Attn JV Parents: need volunteers & drivers.
Pursuant to Mike's post below, we really need adult drivers to go to get our team to Madison and back again. Parents, if you aren't busy that weekend, it would really help the team. Contact me if you are interested or have questions.
We also need parents to volunteer to drive us to our two scheduled away games:
April 10 - Twin Cities Academy (POSTPONED - TO BE RESCHEDULED)
May 8 - Hastings
I also need another parent help me coordinate these activities, to be a "team parent." I already have a volunteer who is willing to share some of the duties. Mostly this encompasses confirming rides for a given week from a list. It's not difficult, but it is a critical task.
If you can drive us to our Thursday games, or if you can help coordinate, please contact me (see comments), or post in the comments.

GIRLS - game tomorrow against EP at HOME
Ladies -
Our game tomorrow is going to be at the Lindbergh fields (instead of away at EP) at 6 pm. Please be there and ready to warm up at 5:15. Bring tape, blister band aids, extra socks, ice, whatever, for your injuries and sore muscles. I know we are all tired but we can do it!
p.s. Kelley would like us all to bring warm clothes and be ready to stay for awhile after the game to talk about this weekend. We need to go over as a whole team things we did well, things we need to work on, etc so we can practice effectively. Please try to make this work - it will not be long, but be sure you have clothes to wear!
See you there.

JV Spring info
Because our fields need some time to re-establish, we won't have official JV practice this week. Also, our first game against Twin Cities Academy has been postponed because of fields. I'm working with their coach to find an alternate time, maybe during one of our practices next week.
However, we may call an impromptu (come if you can) practice later in the week. Our First Official practice is Monday the 14th on the Lindberg fields behind Hopkins High School. Be there at 4:30, we'll go to at least 7:15.
This does leave us with a shorter time to come together, so make sure that YOU are ready to take the field. Make a small effort everyday to prepare. Do your push-ups and go running at least 3 times between now and next Monday. Read about ultimate. Go out and throw with a teammate or buddy. Take 5 minutes to visualize yourself playing.
More to come soon.

St. Cloud JV Face-off, April 26 (week after mudbath)
The JV Face-off is a one day tournament specifically for JV/B squads. It's in St. Cloud from 9 am to 6pm on Saturday, April 26. Should be great competition, costs are low and it's only an hour away! Please put in the comments whether you can go or not, and then bug your pals until they comment as well. This is separate from the Granite City Classic in May, also in St. Cloud, more to come on that soon.
JV at Mudbath! April 19 & 20
Just to make it clear, the JV and the women's teams have been accepted to Madison Mudbath. We didn't think we'd get it, so we now need to know quick if you can make it. JV team, plz post in the comments if you can make it, or if you can't, or if you've got a 50% chance of going, or if you can only make it for 1 day, etc. Also, I know it's during passover, but we've made accommodations in Madison in other years, more to come on that.
Last year was a real blast, and a big step up for a lot of players. Our hosts were great, and the tournament is well run. Tell me if you want to go.

We're in!
SJR had to drop all teams from Madison Mudbath, so we're invited to the tournament (April 19-20).
Captains: please designate one of you to find out what kind of team we can field for this weekend. I need that info by TUESDAY.
Jennifer: please find parent drivers (selling point: this is often the fave tourney!)
Doc and Leslie: do we need billeting or stay with friends again?
H: cancel Stolaf scrimmage for that Sunday; try for a scrimmage at the YWCA on 29March (still waiting for time slot and info from Ron-the-man).
I'm in town this weekend, so just call.

CUB FOODS FUNDRAISER
Hey HUrt, for those of you who will be in town this Saturday
we are doing a fundraiser at Cub Foods.
We'll take all the help we can get, guys or girls.
When: Saturday, March 15
Time: 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
Where: The Cub Foods in Minnetonka at Highway 7 and 101.
The way it works is we go in and set up a booth at the exit and just
help people bag their groceries.
We make money by accepting tips and donations from people (we will
collect these at the booth).
We will need 4-5 people working at one time
Shifts are organized as follows:
Shift 1: 10:00-12:30
Shift 2: 12:30-3:00
Shift 3: 3:00-6:00
Just post a comment in the comment section with your name and the
shift(s) you would like to work.
Feel free to work more than one shift.
Make sure you show up about 10 min. before your shift.
It would be nice if we could have one or two parents there to stand at
the booth
so the kids can concentrate on bagging, and if anyone has a cash box
we can use
just leave a post in the comment section or bring it Saturday.
Other groups that have done this typically make about $1000.
P.S. If everyone could wear their jerseys (black preferably) that
would be great.
Feel free to call me with any questions.612-889-1339

