and going into a back-to-back tournament situation. That means you need to be on top of all your life stuff before & during spring break so you don't suffer for attending these tournaments.
Let's go places.

Upcoming Clinics
Wanna get better at Ultimate? Some stuff is coming up.
Rise Up is an organization that is partnering with MNYU to provide clinics for both players and coaches. Registration for their events is here: https://uttc.launchtrack.com/ - Please note that as our sport continues to grow, parents will eventually be in a position to coach 3rd-8th grade teams (kind of like basketball and other varsity sports). I'm not saying that this is happening anytime soon, but I do want to make sure you know that ANYONE is allowed to attend coaching clinics. You don't have to be a certified anything to go to those. So if you're interested in learning more about ultimate, or how to teach throwing etc., consider attending yourself!
The Carleton Ultimate Summer Program (CUSP) is a week-long residential summer experience for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors held at Carleton College in Northfield, MN. The program focuses on teaching sports psychology, team-building, mental preparedness, and leadership using Ultimate as a vehicle to reinforce these concepts. The Program runs from July 27 to August 2, 2014. Participants will be housed in Carleton residence halls. All meals, activities, and equipment are included in the registration fee. The cost is $675 before April 30, 1014 and $725 after April 30, 2014. Contact Carleton Summer Ultimate
Registration is also open for quite a few summer ultimate camps:

Superbowl Sunday Practice 2/2
Hurtems,
As I do every year, I'm planning on holding practice on Superbowl Sunday. This year, the facilities people have asked us to move up our practice to 5-7pm @WJH.
If a few of you want to figure out how to get the game playing in some capacity in the structure, I would be okay with that.
Just wanted to get the word out since this is an unusual Sunday, and an irregular time for practice.
Thanks!
Erin

JV Carpooling
Sorry parents,
We're not sure who is available to drive tomorrow. With these last minute, a-team-dropped, kind of situations, logistics are...well...imperfect.
JV Junior and Senior Hurtems - please post in the comments if you can drive, and how many people you can take. Example: Erin can drive, me +3.
Everyone else playing JV tomorrow - if your parent can drive, please post in the comments and indicate how many people you can take. Example: Erin's mom can drive, me +3.
I will send along assigned carpools for Lindbergh.
Things to remember:
The Waiver - linked in the sidebar

Warmups - please wear warm clothes, as you may have to park several blocks away
Cleats - this is turf, gentlemen!
A White (not grey) and a Blue/Black (not grey)
A reusable water bottle
$ - Greyduck typically has merchandise

JV IS IN!!!!
We found out tonight that a spot opened up for JV at the U of M tournament this weekend. This is a Saturday only tournament and starts at 11 am. There will be a sign up genius for it up sometime tomorrow. More info to come.
The SIGN UP for this event includes both the Varsity and JV information.
All players need to have a completed WAIVER
Driving Policy:
- Whenever possible, parent driven carpools are preferred
- This tourney will follow our policy for State at NSC: Juniors and Seniors may drive*
- Under no circumstances may JV players ride with a Varsity player.
- There is street parking near the facility, there are also a few pay ramps nearby.
*Technically, Sophomores can drive with permission from their parents, and can take passengers if those passengers also have approval from their parents...but we have 2 days to mobilize and that's a lot of approval to get. If we have enough drivers between parents, seniors, and juniors, then no sophomores should drive.

All Hurtems:
Please start watching the blog regularly. Practice starts 1/5, in the mean time, a few reminders:
- Workouts are open to all HUrtems/HERtettes, and are highly recommended for players who are hoping to work their way onto the Varsity roster in the next few months.
- There are more fundraisers coming, dates should be available by the Spring registration meeting.
Coming soon:
U of M indoor (V)
SJU signup (V, JV)
Chicago Invite signup (V, G)
Spring Registration
At Home Winter Workout ideas:
Grip Strength
1) You can do this one while doing other activities: tv, reading, study hall.
2) For this one you need a stick, string, and something heavy(ish).
Grip is a crucial part of being able to throw smooth throws with control and distance (very helpful in wind). It's also necessary for catching one handed. If you do these exercises, aim for every other day. These muscles tire easily and need longer to recuperate. Have fun!
Alternatively, you could put on your snow pants and throw out there in the snow. It's a pretty good time to practice bidding, especially if the snow is deep. You'll also have to work harder to pivot and step out. As always, do all things with purpose or it doesn't count.
Hope everyone had great holidays. We'll see you soon.

