Please remember to tell your captains whether or not you're able to attend workouts. Communication is another Hurt intangible.
Recruiting! Keep your captains aware of the recruits you're throwing with, especially for ladies - this is truly a whole program responsibility and everyone should be doing his or her part. Some ideas:
ask your gym teacher if you can teach Ultimate during a class
step 1: casual throwing with you, a normal Hurtem; step 2: casual throwing with you and a captain/experienced player or small group; step 3: try a practice & meet a coach
ever played ultimate in the snow? laying out is easy!
Keep your eye on the blog, there are sure to be updates soon about practices and tournaments. Erin
If you receive a postcard from USA Ultimate regarding dues renewal, you can disregard this! Your dues were paid for as part of your registration, and we are taking care of all the renewals for you.
I hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving. It is time to put the orders in for the sweatshirts and get them in the mail so we can have them for the long and cold upcoming winter. However, before I order them, i need to have the money before ordering them. The final cost on them is 29 dollars. This can be cash or check made out to me. If you have any questions please post them on the comment section or email me or erin, and she can forward emails on to me also. Please get the money to me soon so that we can get the order on it's way.
Another 2 weeks have passed of our Winter season. Are you recruiting? Remember to email me if you've thrown with a newb.
Thank you to Ratner, Val & Lieberman for doing their part.
I would recommend you try to throw outside this week. Chicago Invite felt a lot like this last year. It's hard for us to replicate windy and cold practice situations (especially indoors), so when the weather cooperates - go throw outside for a while.
We wont have workouts this week because of thanksgiving break. Thank you to those who came today. Make sure to keep up workouts on your own through the long weekend --
So girls are ordering sweatshirts. We want to get them sooner rather than later, however we wanted to spread this to everyone, guys on jv and varsity, alumni, parents, etc, that are interested in a Hopkins ultimate sweatshirt. I posted a link below to show you what our sweatshirt design is. I think it would be awesome if we got them and all looked united, however this is extra money that is not part of the money your parents paid for registration. The more people we get to purchase a sweatshirt the less they will be. As of now, only estimating for nine people, the sweatshirts are 31 dollars. If you are interested please post below with your size, and the name you would like to have on your sweatshirt. I will keep those interested updated on the price as hopefully more people decide to get them.
There will be a varsity captain's practice on Thursday November 11th at 3:15 pm at Lion's park in Golden Valley. This will be our last time outside most likely, so everyone needs to be there. Again, if you can't make it, call me or bumsted. --
Both Parents and Players did a great job rallying to cover the Halloween weekend Cub shifts, so THANK YOU for your time and energy.
Please keep in touch with your captains about whether or not you can attend workouts (or if you're healing).I will be attending these workouts intermittently so I can see with my own eyes who's putting in the work.
Ladies and Gentlemen: The 2010-2011 Hopkins Varsity Ultimate Team
*Please note that nothing is permanent on this team. Anyone can be cut and anyone can be brought up. If you are not on the team, keep working, come to workouts, and prove your improvement. Call a coach or captain if you have questions*