SCHEDULE UPDATE
Due to spring break, practices at the JCC on Saturdays 15 and 22 are cancelled.
Regularly scheduled practices continuing are:
Sunday (all teams) 16 march 7-9p
Tuesday (varsity) 18 March
Sunday (all teams) 23 March 7-9p
Tuesday (varsity) 25 March
SATURDAY (all teams) 29 March 1-4pm @ YWCA
Sunday (all teams) 30 March 7-9p
HERt FORCE NOTICE:
Denver tix are being bought today. Coaches Jeanine and Lou are attending with you.
Mudbath is a no-go for us this year. But we got great contacts with the Stolaf team this past weekend, so plan on going to Northfield for scrimmaging that Sunday, 20 April. Look for further posts regarding this weekend.
Also look for a further post regarding a team meeting the week you get back from spring break. This meeting will consist of Xs and Os (so bring paper and writing implement) and another round of the Rules Test, so find your books.
A note on our Duluth tournament: I hope the girls had as much fun this weekend as I did. We had individuals step up and show some skills i think even they didn't know they had! But now we all know it and will be looking to them for leadership and filling out the depth of our team. A shout-out to Jey-Day, Peazles, and Chatty Kathy for calling lines and plays, and also to ChattyKathy and Laurel for receiving the "Step-Up" and "Focus" awards, respectively. This tournament has made me even more excited to see what this team can do the rest of the season!

DUCs Testing
Following the Parent/Player meeting, we will have our regularly scheduled 7-9p practice. However, this will be a bit different this week as we will be doing the Degrees of Ultimate Competency testing. This will consist of the written test (Ultimate and Hurt vocabulary, Xs and Os, rules test, etc) and part of the physical testing. For your viewing pleasure of what the complete test will consist of, check out the link to your right for DUCs Phase 1. Please bring your own writing utensil and notebook paper!
If you are new to Hopkins Ultimate this year and are not comfortable with taking the test at this time, there will be a Hopkins Ultimate Clinic for you, held by your friendly neighborhood coaches, Russ and H. Take notes if that's your thing, but be ready to do some drills too.

WANTED: People to help get fliers out for the Chili's Fundraiser!
Monday is the Chili's Fundraiser, and we really need to get some fliers out around different places.
This is where fliers need to get out:
-HHS (being taken care of)
-North (being taken care of)
-West: any one able to put some fliers up there??
-HHS parking lot on Monday
-Businesses around where the Chili's is located
Monday, does anyone have a free block and would be able to put fliers on people's cars??
I'm looking for as many as we can get, because it will go by fastest, main and Lindbergh
For the Businesses around Chili's, I would say, it needs to be done sometime this week, either Thursday or Friday: as many people that can help with that, that would be great!
I should have all the fliers printed out tonight.
Please post in the comment box if you can help with any of this... we need a lot of people to help with this so it can be done fast, and we can get the word out to more people
It is at the St. Louis Park Chili's from 4-10
Thanks

