Chemical Policy Reminder

Hi Everyone -

This seems like an appropriate time to remind everyone about the Hopkins Ultimate Chemical Policy. Questions? Please contact your coaches or any parents on the board. Anyways, here it is:

beverage containing alcohol unless as part of his/her family’s observation of religious
celebrations, or approved and supervised by his/her parents or legal guardians; (2) use or
possess tobacco; or, (3) use or consume, have in possession, buy, sell, or giveaway any
other controlled substance.
It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of a controlled substance
specifically prescribed for the student’s own use by her/his doctor.
Penalty
1. First Violation: After confirmation of the first violation, the student shall lose
eligibility for two (2) consecutive weeks of participation in all Hopkins Ultimate
Frisbee Team events AND the next sanctioned tournament. If the student is a
team captain, he/she will lose captainship immediately. A letter of apology
written by the student needs to be presented to the organization before returning
to play.
2. Second Violation: After confirmation of the second violation, the student shall
lose eligibility for four (4) additional consecutive weeks of participation in all
Hopkins Ultimate Frisbee Team events AND the next two additional sanctioned
tournaments. A letter of apology written by the student needs to be presented to
the organization before returning to play.
3. Third Violation: After confirmation of the third violation, the student shall lose
eligibility for twelve (12) additional consecutive months of participation in all
Hopkins Ultimate Frisbee Team events and any sanctioned tournaments. After a
period of 6 months and no additional violations, the player may present in front of
the executive committee for consideration for his/her reinstatement.

Here is a note from the Orono captain about where on campus our game is going to be played:

The field that we will be playing at is located just off Old Crystal Bay Road, when you take a right of Highway 12, you take your first left. and you should have a set of Tennis Courts on your left, and a school on your right, keep going through the roadway, and the field with the lighting on the left is the field that we will be playing at.

Mudbath Aftermath

It was very disappointing to have the Madison Mudbath canceled beneath us this weekend. We were all quite ready for a big weekend of Ultimate play. I appreciate everyone's flexibility in adjusting and regrouping.

I had a question about refunds and I thought others may have the same question. The $35 paid by each player covered our team registration fees, coaches' travel and host gifts, and I'm afraid we spent all that despite the rain. The Mudbath web site has the following disclaimer::

As with all outdoor sporting events, the MadisonMudBath can be canceled or altered due to weather. The tournament is held on the athletic fields used by all Memorial high school teams during the spring and cannot be permanently damaged. If this occurs we will be unable to provide refunds.
Unfortunately, that means we have no refunds.

Granite City Update

Hello everyone

A reminder to all JV players and Varsity players that would like to come. This weekend is the Granite City tournament. So far we have as confirmed:

Also if you plan on coming please ask your parents if they would be able to drive, as we need to line up transportation as well. The plan would be to leave early from Hopkins on both Sat and Sun morning.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Hey guys,

Way to work this weekend and bring Hopkins its first Paideia cup ever. It truly is a moment to remember.

But, as many of you know, I was pretty sick on Sunday. I went to the doctor and my strep test came back positive. Please be on the look out as we were in confined spaces this weekend.

Hopefully I didn't infect anyone. Let me know if you have any questions.

Congrats once again, this is only the beginning,

A big weekend is approaching -- All three Hopkins teams are playing in the Madison Mudbath. Listed below are the players who have told us they are going to the tournament. If you intend to participate and are not listed, please add your name in a comment as soon as possible. We may have to cap our numbers so the sooner you let us know, the more likely you can be included on the trip.

Cost: $35/player for registration, coach travel expense, host gift and some field food. Check must be made out to Hopkins Ultimate and delivered to your coach or Sheri Brenden (2317 Archers Lane, Minnetonka, MN 55305) no later than Thursday 4/23. Also, bring $20 gas money for your driver and you will need meal money for Friday evening and Sunday . The tournament provides bagels/fruit on the field and a wonderful potluck on Saturday night.

Lodging: Each team will spend two nights with a host family in Madison. And, of course, our players are known as polite and pleasant guests. Host families ask for us! Hold up the reputation!

Departure: Meet at 3 p.m. Friday (4/24) at Adath Jeshurun, 10500 Hillside Lane West . Leave at 3:15. Tournament ends 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Travel: We have a great group of parent drivers available to make the trip. (See blog post below about hotels.) We could still use another parent to drive. If you are willing to transport players and spend the weekend in lovely Madison and haven’t been in touch with either Jennifer Kreiman, Judy Saltzman or Sheri Brenden, send an email to slbrenden@comcast.net.

