Indoor practices are coming soon!

Hurtems, Hertets and Parents,

I hope your holidays were fun and that the remainder of winter break is relaxing.  Here are a few items you should be aware of as we get closer to indoor practices.

1) If you were injured in the fall, I will expect to see you fully healed and rested for practice
2) Winter is when you get stronger.  You can expect that we'll jump into conditioning right away.
3) Sunday all team practices are from 8-10pm.  I know this is late.  Please let me know at the beginning of practice if you have to leave early.
4) Recruiting is still very important.  Bring friends to practices (especially ladies) and we all get to have a lot more fun.

5) Varsity - This year is a talent heavy year.  Your spot is not safe.  Work hard, go to workouts, communicate to your captains when you can't.  Want it more.

I will have the calendar feature loaded with all practice dates this week and some of the tournament dates up by then too.

If you have questions, send me an email or give me a call.
Looking forward to getting back to work,
Erin

Girls Workouts!

We are going to be starting workouts next week! Wooo! We will begin right after school on Thursday, so bring your workout clothes and whatever else you need. You can change and keep your stuff in the bathroom in the Lindbergh center. When you get there, try to go for a warm-up run (about 1 mile=six laps on the track), and afterward we'll move downstairs and Shosh and I will lead a workout.

We will be doing this from now on Mondays and Thursdays. If you cannot make it for some reason, let me or Shoshana know, we need to plan these workouts based upon how many people will be there. We can't wait to see you there!!

The time has finally come boys, this process is never easy and we appreciate every one who came out and gave it all to try out for this team. We want to make sure that it is very clear these rosters are fluid. If you are on this roster continue to work just as hard and get ready to get better. If you do not see your name below, please understand it is always hard to make these cuts, we are a very senior laden team and with very few open spots. None the less if you continue to work hard at practices and come to work outs you are only helping your self.

What now?

There have been some questions about our schedule, for the remainder of the year, so I will explain once again in case you weren't at the fall meeting. We are now done with practice until January, when all teams will begin indoor practices. I know the coaches have encouraged everyone to continue throwing as often as possible, so try and take advantage of everyday we get without snow, and throw a disc with a friend for a while after school.

As we get closer to January, information regarding days and times for practices will be posted on the blog, so check back at that point. School doesn't resume after winter break until January 9th, so practices won't start before that week.

Also, I'd like to remind parents about the new "Parents Google Group" which you can sign up for on the right side of the blog page, under the calendar. This is a way for parents to communicate with each other and receive information from the Coaches and the Board.

Club Nationals start today

Hurtems and Hertets,

Just a reminder that Club Nationals are taking place in Sarasota, FL starting today and going through the weekend.  There are a LOT of Hopkins alumni and coaches who are currently representing our family there.  Lots of them are reporting scores on Twitter.  See below.

Open:
Subzero: Greg Arenson, Josh Klane, Evan Klane, Chris Demet
Chain Lightning:  Mike Arenson
Madison Club: Colin Camp, Ben Feldman

Mixed:
Drag'n Thrust: Alicia Carr, Martha Harris, Tallis Boyd, Jeanine Kooman

Women:
Revolution: Sarah Hoistad

Other ways to keep up to date:

USAU, Live Streaming, Skyd Scoreboard

Watching high level ultimate is a very good way to learn more about how you can improve as a player, and what a lot of our strategy is actually supposed to look like.

Have fun!
Erin

*Note: I'm sure I missed people, feel free to add to this list in the comments.

Last week at Cub for the season!

We're almost done with Cub; one day left! I could really use some help for the first shift if anyone has a little time they can spare. 11-1:30 is the most important time to have coverage, so even if you're only available for part of the shift please consider joining me so we can finish off the season strong! The link to the calendar is on the right, under this week's schedule. Thank you to all the people who've gone over and above, working multiple shifts this year; we couldn't do this without you!!!

This money is already helping every member of the team by keeping our fees lower than they were 2 years ago. We were able to subsidize part of the Winnipeg trip, and will continue to do that for ALL teams throughout the year as they participate in a variety of tournaments next spring.

Varsity Try Outs

Varsity try outs tonight for 10th-12th graders ONLY unless you have been told otherwise by a captain or a coach. We are cleated up and running by 5 30 tonight so be there before that to warm up and throw. This is one of the last remaining opportunities to show up and make the Varsity squad, make an effort to be there and if not let a coach of captain know. See every one tonight

Varsity Tryouts

Hurtems,

This week continues our Varsity Tryouts.  Reminder that this is for 10-12th graders and those who we have already invited to participate.

If you're not sure if you should be coming to these tryouts, please ask a captain or a coach.  I highly recommend that you notify me, Z or Bum if you cannot attend.

Hertets - Mia and Shosh have plans for you, please stay tuned for information about captains practices and workouts.

JV - If you are not eligible to tryout for Varsity this year, please take the next 2 weeks or so to do a lot of throwing.  It is still possible that there will be a JV only practice before it snows - so please continue to check the blog frequently.

