Thursday Practice at Maetzold - 6pm

We understand that there are some players that are still deciding if they want to register. If this applies to you, we need a medical authorization form from you if you want to participate at practice. This is for liability reasons, your safety, and does not fully commit you to HUrt or cost you anything.

See the registration post (linked on the right) to find a copy of this form.

EVERYONE

As it gets colder, please dress for the weather. You should not be shivering at practice, you should be sweating. Long tights and long sleeve synthetic/wool tops are recommended. It is every Hurtem's responsibility to be Toasty Warm.

Swarm Fundraiser

We need to know how many of you are interested in participating in the fundraising opportunity at the Swarm game on January 8th, that Stephen Elias talked about at the registration meeting. This is another opportunity for us to raise a large amount of funds for the team, and it sounds like a fun evening!

We would have to sell 150 tickets with a face value of $42.00. These would cost us $17.00, and we would sell them for 20 or 25 and keep the profit. During the game team members would sell chuck-a-balls, which they use for a competition after the game, for $2.00 each. We would keep all profit from the balls sold. They have two groups selling at each game so there would be competition to try and sell a lot of balls. We are only going to do this if we get enough people to commit ahead of time.

Please contact Stephen or post a comment if you are interested. If we don't have enough people in one week we will not be able to do this.

Friday, September 03, 2010

In response to the recent comments about the fate of the girls team:

1. Our main priority is to have a girls team. So recruiting is not a suggestion, it is necessary. The men's teams should do their part to recruit as well. This is something that affects the whole club (i.e. HBTS, a coed tournament).

2. No decisions have been made about what happens if we don't have enough girls.

3. We have options that would allow all girls who register to play in some capacity - but again it fully depends on how many girls we get. I'll be talking more about this at practices, but you can also call me if you have concerns.

Thanks,
Erin

We hope everyone had a relaxing summer but now it's time to get to work. We're starting the 2009-2010 season with the first captains practice Wednesday August 18th from 1pm-3pm at Lions Park in Golden Valley. We will be throwing around and scrimmaging and everyone who plans on playing Jv, Girls or Boys varsity should show up but it is fine if you can't make it.

We know that not everyone has checked the blog the past couple of months so after reading this post, spread the word to anyone you know who plays or is interested in playing. Can't wait to play some ultimate Saturday, see you there.

Sincerely,

YCC volunteers needed!

The 2010 USA Ultimate Youth Club Championships are in Blaine at the National Sports Center this weekend. The Minnesota High School Ultimate League is serving as the local organizer and they need some volunteer help.

The tournament itself is August 14th & 15th and help is needed then as well as the evening of Friday the 13th. The National Sports Center will be handling water, trash and recycling, so volunteer duties are very light and enjoyable: player food preparation, score-keeping (watching some talented kids play some high quality ultimate), setup and breakdown.

If you can volunteer for the whole weekend, great. One day? Fine. Half a day? OK. Just Friday? We need people then. Please go to the Minnesota High School Ultimate Volunteering
Page and sign up. Besides helping some kids to have a great ultimate experience,
you'll get to see some great ultimate and you'll also get some volunteer
souvenirs. We'll have shirts and discs and refreshments. If you work a
full day, we'll get you lunch, too.

Knollwood Cub Foods Fundraiser

Yesterday was our first day of selling hamburgers, hot dogs and brats at Cub and I have to admit, I had fun! Thank you to Randy Steinman, Benny Greenfield and Zach Mekler for being the first to help me run the stand. We were all amazed at how popular this is; it was hopping all day long. That being said, the stand can be run with 2 people at a time, but is easier and more efficient with 3. Cub supplied us with an employee most of the day yesterday, but that won't always be the case. Please check your calendars and email me to sign up for a shift. Parents and players don't have to be able to work together; a lot of the players will be gone at camp from mid June through July so any parent or alum volunteers during this time will really be appreciated. Although I learned quickly that we should try to have players there as often as possible; within 30 minutes of arriving Benny and Zach had recieved more tips than we'd gotten in 3 1/2 hours!

Shifts are 10:30-2 and 2-5:30 every Thursday through August. You should plan to arrive a few minutes early(@10min for the a.m. shift) and we found that we were done yesterday by 5:40.