Lets work hard boys. We all need to show up to workouts and practices once they start in the winter. Check the blog everyday. Get your team to practices, or we will all have to work to fill their hole.
We haven't had practice for awhile and it's time we get into shape. We may not have the numbers this year but we can easily be the most in shape team in minnesota to beat the other teams, no matter their numbers. We will be making this a typical thing. Work outs start at 3:00 in the Lindbergh center. We will work hard and hopefully it won't go late. I understand that all of you are good students and care about doing homework, which i support and act on myself, however, you are part of a team and you need to make it your priority also. See you tomorrow. We'll have a blast together, like we always do!
Since the fall season is wrapping up in the next week or so, we wanted to remind you of your winter responsibilities:
1) help raise $$ - Cub Fundraiser October 30-31st. All HUrtems share this responsibility and so far the parents have done most (if not all) of the work: Sign up
2) heal - Rest, Ice, Compress & Elevate anything that's been bothering you. 3) get stronger - Improve. Prevent injury. 4) throw & catch - with purpose; with power. 5) recruit - the coaches challenge you to get ONE person who's never played ultimate to throw with you every TWO weeks*. 6) review the rules
*the HUrtem with the most recruits who stay and play spring ultimate will receive a prize.
This is 10th-12th grade boys plus those we've already talked to about trying out. If you are unsure if this applies to you, please call a coach or a captain.
If you cannot attend a tryout, it is highly recommended that you notify a coach ASAP.
Players, if you're in town and free tomorrow it's your last chance of the season to have some fun selling hot dogs and hamburgers at Cub! We have some parents working, but it would be great to have a few players as well, so let me know if you are interested in helping out for a few hours. We're there from 10:30-5:30, and if you want to come for even a couple hours, that would be great!
The sun was shining, and HURT was in good form as they played 4 games each today. Hopkins Black easily won all 4 games, only allowing 4 points all day. Hopkins Silver played hard against some really good teams, even scoring a few points against the second seed, and won their last game 12-0 with the Varsity team cheering them on from the sidelines! It was a great end to a wonderful day of Ultimate! Once again our players showed what great spirit they have by ending their cheer for the losing team by singing "Oh Canada" to them...I was pretty impressed that they knew the words! They are enjoying the bbq at the field right now, and I'm sure will come back to the hotel ready for showers, hot baths, or ice baths depending on their aches and pains, but I'm guessing they'll all sleep well tonight! We'll try and put some pictures and or video up later tonight!
It's 45 and sunny in Winnipeg and our two teams are warming up for their first games! We arrived at the Holiday Inn about 8:45 last night, and everyone was in their room with lights out by 10:30. We'll keep you posted on the blog or twitter as the day progresses.
PLEASE, if there is any part(check, authorization form, passport number and birth date) of your registration that I don't have, bring it to practice TONIGHT! These were due yesterday! I need to send the passport information up to the border control ahead of time, and I have other things to do besides calling individual players to track this stuff down. If you want to get on the bus Friday, be responsible now. Thank you!
As an addendum to Haley's post, I spoke with our sales rep at the Holiday Inn this morning who told me that the forecast for this weekend is for weather in the 60's! If you were in Winnipeg last year you know that this is like a heat wave! It could still be very chilly in the morning and forecasts aren't always correct, so please pack for all conditions. We are bringing field food, but if there are specific things you always eat at games you may want to pack them.
We will be collecting and holding onto your passports when you board the bus.
I know there are plenty of people where this will be your first ultimate tournament or possibly first out of town tournament. In order to help you out a little I will give you what to bring/ what I bring to tournaments. Do with this information, as you want.
Friday: Wear comfortable clothes for the bus. Bring homework, movies, pillows, blankets and snacks. It's an 8-hour bus ride and you want to be comfortable! You also need on the bus your wallet, with id and passport. I would bring your [reusable] water bottle onto the bus also.
Saturday: Prepare for every type of weather.
Socks, non-cotton if you have, and lots of them.
Cleats, possibly two pair if you have them for back up
Shoes to wear to the fields
Sweats to wear to the fields and during your Bye round
Long under armor pants (cold gear)
Compression shorts
Regular shorts
Dark and white shirt- we are making jerseys that we will be wearing but brings these anyways
Long under armor shirt
Windbreaker/rain coat
Gloves
Hat/headband for when it's cold
LOTS OF LAYERS- if it gets cold you will want them
Ultimate bag with a disc, water bottle and your own snacks. If you like granola bars bring those, if you like salty things bring it.
A big garbage bag to put your ultimate bag in if it rains
Saturday Night-
At the hotel we are staying at there is a pool and hot tub. If you are interested bring a swimsuit.
PJ's
Toiletries
Sunday-
Same clothing as Saturday and a change of clothes to wear home from the fields if you please.
If you have any questions please let me know, also if you are a returning player and have advice on something else to bring please let everyone know also.
We've been handing out forms for HBTS at practice lately. If you are going to HBTS and have not yet gotten a form, please find Erin at practice to get a copy.
These forms need to be returned as soon as possible. Please contact Sara or Erin if you have questions.
The USAU Central Regional tournament is this weekend at the Twin Cities Polo Fields in Maple Plain, MN. The top teams from this tournament will advance to Nationals in Sarasota, FL!
Every year many HUrt alumni and coaches compete. Here's who you can expect to see this year:
In the Women's bracket, Hert alumni Elise Rasmussen is playing for Pop, the #2 seed. Top 3 go to Nationals.
In the Mixed bracket, #1 seed Drag'n Thrust includes coaches Jeanine, Tom and Alicia. #5 seed, Evil Twin, includes coaches Lou, Erin and Dan. The reigning Mixed World Champions, CLX (Iowa) are seeded #3. Top 4 go to Nationals.
As always, the open bracket has many teams with HUrt alumni, including Madison Club, Sub Zero, and Prairie Fire. HUrt coaches Chris and Eric are playing for Sub Zero (#4) and Climax (#5) respectively. Top 3 go to Nationals.
And in the Masters' bracket, Surly, a Minnesota team, is coming off their 2nd place finish at World's.
You can follow all the action through the USAU Score Reporting tool, right here:

Practice, 6pm on Thursday. Be there, we'll be learning new tricks.
Parents, we still have seats available on the bus and would love to have you join us! There is a $65.00 charge for the round trip transportation, just to cover the cost of our bus. We will be traveling in a comfortable coach bus equipped with wireless Internet. A number of you have expressed an interest, but we now need a firm commitment. Please let me know ASAP if I don't already have you confirmed; I need to let the Holiday Inn know how many rooms to hold for us. The group rate they have extended to us is $135.00 per night which includes all taxes. They will hold the room for you as part of our booking, and then put it on your credit card at check in.
If you have any questions about traveling with us please contact me and I'll be happy to talk to you about it. If you don't know much about the game, this is a great way to learn. I didn't know a huck from a layout, had no idea how long games lasted, what a soft-cap was, or even who was supposed to be doing what on the field at any given time. Then I went to Chicago. Todd Leonard saw how confused I looked and gave me a little tutorial on Ultimate. I was hooked! I guarantee if you come to a tournament someone will be happy to teach you everything you need to know to be an informed spectator. Some might consider me a glutton for punishment because I continue to travel to every tournament I possibly can! But I can honestly say, that despite the sometimes poor weather, you'll never find better entertainment, and you will most definitely find yourself proud of and impressed with the way our kids play this game! It's also very refreshing in this day and age, when many sporting events seem to be filled with fighting and yelling, to see our players discuss the issue when a foul is called and work through the problem. How many other sports do you know of where they cheer for the other team after the game, or give an award to a player they think displayed the most spirit? They learn about a lot more than Ultimate out on those fields.

I need to know by Wednesday, October 6th if you are planning on coming. I will be finalizing the numbers with the hotel first thing Thursday morning.
Notice these are in alphabetical order, Black and Silver rosters will be announced at practice.
Please tell your parents that you're going to Hold Back the Snow, find your passport, finish registering for HUrt and tell your teachers that we're leaving at noon on Friday October 15th.

What to bring: Cleats, White and Black jersey, Too much water, snacks for the sidelines (it is a long day without much food, so bring a lot of protein and carbs to munch on), clothes for the cold because it is supposed to be around 50 degrees all weekend, and anything else to keep you comfortable.
Get some sleep tonight because it is an early one tomorrow
ALL PLAYERS WHO ARE TRYING OUT FOR VARSITY PAY ATTENTION
There is a tryout tournament that is mandatory if you want us to know you are trying out for varsity. You must go to try out. All people 10th grade and up and those we have talked to who are freshmen are able to try out. If you are not one of these people, and you would like to be considered, talk to a coach and a captain.
It is called Exit 69. It is in Northfield, Minnesota at St. Olaf and Carleton College, and yes, it is a college tournament. We will be carpooling there around 8 on both saturday and sunday and we play either three or four games a day. More details will be posted once the tournament gets closer. But this is the base of what you need to know. Varsity tryout. College tournament. Northfield. Two Full Days 8-4or5. We will carpool.
If you are interested, POST YOUR NAME in the comments, and we will make a final roster for tryouts later this week with more details. If you can not come, but want to tryout, talk to captains and coaches and post that as well
Please remember that if you are signing up to play this weekend at Exit 69, you must be aregistered member of our team! There are some people who have posted that they are attending who have not yet sent in their forms and check. You can find all the forms in the registration post(linked on the right) Bring your completed forms and check with you to practice tonight.
We understand that there are some players that are still deciding if they want to register. If this applies to you, we need a medical authorization form from you if you want to participate at practice. This is for liability reasons, your safety, and does not fully commit you to HUrt or cost you anything.
See the registration post (linked on the right) to find a copy of this form.
EVERYONE
As it gets colder, please dress for the weather. You should not be shivering at practice, you should be sweating. Long tights and long sleeve synthetic/wool tops are recommended. It is every Hurtem's responsibility to be Toasty Warm.
We need to know how many of you are interested in participating in the fundraising opportunity at the Swarm game on January 8th, that Stephen Elias talked about at the registration meeting. This is another opportunity for us to raise a large amount of funds for the team, and it sounds like a fun evening!
We would have to sell 150 tickets with a face value of $42.00. These would cost us $17.00, and we would sell them for 20 or 25 and keep the profit. During the game team members would sell chuck-a-balls, which they use for a competition after the game, for $2.00 each. We would keep all profit from the balls sold. They have two groups selling at each game so there would be competition to try and sell a lot of balls. We are only going to do this if we get enough people to commit ahead of time.
Please contact Stephen or post a comment if you are interested. If we don't have enough people in one week we will not be able to do this.
First I'd like to thank all of the parents who signed up for a shift at Cub during our registration meeting. For those of you who didn't get an opportunity, you're in luck, it's not too late! We've got a few shifts left that could use one more person. Please email me at semekler@gmail.com if you are able to help out with any of the following dates. Thank you!
Practice tonight is at 6pm at Lindbergh #1. Daylight is limited, so please be ready to warm up at 6.
For boys 9th grade and up, we will be planning for the Varsity Tryout Tournament this weekend, October 2-3, in Northfield, MN. If you have a conflict this weekend, you need to tell me at practice tonight.
The following players, have expressed interest in making the trip to Winnipeg for Hold Back the Snow. Hold Back the Snow is the weekend of 10/16. We depart Friday 10/15 at 12:30 and return early Monday morning.