Thanks!
Erin

HBTS winners!

Hopkins Black Captains Mekler, Bumsted and Bronstein with the coveted HBTS plaque, which will once again list Hopkins Ultimate as winner of their tournament!

All the Hurtums from Black and Silver

The Black team celebrating their win!!

Congratulations to both teams who played so well in wind that, at times, was taking discs to fields far, far away from the ones we were playing on, and in biting cold that could defeat teams on it's own, who don't have the spirit and passion for play of Hopkins Ultimate!

All of us who were there to watch you were cold, but proud of you!!

Thank you to Steve Bumsted, Cory Goddard, Mark Mekler and Ken Raskin for traveling with us, and helping me keep everything running fairly well all weekend. And most of all a HUGE thanks to the two coaches, who went to Winnipeg with us this year, Erin Mirocha and Mike Born. Without your infinite wisdom, patience and sense of humor among other things, our players would never get to have these great experiences!

To those of you looking for pictures; the shutterfly site had some technical difficulties, so I'm having trouble getting them up, but I'll post on the blog once they're available

HBTS return

For those of you looking for the bus who haven't seen the twitter updates, we are expecting it to arrive at Adath around 1:15-1:20...last game went late, but winning made it all worth it!

Sunday, October 16, 2011

HBTS update

Both Black and Silver played extremely well yesterday, in fairly typical Winnipeg weather conditions. The morning started out very cold, but with less wind; as it warmed up the wind picked up as well and definitely made some of the games a little more interesting!

Hopkins Black only allowed 5 points to be scored against them all day throughout 4 games, and had one shutout! They have a first round bye this morning and will be watching Silver as they wait to see who they'll play at 10:35.

Hopkins Silver played really well also, winning 3 of their 4 games, holding seed, and only allowing 8 points in the games they won! They only lost to the #1 seed in their pool!

The Championship game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 so we should be on the road @4:00 as in previous years. We'll update via the blog or twitter once we're back over the border.

Hold Back the Snow Departure Information

We will be departing from the back of the Adath parking lot on Friday AT NOON, which means you need to be there AT 11:30 to check in and load your gear on the bus.

If you haven't already turned your PERMISSION SLIP in, you must have this with you in order to get on the bus.

You must have your PASSPORT with you in order to get on the bus. Just because you sent me the number doesn't mean you're covered; you need the real thing to cross the border.

If you don't eat lunch before getting on the bus, bring something with you, as well as snacks for the bus; we won't be stopping until dinner time. Please be considerate when choosing food to bring on the bus and don't bring anything really messy or smelly.

The forecast right now is for highs in the low 50's, lows in the high 30's and a slight chance of rain on Saturday. Bring layers! If I see you out there shivering, without leggings or long sleeves, you will get no sympathy, because you have been warned!(okay, the mother in me will probably want to find you a jacket, but I won't be happy!). If you have any questions about what you need to bring, see Mia's post with information about what to pack or ask the coaches or captains at practice tonight.

If you haven't already paid Zach for your jersey remember to bring your $15.00 to practice tonight.

Parents; FYI, we are staying at the Viscount Gort Hotel in Winnipeg. It's equidistant from Assinoboine Park, where HBTS is held, as the Holiday Inn we've stayed at the last few years. They were doing some construction, so we needed to find another location.

Cub Fundraiser

So far, I'm working all alone tomorrow morning...if anybody has a little time to help out it would be greatly appreciated! Even if it's just part of the shift, it's helpful.

We could still use a couple volunteers for the 10-2 shift at Cub tomorrow...we're almost done for the season, but we need to finish up the rest of October. Other than tomorrow's first shift, I think the only other empty slots are for the 10-2 shift October 27th, our final day this year. If anyone is able to work one of these shifts please sign up on the calendar; the link is to the right!

HBTS Packing List

Hey, HUrt! So, for those of you who have never been to Winnipeg, or any other out-of-town tournament, this list will give you an idea of what to pack. As a team, we are always "toasty warm". This means that you come to the field prepared with everything you will need to stay warm and dry all day long. If you have any more questions about what you'll need, ask any of the captains or coaches at practice, and we'll help you out.

Please remember to bring $15 to Zach Mekler for your jersey.

Friday:

The bus ride to Winnipeg is about nine hours long, so you'll want to be dressed comfortably. I'd also recommend dressing in layers because you never know what the temperature on the bus will be. Bring homework, movies, pillows, blankets, and snacks (in a backpack, everything else will be going under the bus). Also, remember to have your passport and wallet on you, as we will be stopping for dinner and you will need your money.