MADISON MUDBATH LODGING

Parents,

The Madison Mudbath (April 24-26) is the "Ultimate" way to get your feet wet in this tremendous sport. We want to encourage all parents to travel to the tournament and cheer your kids, whether you're a designated driver or not. And since all three of our teams are entered, you'll never be at a loss for a game to watch and cheer at.

Also, we've managed to get a pretty good lodging rate at the Radisson Hotel Madison, less than a mile from the fields. (Download PDF Map at right). We've reserved a block of rooms at a very special rate of $75 per night (plus tax). That includes your choice of King bed or 2 double beds (and Sleep Number bed, at that) and a daily hot buffet breakfast.

You must call the hotel by Wednesday, April 22 to be assured of this special rate! Just call:

Radisson Hotel Madison
608-833-0100
Tell them you're with "Hopkins Ultimate Team"
For more hotel information, please visit http://www.radisson.com/hotels/madison. We hope to see everyone there supporting the Hopkins Ultimate teams. Any questions, please feel free to call me at 612-508-6965 or email me at jdailey@healthmarketer.com.
Thanks,

PAIDEIA WEB SITE

For the most current information on Paideia, following is a link to the Paideia Cup 2009 web site: http://paideiacup.googlepages.com/. The tournament director has also promised to send regular updates during the tournament, which I will then post here.

P.S. Make sure you check out the tourney schedule and, more importantly, the photos posted of the 2007 Paideia Cup. Our team looks SOOOO young...

Boys Varsity Paideia Meet time - 11:30 AM, FRIDAY 4/17 at HUMPHREY Terminal

Please meet in the Humphrey Terminal of MSP at 11:30 AM on Friday. From there John Dailey will have our boarding passes and we'll go through security together and to our gates.

Stuff to bring in your carryon: cleats, jerseys, socks to play in, braces, etc., anything else you may need for the game . This is so that in the unfortunate occurrance of lost luggage, you will still have the bare minimum of stuff needed to play.

Each player has been allotted ONE checked bag included in the total cost of the tourney. Please, if you are planning on checking more than one bag, have $15 per bag ready to pay at the airport check-in counter. We are only gone for a weekend, so there shouldn't be too much stuff you need to bring.

As always, please review the TSA's 3-1-1 policy for carry-on liquids. This is still the case. Where your coaches and parents may be forgiving, "forgetting" about TSA policy means your stuff gets left behind.

Here's a link to review the policy: http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Thanks,
Mikey K

PAIDEIA UPDATE - BILLETING INFO

Howdy y'all (need to get used to Atlanta-speak):

Here is the billeting information for the guys at the Paideia Cup. The family's name is Laseter. Following is a bit of information that Helen Laseter provided in her email introducing her family:

"Our family consists of Scott and me (parents) and two children who are students at Paideia, Henry (age 11) and Charlotte (age 8). We also have Frenchie, who is a friendly german shepherd. As you can see, we don't have a current Paideia high school player. We do, however, have a carpeted basement with a bath, and a separate guest room with two beds and a bath. There are other baths in the house the players may use as well. Our set up seems to have served the North Hills team well for the past two years .

"I hope you will ask us for whatever would make this trip best for your team and not worry about putting us out. We can do meals here or point you in the direction of good restaurants. FYI, in the past the players have had breakfast here (of the egg, cereal, bagel, fruit variety) and done non-Saturday suppers both here and at a sports pub nearby. Whatever works for you! We hope you'll make yourselves at home. And we'll be your best fans, until you play the home team, of course."

Gentlemen, your job will be simple...help the Laseters forget about supporting the Paideia School team. Give them a new HOME team to cheer! They sound like great folks, and by the way, Helen Laseter was a graduate of Blake School (ok, we will forgive her for that).

Parents, following is the Laseter's information for your records:

Helen and Scott Laseter
1294 Briardale Lane, NE
Atlanta 30306
404-370-1313 home

I have created pdf maps and directions for: ATL airport to the Laseter's Home, and from the Laseter's Home to Paideia Cup Tourney and the Holiday Inn (where parents are staying). Interestingly, the Holiday Inn is directly between the Laseter's and the Tourney. Special thanks to tournament director Dave Clauson. The logistics couldn't have worked out better!!!