Varsity Boys win St. John's Indoor
In somewhat last minute form, the Varsity boys came together so that we could fulfill our commitment to sending 2 teams up to the St. John's one day indoor tournament.
Under the coaching direction of Greg Arenson and Robbie Shapiro, the JV boys also attended.
The Varsity boys faced Southwest High for their first game. The JV boys watched from the sidelines as they were in another pool and not scheduled to play until the next round. The game got off to a quick start for us and we were quickly ahead 13-2, but the Southwest coach (Chris Van Holmes) and I (coach Lou) agreed that we shouldn't waste the time and space, so we continued to play until our time was up. The boys finished with 20+ points and were primed to play another 5 games.
Next, the Varsity boys faced Eden Prairie. Defensively, the boys had some adjustments to make since the EP squad was much tougher. EP made some great plays and had a few lucky bounces go their way and finished with 5 goals, compared to Hopkins' 13.
Up next was Cretin Derham Hall. The Varsity boys had faced them a few weeks earlier in Duluth and were victorious. The boys rallied together this time and came out with some serious fire and energy, on the field, on the sidelines, and between points. Before we knew it, it was halftime and we were ahead of a very frustrated CDH squad 7-1.
The second half, however, belonged to CDH, scoring the first 3 points out of half. And then just a few points later, it was 11-10, Hopkins still leading, but barely. We called a timeout, relit the fire, and came out the next point and scored in just 3 throws -- the last being a huck to Simon Gottlieb. Recharged, the defense forced a turn on the second throw of the next point and punched it in for the game winning score. Hopkins wins 13-10.
We then went into bracket play and the two Hopkins teams were forced to face each other in the quarterfinals. Lou took the coaching reigns of the JV team for this game. The JV team looked AWESOME! They hucked it successfully several times, regularly got open downfield against Varsity defenders, and even skyed a some Junior and Senior Varsity players! Half time score was 7-4 and the JV put up one more in the second half. The JV team scored as many points against the Varsity as the Eden Prairie team did.
That was the last game for the JV team, finishing without a victory in the standings on the day, but it was a huge victory in terms of team progress. The improvement throughout the day was not only noticeable, but impressive! If this team can continue to make such great strides, then the future of Hopkins ultimate is incredibly promising!
We then had a rematch with EP in the semifinals with similar results. EP is a good team with some great leadership -- both in players and in coaching. We have some close friends on that team and enjoy the games we have against them. The final was 15-4.
In the other semifinal game, CDH had fallen behind Cathedral 9-4, but were storming back when time ran out, so we would face Cathedral in the finals.
It was the best game Hopkins has played this season. Cathedral is a team that doesn't turn it over. We were forced to come up with big defensive plays to get the disc. And that's just what we did. Greg Arenson's amazing downfield D, Mat Grewe's great dump D, and just an overall great team performance were just downright inspiring. The excitement was contagious and we took half 8-4.
The second half included a few missed opportunities, including a couple miscues in the endzone, but it did not slow down the massive momentum we had going for us. This is a sign of the progress this team has already made this season. Despite the setbacks, no confidence was lost and we just marched forward toward our goal. We put up point after point until we had won 15-8.
After the game, I spoke with a few of the Cathedral parents, who were numerous in attendance. They are a great group of people and they remind me of the great support group we have here at Hopkins. I look forward to the contribution the Cathedral community will provide to the ultimate community in the near future.

- Robbie Shapiro always makes a great positive impact on every level of our game
- The Got(t)lieb supernatural connection is something special to watch
- Steve Finn can sky!
- The progress by Smalter and Ethan is to be admired
- To the JV team: we couldn't have done it without your support!

Head's up for ladies:
The Executive Committee decided we should do an all-team player/parent meeting to inform everyone of our spring schedules and expectations; this date has tentatively been set for Sunday, 2 March from 5:30-7p (then the kids are there and ready for our 7-9p practice).
As the ladies' team had a meeting scheduled for next Sunday, hopefully you have that time blocked of for Ultimate-related stuff. We would like to put together a Playbook Practice for that day from 4:30-6, then we'll hit Chipotle or somewhere in downtown Hopkins, and be ready for regular Sunday practice at 7p at the Structure.
Please continue to check the blog for updates. And thanks for a great practice yesterday!

St. Johns Indoor 2/16
Hello all. As you will have read from Russel's previous post, the St. Johns Indoor high school tournament in St. Cloud is coming up a week from tomorrow, February 16th. Hurt will be sending two boys teams, Black and Silver. For varsity players who were not able to attend the Duluth Indoor Tournament over MLK weekend will get a chance to play on the black team. If any JV players are interested in going, there will be lots of chances for playing time, regardless of which team you are placed on.
THINGS TO KNOW:
1) Varsity captains will be coaching the teams in St. Cloud
2) This is a one day tournament! You need to arrive at the Lindbergh Center at 11 am Saturday morning, and we will be returning home after midnight, so parents need to sign off on this!!!!
3) If you would like to attend, you must notify one of the varsity captains (Greg Arenson, Sam Brickwedde, Gregg Milbrath, or Robbie Shapiro) by e-mail by Friday the 15th.
Greg: garenson@gmail.com
Brick: slbrick11@gmail.com
Milbrath: milbrathgregg@gmail.com