Friday Night:

PJs
Toiletries

Saturday:
Socks, non-cotton if you have, and lots of them
Cleats, possibly two pairs (if you have them) for back up
Shoes to wear to the fields (tennis shoes are usually best)
Sweats to wear to the fields and during your Bye round
Long under armor tights (cold gear)
Compression shorts
Regular shorts
Dark and white shirt- we are getting jerseys that we will be wearing but bring these anyways
Long-sleeved under armor shirt
Windbreaker/rain coat (its supposed to rain this weekend, so be prepared)
Gloves
Hat/headband for when it's cold
LOTS OF LAYERS- if it gets cold you will want them
Ultimate bag with a disc, reusable water bottle and your own snacks(the team will be providing "field food" snacks, but bring your own if you like something special! And I can't reiterate enough how important it is to bring a reusable water bottle, or 2...we feel strongly about not buying plastic water bottles for the team this year! ...Sara)
A couple big garbage bags to put your ultimate bag in if it rains
Any other gear you'll need (pre-wrap, tape, inhaler, etc.)

Saturday Night-

At the hotel we are staying at there is a pool and hot tub. If you are interested bring a swimsuit.
PJ's
Toiletries

Sunday-

Same clothing as Saturday and a change of clothes to wear on the bus ride home and stuff for the ride home (see Friday) We usually change right away and head home, we will not be returning to the hotel.

If you have any questions please let me know, also if you are a returning player and have advice on something else to bring please comment and let everyone know also. Get excited! This is a great tournament!

Exit 69 Sunday!

For those joining us in Northfield tomorrow, carpool times and rules are the same as yesterday.

Please leave Lindbergh NO LATER than 6:30am.

There will be a lot more people, so Seniors and Juniors should be prepared to drive.  Please bring a light, a dark, at least 2 water bottles (this tournament has trouble keeping the refill stations full), snacks etc.  If you have a pair of turf cleats, you're going to need them...the ground at these fields is hard.

We won pool H today, and played CUT in the crossover.  See Twitter for updates from that game.  We still have a shot to finish 9th (of 32 college teams) so don't forget your swag.

Thanks,
Erin

Exit 69 Tournament

Exit 69 tournament
-- I hope every one is excited for a great weekend of ultimate in Northfield. Exit 69 is a varsity try out tournament so you know if you have been invited. we will be meeting at the lindbergh parking lot at 6:20 and leaving NO LATER THAN 6:30. We will leave without you if you aren't there. Our first game is at 8:30 and it is against the first seeded team in our bracket, that means come ready to play, get a good night sleep the night before, and get ready to beat some college teams.

We will be done on saturday by about 3 and expect to be back to lindbergh around 4:30, we are carpooling so seniors and juniors plan on driving. Bring a light, a dark, water, and snacks for the day to stay energized. It all starts here; let's do it big.

Winnipeg permission slip

I need a signed permission slip from everybody traveling to Winnipeg. I'll put a link to the form in this post, and you can either bring it to practice or to the bus next Friday, but remember, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET ON THE BUS WITHOUT IT! So, you may want to do it ahead of time :)

3) This weekend is Exit 69, a Varsity tryout tournament. Carpool details will be posted shortly. We have a very small squad on Saturday (if you are in 10th-12th grade and you can attend on Saturday, please let me know) - but our full squad on Sunday would love some spectators!

4) We may have found a field with lights! Stay tuned for a location change for next week.

Estimated Return time: Midnight October 16th

In order to post in the comments below you must:
Have a valid passport

Toasty Warm

Hurtems,

A quick reminder about "toasty warm" - it is every Hurtem and Hertet's responsibility to be prepared for any weather situation. You should have appropriate layers in your bag at all times. Better to have too many layers and not use them then to shiver through a practice.

This week is the first of many chilly ones - so please bring the right gear. If you (or your parent) are unsure about what to bring to practice, please take the time to ask a captain or a coach.

We have the field at 6pm tonight. While you put your shoes on and start warming up, please be respectful of other athletes who may be using this field before we do.

Erin

Board positions/Board meeting/

Parents, just a reminder that we still have a few positions left on the Board; as we announced at the meeting last night we still need a team parent for both the Varsity and JV teams, as well as a Board secretary. We can always use parent's help for small projects as well, and don't forget the final weeks of our Cub fundraiser! We will be working on some new fundraising initiatives in the next few weeks, and will keep you informed.

If you have any interest in joining the Board, please join us at our first meeting of the season this evening:

Registration will also take place, with all forms available at the meeting. Forms will also be available this weekend on the blog for you to print and bring with you if you'd like.

Registration information-forms

There have been some questions regarding registration forms. The link that had been up was for last season's forms. I apologize; I didn't realize it was being used. I will try to upload all 2011-12 season forms in the next day or two. All forms will be available at our registration meeting, which will be announced later today...I'm sorry for the delay, but we had a glitch with the high school scheduler. Once we get a confirmation I will post information.

Do not bring any forms or money with you to practice tonight! If you have any, they are outdated!