For transportation to State, we will follow Varsity's lead at meet at Lindbergh by 7:15.
Players are responsible for their own rides to Blaine. Be there by 8:00.

JV - Hustle Update

Hey JV Players and Parents -

Here's what you need to know about the Hustle this weekend:

Saturday - Our first game will be at 9:00 AM on Saturday morning. We will be playing Mahtomedi B on field 14 (southwestern corner of the polo grounds). Please arrive no later than 8:00 AM and plan on staying at the fields until approximately 5:00 or 5:30. We may or may not be playing a 3:40 crossover, but we will need everyone to stay and help pick up after the crossover games on Saturday.

Potluck - Don't forget about the potluck dinner at West Jr. High at 5:30. JV families are responsible for supplying salads for all 5 out-of-town teams and 3 Hopkins teams. Dishes are due at West Jr. High by 4:30.

Sunday - Please be back by 8:00 AM on Sunday morning for our first game at 9:00. We will play our final game at 12:20 on Sunday regardless of our tournament standing.

It's a great weekend for ultimate. Let's be great hosts to all 34 participating teams!

Sleep Over at Jeanine's Dad's House

Just a reminder that we are all sleeping over at my dad's house Friday night! Come anytime after 5pm. We will probably have dinner at about 630pm. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow, food(see below), and your tournament gear.

I need some help with the food. There are 18 of us if you all come along. I will take care of the main course (pasta) and Erin and I will be getting you Dairy Queen for dessert since we still owe you guys.

So this is what we need. Talk to each other and figure out who's in charge of what:

Seniors
Bread- a couple of baguettes
Snacks/Appetizers- chips and dip, veggies, fruit and/or other snacks

Juniors
Breakfast-Bagels and cream cheese, muffins, cereal, fruit, anything you need for tournament day
Smores stuff? If you want it, we have a fire pit

Sophomores
Drinks- juice, soda, lemonade, whatever you guys want to drink for breakfast and dinner- we will have milk

I'm getting excited!

Hopkins Hustle Potluck - Everyone has a role!

This weekend is the Hopkins Hustle. Many people have been putting together the final details.

The potluck on Saturday is a great community event. The out of town teams hosted by our club's families shower at West Junior High and then dine with our three teams in the cafeteria.

Reminder: Deliver your food donation to the West Jr High cafeteria between 4:30 and 4:45 pm. on Saturday, May 22nd. Please use disposable plates and utensils or clearly mark your dishes and plan to pick them up. If you can stay and help monitor the potluck, contact Laurie Levin at levinlaurie@hotmail.com

Players check with your parents to see if they remember their potluck assignment. It is important so that we can feed all those hungry players -
Girls team - bread and dessert
JV Boys team - Salads
Varsity Boys team - Pasta entrees

Thanks much!

Huge fundraising opportunity

We have just been offered the chance to run the hotdog/brat sales at Cub Foods Knollwood EVERY Thursday this summer, earning $400.00 a week. This means we could start out next fall with four times the amount of money raised this whole season...This is a HUGE chance for us to lower the cost of tournament travel for all three teams, and still allow us to have funds for other needs as well. We need to make a commitment for at least most of the Thursday's from June 3rd-August 26th(they will run it themselves if we can't make one or two). We will need 2-3 people there from 10:30-5:30 which can be divided into 2 or 3 shifts(possibly overlapping). Right now I just need people to let me know what kind of availability they would have so I can kind of plot out what we can do. We need PARENTS too!! Even if your son or daughter can't work with you, grab a friend and take a shift; remember, it will help defer costs when we're writing out those checks for trips next year! Please post as soon as possible and then I will let everyone know once we have a schedule worked out.

Western Nationals Travel details

Meet at Door 6 by Delta ticketing area at 1 p.m., Friday. (Mimi Klane will be there.)

The flight is Delta 2053, scheduled to depart MPLS at 2:40pm

Make SURE to bring a photo ID.

I would encourage all of the boys to travel with only carry on luggage, but if they want to check a bag there is a $25.00 charge for the first bag, $55.00 for the second, each way, unless they have elite status on Delta as a frequent flyer in which case it's free. You are responsible for this additional cost if they do choose to check a bag; please let us know ahead of time if you think you will be doing this; that way we'll know if we need to build extra time into the check in process.