Details you want to know ( read the whole post!)
1). BLITZ CARDS: if you earned extra blitz cards to sell ( and keep the $$ for yourself ) you should contact Stephen Elias. If you have cards you've sold and money to turn in here is your last opportunity. Stephen will be at Starbucks on hwy 55/ winnetka tonight from 7-8 PM. 51 kids have cards to collect !! (763) 439-5000
2). You recently received an email re: rostering
Returning players should have received an email from hgfern@aol.com. Subject: New Player Confirmation Request.
Please read and follow the instructions to confirm you are playing with HURT.
New players - you (or your parent) will receive an email in the coming weeks - probably from USAU. Same deal - read and follow instructions.
The term "practice roster" is the place in the USAU system that all HURT players are listed. Event and tournament rosters are pulled from the practice roster.
Please follow the instructions and confirm ASAP
Thank you!
(If you've forgotten your password go through the reset your password prompts :-)
3). Tzedakah Bowl @ the metrodome:
We are not sending a team as a club. But if you're interested in playing I believe there is still the opportunity to register. I have heard that many kids who are free that day have registered and are excited to play. Follow the instructions from the blog post about this event.

BLITZ FUNDRAISER UPDATE/REMINDERS
Wowza!
Everyone, players, parents, drivers, Jon Frank, Stephen Elias, please accept my CONGRATULATIONS on an amazing and very successful fundraising event for Hopkins Ultimate!
We 'Blitzed' a significant number of neighborhoods. The weather was not ideal, but with the generosity of parent drivers warming kids up with breaks and hot cocoa, and players being toasty warm, everyone 'worked' their map areas to the end!
Cards are still available to sell through the end of December. It's not too late to sell to neighbors, friends and family you might not have connected with before. If you are done, no problem. Stephen Elias will be at the Starbucks, Golden Valley Commons on hwy 55, Tuesday Dec. 10th from 7-8pm.
Bring any unsold cards, pickup your 5 free cards if you earned them, and any money you might need to turn in. Stephen has been keeping records so if you are unsure of your status, stop by and chat with him.
Kudos go to the: top blitz day sellers, top cars, top parent drivers and the iPad mini winner. ( I had nothing to do with it! He wasn't even in my car!)
Reminders:
*Workouts have begun for varsity and girls.
*Winter practices will begin in January. All teams practice on Sunday evenings at either NJH/WJH structures.
*Team specific practices will be posted around the first of the year.
*Although subject to change, Tuesday/Thursdays are our practice days for winter.
*Tournaments and dates will also be posted when they are confirmed.
(Rule of thumb: approximately not accurately; tourneys are very close to the same weekend as the previous year)
*keep checking the blog for updated info as it becomes available.
Have a happy Holiday season!

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 24th = BLITZ FUNDRAISER
2nd SUPER SUNDAY BLITZ
I am so impressed and proud of EVERYONE that participated in last Sundays blitz !
Players! Parents! Drivers! Organizers! Helpers! And of course our customers!
We, ( everyone ) as a family, should be proud of the amazing, positive, bonding, cooperative, and
LUCRATIVE, for Hopkins Ultimate Frisbee, experience of last Sundays blitz.
I want to share with you some of the feedback I received before and after Sundays event:
Before :
~ 7 hours! Are you kidding?
~ these things never work like they're supposed to
~ it's a lot to ask of both players and parents
~ is there an 'opt out' choice?
~ I'm not happy about it but I'll do it, if I have to
~ I have 2 hours. That's it
~ the kids are going to get cold
~ really? After dark too?
~I'm reluctantly helping to support you and the club
~the pizza party thing took too long. I wanted to leave...my kid wanted to stay
~I didn't anticipate buying hot chocolate and fueling the kids with food. But hey(!),
What's a couple bucks out of my pocket for the type of success we had?
AFTER:
~ although I was initially reluctant... The event turned out to be a positive experience for all
~ok..I'll eat crow, I had fun! the kids had fun! the time went by quickly! I was wrong!
~ the kids in my car had a BLAST They all gained new self confidence.
~ I thought the day would drag on.... It actually went by super fast
~ the kids bonded as friends and team mates
~HUGE self esteem builder
~ I didn't want to have fun....but I did!
~ I still don't care for this type of fundraiser...but I've got to admit/VERY SUCCESSFUL
~ the kids in my car want to sign up again for next week!
~ how does today's totals compare with the weenie wagon!
***WE RAISED MORE MONEY IN ONE 7 hour day than in 7 months of working
The Cub Foods Weenie Wagon!
David (Digital) Seffren wrote the following for the blog= Thanks David :-)