Planning ahead-Winnipeg trip

We are planning on sending 2 teams to Winnipeg to play in the Hold Back the Snow tournament once again this year. We will be leaving on Friday, October 14th and returning on Sunday, October 16th. We are limited by tournament rules as to how many people we can put on our roster, and last year weren't able to take everyone who wanted to go. Some things that may play a factor in decisions, you'll have no control over, such as taking older players over younger. But, that being said, you can prepare by doing some of the following;

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A VALID PASSPORT!! YOU WILL NOT BE GOING ON THE TRIP IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE AND CAN'T PROVIDE SARA WITH THE INFORMATION THE MONDAY BEFORE THE TRIP.

ATTEND PRACTICE, AND LET YOUR COACH KNOW(ONCE OFFICIAL PRACTICES START)IF YOU WON'T BE THERE.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE WORKED AT THE CUB FUNDRAISER THIS SUMMER OR THAT YOU OR A FAMILY MEMBER ARE SIGNED UP TO DO SO~WE STILL HAVE 2 MONTHS OF THURSDAYS LEFT, WHICH REPRESENT A LOT OF MONEY TO THE TEAM...YOUR COACHES WILL BE CHECKING TO SEE IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN THIS AS WE TOLD YOU IT WAS REQUIRED LAST SPRING. ONCE SCHOOL STARTS THE AFTERNOON SHIFT CAN BE 3-6, SO PEOPLE CAN COME WORK RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL.

Parents, this is a great trip to come along on! We will once again be travelling by coach bus with wireless Internet, and the kids love to have a good cheering section during their games! We will have all the details including the cost for players and parents soon!

NEXT LEVEL ULTIMATE CLINIC

Hurt players and potential players; there are still spots available for the Next Level Ultimate clinic being held at Lake Nokomis tomorrow through Saturday from 9-4. This is a wonderful way to jump start your season and learn new skills from some talented Ultimate players and coaches. Next Level is run by Ben Feldman, a HURT alum, and a great ultimate player! Next Level sponsored our varsity team this year, and we are very proud to be affiliated with them.

Ben has indicated that it's possible to attend the clinic even if you aren't able to be there all three days. Many of our team members will be leaving early for captain's practice tomorrow. Please contact Ben at the Next Level website if you are able to attend! Lets show some support for our sponsor!

YCC weekend

Hurtems,

Just wanted to let everyone know that our very own Ryan Franklin is gracing the homepage of USA Ultimate today following the YCC tournament.

We had an amazing number of Hurt players and alumni representing Minnesota on the Open U19, Open U16 and Mixed teams. Everyone played well, and though I wasn't able to get over and watch the U16 teams - the stories I heard about our Hurtems were all positive.

I'm also incredibly proud of the number of Hurt players who volunteered or came out to support the Minnesota teams. A big thank you to everyone who did so.

Our season is right around the corner - I hope you've been using these beautiful days to get out and throw. See you soon!

YCC - Scorekeepers needed

Hurtems, Hertets & Parents-

In less than two weeks the annual USA Ultimate Youth Club Championships tournament is happening at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

The tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday, Aug 13-14, and they need scorekeepers throughout the weekend. It's not a hard job, and you have the best seat in the house for some great ultimate.

Many of your teammates are playing in this tournament, and from a club perspective it's a very good opportunity to show your non-ultimate friends what we're all about (ahem, recruit!). Hopkins has been really good at providing volunteers at this event in the past few years, so let's keep it going!

To volunteer, contact:
Dave Gregg (612-280-6417)
2011 YCC Volunteer Coordinator
Volunteer signup: http://mnhsultimate.org/volunteeruc.aspx
Tournament information: http://www.usaultimate.org/competition/youth_division/youth_club_championships/default.aspx

...by the way...
Saturday the 13th, Erin will be playing in the YCC Coaches exhibition game at the NSC stadium. So if you volunteer on Saturday - you can stay and heckle :)

Cub Foods Fundraiser

Players, we need you to spend some time at the Cub food wagon!! All of you should be working at least one shift this summer, preferably more, to make sure we have enough help every week, and to ensure that we're representing Hopkins Ultimate positively to the community. There are 5 more Thursday's at Cub before school starts and I really want to see the team pitching in. We've had a lot of parent volunteers, and a few players who've worked multiple shifts, but now that people are returning from camp it's time to finish the summer strong!

The link to the calendar is on the right

This money benefits all of you, so you all need to participate in earning it!

NexGen vs. SubZero on August 7th

Hurt'ems and Hertets (and curious parents),

Have you heard of the NexGen ultimate tour?

The tour's mission is to promote ultimate by providing access to elite level college players through youth workshops and showcase games with the best club teams in the world.

The last stop on to tour is Minneapolis and our very own Greg Arenson is hoping that we can help him promote both the workshop and the game versus Sub Zero.

The workshop is a really exciting opportunity for youth players to learn with someone like the current Callahan winner and other great college players like Greg. Check out http://www.nexgentour.com/workshops/information. Players should register online.

Also, the game versus Sub Zero will be in the National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine, a great venue. Please check out the website www.nexgentour.com.