JV St. Cloud Indoor
Next Saturday, the 16th of February, there is a one-day indoor tournament at St. Johns. It lasts all day and finishes late. Who wants to go? Can you (or get a parent to) drive? If we have more interest than spots, I'll make determinations based on 1) practice attendance/communication, 2) response time to this post.
JV Practice on Saturday
For those of you that need a reminder, practice is this Saturday at 2 pm at the JCC. Afterward, we'll either find a room at the JCC to chat or go to Chipotle. There's some dates I want to run by you and I want to share some things about the team and season, so let me know if you can't make it.

JV meeting Postponed . . . Again
I haven't been pushing the meeting agenda very hard, and there was an obvious error in the date of the previous JV meeting post, but 3 people confirming the date is not enough. So I'm pushing it back till 4 pm after practice next Saturday the 9th at the JCC.
We do need to meet to discuss some important issues, e.g. leadership, hammer out tournament dates and interest, and make sure everyone will have a Jersey.

People needed to help sell tickets @ lunch for Hurt Jam
Hurt Jam is right around the corner and we need to start selling tickets. For people that buy them at school during lunch the cost is $5, and it is $6 at the door. From Wednesday to Friday we are going to be selling them at lunch, and help is greatly needed for selling tickets. Around 3 people are needed to sell tickets during each lunch, and so we could get 3 people per lunch every day that would be amazing!
I know 1st and 3rd have a good amount of ultimate players in each, but I do not know of many in 2nd or 4th. If you want you can post in the comment section if you can help sell tickets... or just show up.
Thanks
P.S. We need a cash box. If anyone has one that can be borrowed for the week, please post that in the contact section... again Thanks!!

Mandatory Varsity Meeting
In lieu of practice on February 12, the Varsity team will be hosting a meeting at Asa's mother's house (thank you Graffs). We will plan to meet from 6:00 - 9:00. They will be providing pasta for dinner, and we will, again, divvy up the details of other foodstuffs in the next week or so.
We will be discussing our goals and how to achieve them, a tournament schedule and plans for the rest of the year - including roster changes.
Please RSVP in the comments section (If you have any specialties you would like to provide for food, put them in here, or you will be assigned next week).
Thanks,
Jake

Ultimate Boot Camp Update
Due to overwhelming dropouts among the interested, the new plan for Boot Camp will be for everyone planning on attending to be at Lifetime for training on Tuesdays from 4-5pm and Saturdays from 1-2pm. Please make these adjustments to your schedule and attend as regularly as you can.
Cost may increase a small amount due to the number of teammates changing their plans at such late notice. (Just so everyone realizes - the price was based on 16 people, so with only 7-10 people actually showing up, there will have to be a change).
Thank you for your understanding.

Varsity Boys Workouts
Hey guys,
We are going to start working out as a team this week after school. The workout should take about an hour to an hour and a half.
This will only be Monday and Wednesday
We realize that this week is finals so if you need to stay after school with a teacher please do so and work hard to get ready for your finals so you can come play ultimate.
If we (capt's) do not here from you it will be an "unexcused" absence.
Please do your best to be there. You will be helping out yourself and your team.
ALSO.....
Senior boys on the Winter League roster: The league has started and we have had a low number of people showing up. These games are fun and we really want you there.
Thanks.