The above list includes the responses that we have received so far. If you are on this list and should not be, please post a comment. Again, this is not the final list of who will be attending and who will not be, but just a list of who has let the club know they are available to be considered for an invite. Unfortunately we have limited space on the bus and on our two teams, so not everyone who wants to go will be able to. If you haven't already submitted your name, thedeadline has passed; we will still have a waitlist after we pick teams from the names above. The only changes we are asking for are from the people already on the list. Remember, ifyou don't have a valid passport you cannot go to Winnipeg.
PLEASE POST WITH YOUR STATUS CHANGES BY 12 NOON FRIDAY 9/24. WE WILL BE PICKING TEAMS AFTER THAT TIME.
I have reports that Maetzold is under several inches of water - so we will cancel practice tonight.
Things you can do inside after you finish your homework...
1) practice switching grips 2) pivot & fake - keep your balance, try using a chair in front of you as a mark 3) try to spin a disc like this super cool guy
Please get your registration forms and checks in as soon as possible; now that we are holding actual pratices it's important for us to have you registered. You can bring your forms and check to practice tonight-I will be there at the beginning of practice to collect any registrations, or please mail asap to -

Tuesday, September 14th, 7:00pm Hopkins High School lunchroom
Players and parents, this is the official beginning of our season! We will have a short meeting followed by registration. Forms will be available on the blog for you to print and bring with you and we will also have all forms available at the meeting.
At practice we said it would be on wednesday, but because it is rosh hashana then, it is now tuesday. This means that we need to spread the word to people about the changes.
What to bring: white and dark shirt, more water than you think you need, cleats and a disc(if you have them), and at least one friend
1. Our main priority is to have a girls team. So recruiting is not a suggestion, it is necessary. The men's teams should do their part to recruit as well. This is something that affects the whole club (i.e. HBTS, a coed tournament).
2. No decisions have been made about what happens if we don't have enough girls.
3. We have options that would allow all girls who register to play in some capacity - but again it fully depends on how many girls we get. I'll be talking more about this at practices, but you can also call me if you have concerns.
2014 practices are over. 2015 practices will start in January.
Winter is for two things: -healing all injuries -getting stronger
be on the lookout for Boys and Girls workout schedules, coming soon.
All players should bring the following to every practice: cleats, a dark shirt, a WHITE (not gray) shirt, your OWN water, and a disc (if you have one). Dress for the weather. We play through all weather (if fields are playable) except thunder and lightning. Every HUrtem is responsible for being Toasty Warm, and for transporting their water/gear TO AND FROM the fields. We leave the field better than we found it

New online forms! Click on the link below and follow the prompts.
The following Tournaments and approx dates are for PLANNING purposes only! I receive many requests for tournament dates, practice days etc... for the entire year. This is quite difficult to do however, I'm trying to inform parents/players as early as possible. I do not have exact dates/times for several events Unless our participation is marked CONFIRMED our involvement is contingent on our 'Bid' being accepted. This means players signed up accurately, parents signed up accurately and their availability to provides transportation and/or chaperone at these events.
NOTE: Many changes are happening with our 'traditional' tournament format. Events we always plan to participate at during the year have changed their dates, bid process or in one case, the tournament itself may not happen this spring. We are exploring alternate options as noted below. The list below is NOT COMPLETE. It is what I have at this time. Thanks, Debbi.