Feel free to forward this on to your other ultimate playing friends - watching the game will be an excellent RECRUITING opportunity (ahem, bring some new girls especially!).

As you all may know, Greg is a current Greyduck player and has played on SubZero in past years. There are other HUrt alums (like Klaney) who have made SubZero this year or who are playing with NexGen who will also be in attendance.

I'm sure they will put on quite a show!

U16 team needs more players!

All,

The Minnesota High school league is working to put together a U16 open squad for the Youth Club Championships in August (13-14).

They currently have 6 players on the roster and need more. To be eligible, a player must not have turned 16 before June 1, 2011.

Any players that are interested are welcome. Rosters are due in 3 weeks, so please respond ASAP.

The team will participate in the MUDI tournament in Maple Plain on July 23-24 and at YCC's August 13-14. Right now they practice twice a week, but you should still email the coach even if you can only participate at the tournaments.

If you have any questions, please email Johnsandahl@gmail.com.

YCC

Hurt'ems,

The summer is when you get better. Think about what kind of season you want to have next year, and use the opportunities you have to make it happen.

Play ultimate at the highest level you can as often as you can. The Youth Club Championship tryouts and summer league start next week and the sign ups are now open online:

http://www.mnhsultimate.org/summerleague.aspx
http://mnhsultimate.org/ycc.aspx

This is for everyone, there are u19 teams (open, mixed and womens) and a u16 open team - the more Hurtems we have on these teams, the better. Even if you're not sure you're going to be around this summer, please go to the tryouts just to see what it's like.

Remember to:
Heal.
Throw and catch often.
Get stronger (to prevent injury).
Get in shape.

If you need individual feedback about your game and what you need to do this summer, please ask one of your coaches.

Great season Hurt!

Ultimate Peace

Dear Hurt,
I've been speaking with many of you interested parents and players over the past few months about Ultimate Peace, so I wanted to share some information with the entire group. Ultimate Peace is a non-profit, youth-immersion, ultimate frisbee camp for Palestinian and Israeli kids. The week-long over-night summer camp in Akko, Israel unites these children, ages 11-15, teaching them the rules and values of ultimate. Intently apolitical, camp UP's mission is to "To build bridges of friendship, understanding and fun for youth from different social and cultural backgrounds around the world...Ultimate Peace projects will practice, model and convey our five core principles: mutual respect, friendship, non-violence, integrity, and fun."

The camp brings together around 45 American coaches and 30 local coaches/community organizers/translators with the 175 kids. Every team has a random mix of kids, drawing from three equal groups: Arab-Israeli, Jewish-Israeli, and Palestinian (West Bank), (at least) one Hebrew and one Arabic speaker, two American coaches, and two CITs. I am a counselor and it is the most amazing thing I have ever done.

I wanted to share this with Hurt because there are many opportunities for our players to get involved. The camp is always looking for youth counselors-in-training to participate. I think it would be really cool for a Hurtem to represent Hopkins Ultimate in Israel. I know the head coach and camp director very well; it would not be hard to get involved. Also, as a non-profit, much of the funding is from donations and fundraisers from teams like Hopkins. This is first time ultimate has been used primarily to promote peace and understanding.

Anyway, I just wanted to give you a little information. Please visit Ultimatepeace.org for more. Leave a comment or question and I'll get back to you, or e-mail me directly at daniel.curme@gmail.com.

Best,
-Curme

Hopkins State Schedule

Team schedules have been posted online at:

http://scores.usaultimate.org/scores/#youth-open/tournament/8789

Parents can follow scores online as games are completed, but really, wouldn't you rather be there?

Erin's note: Hurtems! home tournaments still require full KITS - learn from the tournaments you attended this year and get better. This time of year, your cleats are probably either busted or brand new - please be smart: bring a back up pair, or tools to keep your cleats together.

As Chandler said, be at the fields at 8:15 at the latest.

More Banquet information

We are looking for 15 families to provide 2 dozen cookies or bars for our banquet. The team will provide beverages. If you'd like to bring sweets, please click on this sweets link, which will bring you to a sign up sheet. If you are bringing sweets please plan on arriving a few minutes early or make arrangements to drop your food off to Sara earlier in the day.

I understand there has been much frustration with the lack of a "plan" for the banquet. I did ask for volunteers to plan it at the spring meeting, and had no takers. My first (Ultimate) priority for the past month and a half has been travel and tournaments, oh yeah, and Cub...Please know that even though it may look like nothing is being done, behind the scenes a lot of things are happening. We have picked and had to cancel more days than I can count, along with locations that were only available on certain days. It's an extremely busy time of year, and we'll never be able to pick a date that works for everyone. We're hopeful that a majority of the players and parents are able to attend Monday night.

Parents, please think about how you would like to be involved in HURT next season as we will spend a couple minutes talking about volunteer opportunities. And bring your calendars~we will have the Cub calendar out for everyone to sign up!