Ultimate Boot Camp @ Lifetime Fitness
If you are interested in attending the program at Lifetime Fitness on Cedar Lake Road in Golden Valley, here's what you need to know:
Cost: ~$225 for 10 weeks, twice a week.
1st Meeting on Thursday, Jan 17th @ the SLP Lifetime. Please bring 1/2 the $ due, and your schedule to plan for your training sessions.
TRAINER is Dustin Greenig (952.541.7172) and will meet with all interested parties to go over the training schedule and goals to be accomplished.
SESSIONS: after the initial session on Thursday, we're planning on having 2 groups, Group A meets on Tuesdays @ 4pm - 5pm, Group B meets on Thursdays @ 4pm-5pm, and Group A&B meet Saturday @ 1pm-2pm (2 trainers).
With varsity having practice on Tuesdays @ 4:30, I anticipate most of the varsity boys participating in this program to be in group B, but I know that won't be the case for everyone. I anticipate most ladies and JV players to be in group A. Dustin asked that we have no more than 12 in any given session, and 8-10 being ideal. Please do your best to coordinate schedules to allow for this to be effective, worthwhile and a great experience for all involved.
EXPECTATIONS: This program is going to focus on developing 4 aspects of your game: Speed, Quickness, Height & Footwork.
You will learn a standard Warmup Routine to use before practices, games, and tournaments.
We will get a publishable workout regimen to use to train in the off-season, and prepare for next year's round of personal training.
And you are expected to peak at the end of the program (End of March) for our first tournament in April.
Please contact me or Dustin (dgreenig@lifetimefitness.com, 952.541.7172) with any questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Coach Jake

SCHEDULE CHANGES!!
Please note the schedule changes on the calender (pay no attention to the odd time zone):
Tuesdays- JV at Williston Center from 5-7p.
Every other Saturday- split between Varsity and Ladies at JCC from 2-4p. (Coaches decided it was more important to have our TEAMs practice together, even though it is less often. All the more reason for you to be proactive during the week with your winter training so we can focus only on Ultimate skills and drills at practice.)
This Saturday is Varsity practice.
Any questions or notes, post in comment section.

First JV Indoor Practice
What: JV indoor practice
When: Tuesday, January 8th, 2008, 5-7pm
Where: Williston Center map
Our first real indoor practice! It starts now, so be thinking about what kind of a season you will make this. Be there or be a square, or lemme know if you can't make it.
Something that I should mention: for legal reasons, everybody coming to a Hurt practice needs to be a member of the UPA. For indoor practices, we want you to be a Hurt team member as well, because space can be expensive. Registration forms are in the links on the right.

Girls' winter workout stuff
Hey girls,
So starting after winter break is over, we'll be doing a three-times weekly workout plan with each other made me jeanine the machine. As we talked about at the meeting, we're pairing up for a few reasons. I paired you girls up with people I believe you could motivate or could motivate you to work your hardest in order to live up to our goal of being the most in shape girls' team at Nationals this year. So partners are:
Kari, Laurel, and Angela
Mara and Sarah
Haley and Jane
Emma and Val
Erin and Kathy
Elise and Jenna, and
Rachel and me
We're gonna work out every monday, wednesday, and thursday at 3. If your partner can't make it, then just hook on with another group. This is when the commitment we were talking about at the meeting begins. Don't be nervous, we'll start slowly.
I'm excited but before that even starts, if someone wants to host a movie night or something towards the end of break, post on the comments section. I'll be out of town so I wont be able to organize it but you guys can do it just fine.
love you all

HERt Force Meeting
We had a great meeting last Sunday with the ladies' team. And just so the parents know, the kids were challenged to fundraise $2000 by 1 March 2008 to help with expenses to go to a travel tournament in Denver in April. I will email you my list of tournaments for the spring season; and soon they will also all be on the calender here on the blog.
Also, I would like to hold a Parent/Player meeting for HERt on 24 Feb. It would be for about 2 hours, sometime in the afternoon. Is anybody willing and able to host?
And if there are any parents out there new to Ultimate, you are more than welcome to come check out a practice. Come see why your kid loves Ultimate!

We're Done With Outdoor Practice
Yeah, it's been pretty... Toasty Warm out there, so we're calling a halt to outdoor practices. Thanks to all of you who have been dedicated enough to keep improving your game through this last month. The lights at Maetzold were pretty CUT UP, so thanks to the City of Hopkins and Ron Curme for hooking us up with them.
Indoor practice time is slowly being scheduled (honestly, we coaches are dragging our feet a little, and the local "Powers That Be" aren't especially helpful either). Keep an eye out on the blog for updates and keep your eyes peeled for possible practice spaces as well.
See you Monday the 10th at the All-Team Meeting with special guest Callahan Award Winner Dan Heijmen!

It's darn cold, but that doesn't keep us from our duty. Dress really warm today, that means many layers. Bring your long Johns and wear an extra pair of socks (wool if you got 'em). If you have 2 poly longsleeve shirts, wear both.