The rule for liquids in carry on luggage is 3-1-1. Each individual item can be no larger than 3.4oz, everything must fit in 1 quart size zip top bag, and each passenger is allowed only one.

Each passenger is allowed one piece of carry on luggage as well as a smaller item such as a brief case, laptop case, purse(doubt we'll have any of those!) etc. A jacket and food/beverages purchased in the airport can also be carried on.

Note: Sara left early for Washington and will meet the players when they arrive. If you have questions regarding the trip, please contact Sheri at slbrenden@comcast.net.

Rule Myths

Hurtems,

Over the past week or so I've seen our players encounter some calls that could have been handled better, both at Mudbath and at league games.

To avoid these situations at Nationals and State, I'm going to assign some reading material for everyone.

UPA Rules blog - Calls & Contests you are welcome to read the whole thing, but the part that's the assignment starts at Rule Myth: "It's the receiver's call"

You can stop reading immediately following the discussion of "check feet" as an imaginary call.
Please keep in mind that knowing the rules is part of your job as a Hurtem.

It's a gorgeous day for ultimate, have fun.

Varsity Schedule and Update for 4/28-29

First off, congrats to the girls' team for a great win vs Cretin last night!

Like the JV team has done, due to field availability concerns, the Varsity team is moving our game on Thursday 4/29 from a home game at Lindbergh to an away game at Robbinsdale Armstrong HS. Meet at Lindbergh at 4:30 to carpool.

Thank you to Armstrong and Coach Mike Berseth for being able to accomodate our field space request in ways that has been difficult from our own school. Right now, they are figuring out which of two (two!!!) guaranteed (guaranteed!!!) field spaces we'll be using; once that is decided I will update this information on the blog.

Tonight, Wednesday, we'll be practicing at Lindbergh at 6 PM. Meet near the climbing structure and we'll be there if the space allotted for us is open. If not we may be scrambling. Such is life as noble warriors. Remember, there is still time before nationals! Be there! Get your brothers to practice!!!

JV practice will be at Lions Park tomorrow from 5:00 to 7:30.

The JV has an upcoming tournament this weekend in St. Cloud. The current roster is as follows:

Saturday and Sunday (8): Locketz, Mosow, Gollin, Herzog, Margolis, Raskin, Ratner, Steinman

Sunday Only (2): Elias, Younger

The JV is looking for additional players and we would to invite players from the other two teams to play with us at the Granite City Classic. While many of the Varsity boys and girls are busy with something called prom this weekend, those of you who are not attending prom should consider joining us in St. Cloud.

If you are interested, please sign up in the comments below. Cost is $15 for one day and $25 for two.

Also, drivers desperately needed.

Boys Varsity at South

Where: Powderhorn Park (14th Ave S and 32nd St)
When: Thursday. carpool meeting time at 4:15, game at 6.
Traffic will be bad, especially on 394 E. Hopefully we can start warming up at 5. I'm sure you have a normal meeting spot etc., ask your captains if you're not sure where to be.
FYI, both Mikey and Lou are out of town tomorrow - so you're stuck with me.
Erin

JV Game vs. Eden Prairie B

Please be at Lindbergh with cleats on by 5:15 in order to warm up for our league game tomorrow vs. Eden Prairie B. We will be playing on either field 9 or field 10. Other sports have the fields reserved until 6pm, so DO NOT INTERFERE with any games / practices going on. In fact, if a game runs long, there is a chance we may not be able to use the fields right at 6pm.

If there is not a suitable place for warm-up, we will have to wait until space opens up. It is unfortunate that we are in this situation, but ANY disruption to other teams will have serious consequences for our club's ability to practice and play at Lindbergh.

See you tomorrow. GAME TIME!

Madison Mudbath- Bring your tennis shoes!

So it looks like it supposed to rain all weekend in Madison. Please bring tennis shoe in case we are not able to use the fields at some point. They will have back up indoor opportunities available.

Also remember that if we are outside that you will need warm and appropriate clothing. 55 degrees and raining can be quite chili. This means bring winter hats, mittens, hand warmers, raincoats, tights, plenty of socks, umbrellas and any layers you have that dry quickly and can keep you warm while wet. NO COTTON!

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Smarsity Smactice

We will be practicing at 6:00 pm on 4-21-10 at Lindbergh field 10. That is the one by the lax bros. I better see you all there