Looking forward to seeing all of you Monday night!

Banquet - Monday June 6th at 7:30pm

Dear Family,

After much hunting for a venue and an available date, we have decided to have the Banquet on Monday June 6th at 7:30pm at the Brookview Park picnic structure.

We tried really hard to find a date/time that didn't directly interfere with graduation parties, confirmations, graduations, etc. This was the best option we were able to get.

More details will be posted, but we wanted everyone to be able to get this into their calendar.

Thanks,

JV Game @ Edina-B

Hey JV -

We were able to arrange a final Thursday game for you. The game will be at Edina-B. The field is different than the one on the league website. It is at the high school. Parking is available on top of the hill (to the West of the fields on the map).

The carpool will meet at Lindbergh at 5:20 for departure at 5:30. Please plan to arrive at the fields by 5:45. As usual, please post intentions to play, requests for rides, and offers to drive in the comments.

Update 6/1: We will have a short roster due to graduation, so Varsity boys and girls are welcome too! We need more firm commitments on drivers. Please post if you can drive and how many you can take.

Banquet

Due to lots of conflicts, we're still looking for a good day to schedule the banquet.

It will be next week sometime, after State.

Summer Opportunities

We are starting to get questions about summer ultimate opportunities. I'll outline a few here, but feel free to add more info or ask questions in the comments:

YCC

The Youth Club Championships is a summer club team preparing for a tournament on August 13-14 in Blaine. This year, in addition to the U-19 division, there is also a U-16 division, so JV players should seriously consider trying out if they will be around for the summer. Tryouts are a great opportunity to play ultimate and get better, so please consider trying out regardless of whether you think you will make the team.

Tryout details are not posted yet, but will go up at mnhsultimate.org/ycc.aspx. There will also be flyers at State.

Luther

This summer, Luther College will host its third annual Ultimate Frisbee Training Camp, June 23-26. We invite your high school teams, youth clubs and individuals ages 14-19 to join us to learn the skills and spirit of Ultimate! A comprehensive camp where beginners learn the ins and outs of Ultimate and experienced players sharpen both technical and tactical skills.

Have players register now at: https://www.luther.edu/programming/camps/frisbee/

Bring five or more campers and receive a team discount!

Next Level

http://www.nextlevelultimate.com/

Next Level Ultimate offers high school players the opportunity to partake in a 5-day overnight summer camp focused on improving at Ultimate Frisbee. Players local to our camp sessions also have the option to attend as day-commuters at a reduced admission price. This next summer, Next Level will also be offering a day clinic for both boys and girls in Minneapolis, MN. Our overnight camps attract high school players on both a national and international level.

A note for Parents about State

Hurt family,

As with all tournaments, State relies on the efforts of volunteers to run smoothly. As I'm sure you noticed with Hustle, a lot of the work that needs to be done does not necessarily interfere with your ability to watch Hopkins teams play (set up on Friday, parking attendant in the am etc.).

Please take a moment to visit http://mnhsultimate.org/volunteeruc.aspx to see if there is anything you're able to help with, and forward this on to Alumni and anyone else from our family who wants to support us at State.

Simply put: State can't happen without Volunteers.
Thank you for all that you do, your kids and the coaches appreciate you!

Erin

JV Game vs. Sibley A

We have 13 players for tomorrow's game who are available to leave early. We will be meeting at Lindbergh at 3:40, leaving at 3:45. This should give us plenty of time to travel to Sibley and have a decent warm-up before game-time (about 5pm).

- If you are not listed and want to come to the game, please post in the comments.
- If you want to come, need a ride, but cannot be at Lindbergh by 3:40, please post in the comments. We'll try to figure something out.

Drivers: Raskin (4), Taylor (4), Lovagnini (4), Locketz (2)
Players: Raskin, Lovagnini * 2, Margolis, Krelitz, Kaminsky, Shear, Franklin, Herzog, Brandys, Taylor, Locketz, Mintzer

Thanks again for your patience and flexibility.

JV Game vs. Sibley A - Take Two

Many players who had an opinion on Thursday's game vs. Henry Sibley failed to register them on the blog, as requested. I had to hear about scheduling conflicts second hand at practice. You have one more opportunity to register your availability for the game.

This is a big game against a competitive varsity opponent. It may also be our last league game before State. Please make every attempt to make it.

Players, if you intend on attending Thursday's game, please post the earliest time you can meet at Lindbergh for departure by 5pm tomorrow. We'll come up with something that works for the majority of the team.

Here is the information from the previous commenters:

Drivers: Raskin (3 players), Locketz (4 players?), Lovagnini (4 players), Lieberman (tentative, unknown capacity, possibly late departure).

Players:
As early as 3:30: Raskin, Lovagnini * 2
Not specified (presumably OK for early departure): Margolis, Krelitz, Kaminsky, Shear, Franklin, Herzog
Potential timing issues (more details required): Locketz, Lieberman

We could definitely use more player commitments, but we can't plan a carpool without knowing how many players will be attending. Likewise, we won't force an early start if it doesn't work for the team, but we need to know your plans ASAP.