If you'd like the maps, please email me at jdailey@healthmarketer.com or call me at 612-508-6965.

Thanks,
John

* Please don't show up with your old hockey equipment bag as your carry-on luggage. LOL. "No carry-on item may exceed overall dimensions of 55 inches (length + width + height)." To be sure of the requirements for carry-on and checked baggage, please check the following link: http://www.airtran.com/policies/carry-on_checked.aspx
* Check with your coaches as to what items they want you to carry on with you (e.g., jerseys, spikes, shorts, etc.)

HOUSING/BILLETING INFORMATION:
We just received the name of the family you'll be staying with in Atlanta. The family's name is Lasiter. Helen Lasiter, the mom, is actually from Minnesota. They have the youngest Ultimate players in Paideia School. According to Dave Clauson, tournament director, the Lasiters have a history of being a source of great luck. Every team they've housed has been in the Paideia Cup final. Let's keep their streak alive!!!! I will be contacting Helen Lasiter today and will post more information as soon as I receive it (address, phone number, directions, etc.)

GROUND TRANSPORTATION:
After a bit of searching and negotiating, we were able to get a reasonably good deal on two 8-passenger Sienna vans through Alamo. The challenge was finding a rental firm that was open late on Sunday and that didn't require rental vehicles just to get to the rental vehicles. We managed to get a little over 30% off their Internet rates with a little (ok, a lot) of begging. The vans will be available at the Atlanta Airport upon arrival and will need to be returned between 7:00 - 7:30 on Sunday evening.

ATHLETE PARTICIPATION FEES:
The total participation fee for each of the 14 guys on the Varsity Team is $460.00.
Each participant has already paid $225. The balance of $235 per athlete is due ASAP. Please get your checks payable to "Hopkins Ultimate" to your coach or directly to:
Sheri Brenden
2317 Archers Lane
Minnetonka, MN 55305

Anyone whose full payment is not received before the Friday departure WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TRAVEL WITH THE TEAM!!

Your fee includes: airline ticket ($311.20), 1st checked bag fee ($15), rental vehicles and gas, coaches travel and per diem expenses, tournament registration fee, and host family gift.

If anyone has any questions re: any of the travel arrangements, please feel free to call me at 612-508-6965. I'll be happy to explain anything I can.

Thanks for allowing me to help. And may the winds of great fortune be at the backs of our men.

Skills Clinic Hosted by Pop

Pop is an elite women's club team in the area. Yes, we'll be at Paideia Cup, but those who cannot attend and other readers of this blog:

Varsity Boys Practice

Boys make sure that you are at practice ready to play at 6:00. We don't have a ton of day light and we don't want to spend it warming up and lacing up shoes.

If you have to be there a half an hour in advance to be ready, do so. The team will begin warming up at about 5:45 so we use practice time for practice.

At this point in the season coaches need to know if you are going to be at practices. Make sure you let them know.

Lets get ready for Atlanta, there isn't much time.

*UPDATED* Housing NEEDED for the Hustle

What is needed in terms of Hosting:
-At least 3, possibly 4 Families to host full teams for the Hustle.
-10 (possibly more) families to host for SJR (2-3 kids per house)
They have 30 players coming (14 girls, 16 guys).
They'd bus down here on Friday the 8th to some central location and the host families would go pick up their kids - the players would stay with the host family for Friday and Saturday nights. Families would then be responsible for getting the players to the fields on Saturday morning and picking them up and the end of play Saturday afternoon .Then returning them to the field for play on Sunday morning w/ all their gear, and they'd return to Canada from the fields at the end of play on Sunday. The players - all HS students to the best of my knowledge - will sign a waiver agreeing to abide by all family rules and expectations of behavior. The kids will know that they'll be asked to leave if they fail to comply and they will be turned over to the cruel custody of the Canadian coaches ...... We'll let Hosting Families know if their players have special dietary needs or food or other allergies.

I have 3 families at the moment right now saying that they will host. So PLEASE if you can host either a whole team or a few Canadian players either post in the comment section or e-mail me @ Rabrams91@gmail.com

Thank you so far to all the parents and players that have volunteered their time to help out with the Hustle.

We might only need 4 families, but we might need A LOT more than that. So please, ask your parents and post if you are interested in hosting.