HURTems and HURTettes. What a fantastic day we had on Sunday the 17th. We made some great money for HURT. But we are only half way there. We are going to hit the neighborhoods again this Sunday the 24th. If we can duplicate our success of Sunday the 17th – the club will be in great shape for our spring season.
ALL the personal incentives are still there. We will have another $1000 ca$h grab bag, top individual and team sellers will get to pull first and get more pulls. Accumulated card sales over 50 (presale + 1st blitz + interblitz sales + 2nd blitz) will qualify you for caSh awards (see your envelope); and the top-top-TOP seller (over 50 cards) will take home the iPad Mini !!!!! Study the video, ask your friends what worked for them, get out there this week and sell-sell-sell to your friends, family and neighbors. AND, PLEASE use the signup to let us know you will be there next Sunday the 24th.Video link... http://youtu.be/cIFlwDw9Us0Signup Genius link... http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080C4AA4AA29A64-hurtPARENTS !! We have 15 drivers signed up for the 24th, we are most likely going to need more. Remember, you get ca$h grabs too. Please use the signup genius to let us know you will be there.
- Noon-1 PM: Ridgedale Library RHR meeting room; pre-blitz meeting
- 1 PM-6 PM: Blitz selling in defined neighborhoods
- 6 PM - 7:30 PM: pizza / awards party @ HHS Commons

Hurtems/Hurtettes play(or fundraise) in all weather except lightening :-)
Way to go Hopkins Ultimate family! I am so proud of everyone for signing up today! As Erin would say: Toasty Warm! Dress appropriately and wear Hopkins Ultimate apparel. You will be walking through neighborhoods representing HUrt. Impact fundraising will provide rain ponchos if necessary.

PARENT DRIVERS
PARENTS! We need your help PLEASE!
Our first Sunday Blitz is this weekend Nov.17th, 12pm-7pm.
The kids have committed their time and we now have 46 players signed up for Sunday ! Thank you:-). We could really use 5+ additional parent drivers. The areas the kids will be covering are quite large. We are sooooo close to having all the pieces in place! Once all the pieces are in place (40+ kids/parent drivers/2 kids per car) we have a recipe for a FUN, successful and lucrative day!
HUrt players..... Ask your parents to help drive. Show them the blog and Signupgenius, watch the video with your parent. Help the adults sign up if they've never done so before. Remember; Parent drivers can win prizes/cash too!
If this Sunday doesn't work for you.....there's always next Sunday.
Parent participation is crucial (mandatory) for the club to run efficiently and smoothly.
Thank you,
Debbi
P.S. A big shout out to players and parents already signed up! If you've signed up for both blitz days....double shout out!

Fundraiser video
What you need to know about our ALL teams
Fundraiser:
Our 2 SUPER SUNDAY BLITZ DAYS are coming up!
Participation in at least 1 blitz day is MANDATORY for all players on ALL teams.
The video link explains the fundraiser in detail. This can/will be very successful but we need everyone's participation. Including PARENTS!
There are great incentives and prizes! Cash bag grabs! Pizza party after each blitz! Opportunity to win an iPad mini! Watch the video to find out more!
Hopkins Ultimate relies on fundraiser revenue to operate. The dollars raised impact all players. Some of the places Fundraising funds are used for (but not limited too):
Tournament fees
Scholarships
Extra practice fields (indoor and outdoor)
Field bags
Travel (including parent reimbursement to JV out of town tournament gas)
And much more!
For the past several years the majority of our funds came from the Cub Foods Weenie Wagon. Initially lucrative, our profit substantially declined with each year due to circumstances beyond our control. We were committed to every Thursday, 10-6, April through October! A HUGE time/staffing commitment.
Over the next 2 Sundays there is the potential to make an equal or GREATER dollar amount to past 7 month Weenie Wagon profits!

Fundraiser Details
Hurtems, Hertettes, Parents,
Please make the fundraising events below a priority.
Informational meeting November 6th, 8-9pm @Ridgedale library rm 172
2 blitz days: November 17th & 24th
Attend all 3 for the best chance of winning the grand prize.
Player participation in one of the 2 blitz Sundays is mandatory.
We need 25+ parents and 50+ players each blitz day.
Since the players cannot drive themselves, parent participation as drivers is essential.
http://www.signupgenius.com/ go/5080C4AA4AA29A64-hurt
There are over 90 players registered for ultimate this year, and more coming in the spring. The better job we do fundraising, the easier and less expensive the spring season will be.
Thanks,
Erin