JV State Participation

Our State Tournament rosters need to be finalized ASAP. Please post your intent to participate in the State Tournament (June 4-5) in the comments, particularly if you know you are unable to come.

JV Schedule this week - Response Needed

Based on your feedback, we've added an additional JV practice this week. Monday's practice will be at the Minnetonka Civic Fields at 5:00pm, and Tuesday's practice will be the usual at HHS at 6:15pm.

The JV is scheduled to play at Henry Sibley A this week. They have asked us if we would be willing to move the game earlier in the evening. I realize this may cause transportation issues with our team and may involve leaving shortly after school. Please relay your thoughts about 1) whether you can drive, and 2) how early you can depart. I'd like to get back to Sibley no later than Tuesday.

Update: 2pm Monday - JV Practice ends at 7pm tonight.

Blogger Outage / Outrage

Hello Hurt JV,

I know we're gearing up for a big tournament tomorrow, so hiccups with the blog are coming at an inopportune time. Basically, Blogger had an issue during routine maintenance. Blogs were restored to their state from few days ago, and posts/comments during the affected period (roughly Wednesday/Thursday) should hopefully be restored soon. In the meantime, we have lost many of the responses that you've posted regarding carpool driver and player commitments for the weekend.

Here is what Blogger has to say about the issue. http://buzz.blogger.com/2011/05/blogger-is-back.html

In the meantime, Chandler Taylor has sent out some emails regarding tomorrow's carpools. We are asking all Granite City participants to repost your plans for the weekend in the original post and/or respond to Chandler's emails.

Thanks for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience.

One more thing: some of you were confused by my comments on the original post. To reiterate, we are playing in the B/C pool with 5 other JV teams. Our games will be held at North Junior High School in St. Cloud. Yes kids, other towns have a North JHS too. See this link for location. There will be a tournament tent at this location for score reporting, but the captains meeting will be at Whitney Park.

Westerns - what to bring

Varsity,

Note that our flight leaves at 7am, the carpool will leave from Lindbergh a LOT earlier than that.

I cannot stress enough the importance of packing this weekend. We have to plan for every possible situation, and there are USAU rules about jerseys/shorts that we have to follow.

weather in Corvallis - our "2011 home weather" is wind/rain, let's show the other teams how to stay Toasty Warm.

Packing list for the weekend:
your kit (BOTH jerseys, HUrt shorts, cleats, tights, reusable water bottle etc.)
rain gear: rain coat, trash bag, winter hat, gloves/handwarmers
many socks - wool or synthetic
2x LAYERS
outerwear: sweats, a warm jacket, sweatpants/rain or wind pants
snacks - high protein items and carbs that are easy to digest
(beef jerky, clif shot blox, trail mix, gatorade powder, gu, granola bars etc.)
a disc with your name/team written on the back in dark permanent ink

street clothes
toiletries
Liquids policy
Photo ID
USAU membership card if you have one (just in case)
your inhaler, or any other meds you need
Swagger

try for one carry on + a backpack (your personal item). If you're planning on checking a bag - the extra cost is on you, and you need to tell Sara before we leave the HS.

Represent the family.
Erin

Family: want to follow along? there's a lot of info right here

**For those of you who have a tendency to get pulled over in the security line (ahem): empty your water bottles, don't pack bug spray/sun screen in more than 3oz amounts, and get your electronics ready in a separate bin.

Varsity game tonight @ Edina

Hurtems,

As we discussed yesterday, please be at Lindbergh at 4:30 to depart for Pamela Park which is near 62 and Valley View Rd. Game time is 6pm.

It's supposed to be rainy.

JV - Granite City Classic

Players: please post whether you will be there Saturday and/or Sunday.

Parents and players: we'll need drivers both days/both ways. Please post in the comments if you can drive, have room for X players in your vehicle, and which day.

We'll plan to meet at Lindbergh at 7:00 a.m. each day for a 7:15 departure. Whitney Field is located at 1445 Northway Drive.

Update from Coach Mike: Our B/C Pool games are scheduled at North Junior High. Please arrive there instead of at Whitney Park. Captains - come to Whitney Park to represent us at the Captains Meeting on Saturday morning at 9:00 sharp. Our first game will be at 9:30 AM both days, and our last game should be finished by 2:30 or 2:45 each day. We will have exactly 3 games each day.

Monday, May 09, 2011

Schedule this week is posted

Hurtems,

Practices and games are posted for this week. A couple notes:

1) a tentative practice schedule was communicated to Hurtems at the tournament this weekend, Hurtems please remember to communicate with your parents.
2) Games are scheduled by the MN High League and posted on their website - which you can check if games haven't yet been posted on this blog.

The High School league is using scores from Hustle this weekend to improve the match ups they schedule, and so have been working all day inputing those into their database. It's a LOT of work.

I post schedules as soon as I am aware they've been published. Please have patience - we're doing the best we can.

Hustle Responsibilities (JV Edition)

Hey JV,

As you should know, every HURTem will have responsibilities to ensure that the Hustle is a successful tournament. This year, the JV is charged with the following:

1 - We will need a minimum of 5 players (and one supervising parent) each morning to help with the parking lot. Your job will be to make sure the first arriving cars park in an orderly fashion. You will not miss any game time and should be released early enough to warm up with the rest of the team, but you will be required to arrive early - 8AM for Saturday's volunteers, 8:30 on Sunday.

2 - Like last year, the JV is responsible for field cleanup on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The ENTIRE JV will stay until trash bags and cones are collected, and a final field sweep has been completed. If you're fortunate, you might get to ride on a golf cart (whoo!)

Many of you have already told me about conflicts you have this weekend. If you are coming to all or part of the Hustle, please post your attendance plans/conflicts in the comments. Also, please comment if you would like to volunteer for parking duty on Saturday or Sunday morning. We are also looking for at least one parent supervisor for both days.

Thanks,

MB

This week's schedule

Congratulations to our Hopkins family for their performance this weekend at Mudbath! Thank you to all the parent drivers, our logistical expert Sara, and all the players for their contributions to a successful weekend.

This week's practice and game schedule has been posted - but there are some details that will be updated shortly.

HUSTLE is this coming weekend!!

All Hurtems have tournament responsibilities, which will be communicated at practices/games this week and also on the blog. If you want to help, feel free to comment below.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Hustle is USAU sanctioned. If you have not registered for Hopkins Ultimate, completed a waiver and paid your dues (so we can secure your USAU membership), you will not be allowed to play at the tournament.

Thanks!
Erin

Madison details

Please be at the back of the Adath parking lot no later than 3:15, for a 3:30(or earlier if every one is on time!) departure.

Due to a couple of questions regarding attendees, the carpool list will not be posted because I can't finish it until I get a FINAL count of players that doesn't change. When you arrive at the Adath parking lot you will find out which vehicle you are in. Please arrive on time and check in with me for your assignment so that we can leave quickly and try to avoid too much rush hour traffic. Each car will be divided by team, so that parent drivers only have one host home they have to drop off and pick up from.

Parents who are traveling with us this weekend besides myself are; Marni Bumsted, Barb Schoonover, David Seffren, Andrea Shapiro, Tom Perry, Dan Mosow, Ken Raskin, Jim Shear, Debbi Pavelka, and Chandler Taylor. Thank you all in advance for joining us this weekend; I hope you all have as much fun watching the kids play and cheering them on as I always do! We have some very talented kids, and what they can do as a team is pretty amazing! Even off the field; I've had the privilege of being told by a number of hotel clerks and managers that we're welcome back any time because we're one of the most polite and best behaved teams they've had in their hotel. I shared with the boys that I was as proud of that as their accomplishments on the field, and I'm sharing it with you now, because I'm sure you all feel the same way. Along with teaching Ultimate, the coaches do a wonderful job of instilling a feeling of being a "team family" and looking out for each other; being responsible for each other, and it shows. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated and talented coaches; 6 of them will be with us in Madison this weekend!

The Varsity team will be hosted by Darcy McCann and family
The girls team will be hosted by coach Tallis Boyd's family
and the JV team will be hosted by team member, Mosey Krelitz's mom, Bridget Grams

They are all just a short drive away from the fields where the tournament will take place~

Mudbath - what to bring

Hurtems, Hertets and Hurt parents,

There will be a finalized post of carpools coming soon, promise.

In the next 18 hours, please HYDRATE, REST and FUEL your body (yes, even if you're a parent spectating) - stay away from carbonated beverages, eat protein and pasta, and dream of ultimate in your restful sleep.

A special spectator note: layers are your best friend, and I highly recommend you bring a reusable water bottle and a couple granola bars. Also: Umbrella, Rain Coat, Hiking boots (waterproof) or rain boots, gloves and a winter hat.

Packing list for the weekend:
sleeping bag/pillow (players are sleeping on the floor)
towel, shower kit, swim suit (we shower at Memorial HS)
your kit (jerseys, shorts, cleats, reusable water bottle etc.)
rain gear: rain coat, trash bag, winter hat, gloves/handwarmers
socks
more socks
additional socks
LAYERS - no cotton!
2x LAYERS (you will get wet/muddy; you will need a spare)
outerwear: sweats, a warm jacket.
snacks - high protein items and carbs that are easy to digest
(beef jerky, clif shot blox, trail mix, gatorade powder, gu, granola bars etc.)

This tournament is called MUDBATH for a reason. Planning makes you toasty warm.
Your car time is also good for homework, team bonding and review of strategy.

Remember that your gear has to fit in a full car. Pack smart.
