Upcoming hat tournaments

Hey, there will be two hat tournaments coming up in the next month.

The first is the Eden Praire Hat tourney. I have done this the last two years and I had a ton of fun. It is all high school kids.

here is the info, make sure to fill out the registration form also available at http://www.google.com/base/a/1240635/D7724816351226402552:

The second is the Winter Carnival Hat tourney

here is some info from the organizer:

"I just wanted to give you a heads up to an awesome Hat Tournament January 27 - 28.
We held it last year with sponsorship and had a blast!!! We were able to hand out prize money to 3 places, gave everyone a shirt, a special "winter use only disc" from Dare Devil and tons of sponsorship swag and coupons.

Oh yeah, we played some fun Ultimate at 20 degrees. The Disc Golfers have been holding their "Ice Bowl" event for years so I figured that if D Golfers can throw in the winter so can Ultimate players.
Jose was kind enough to do some picture taking last year and he still has the pics up check them out. Ultimate pics start at #58 for those who do not want to see the Golfers.

http://public.fotki.com/jahernan/sports/ultimate_frisbee/winter_carnival/"

That was a lot of fun and I got a ton of free stuff. I'll provide more info as we get closer.

Grey Duck Jerseys

Some of you have expressed interest in obtaining a U of MN Grey Duck jersey. They are printing this season's jerseys very soon. If you want one, email hotlou@gmail.com this week. The cost is currently $40, but I am in negotiations for a discount for all Hopkins players.

HERt FORCE Girls

HERt FORCE Girls

For the record, there is now practice on Sunday evenings from 7-9p at Hopkins West JH in the Structure. Thanks to the three of you who made it to practice last night and to the one who called to say she couldn't make it. I appreciate you!
Indoor practice maintains that you still bring a disc, water, and wear athletic clothing. Your shoes should be gym shoes, though.

If you haven't heard, we will not be going to Duluth during MLK weekend - the date has been changed to 24-25 February. So keep that weekend open; it would be nice to bring two teams! And no word yet on the St. Ben's tournament, although the rumor has it that it will be scheduled for March.

And we still don't have any indoor space scheduled for the middle of the week; but Ron is working on it! You can do your part by doing plyometrics, going for a run, etc. to stay in Ultimate shape. If you want more info about that, call your captains or coaches.

Stay toasty warm, folks!

Track Practice

Tomorrow we will be starting the first of a series of track practices leading up to acceleration. They aren't mandatory but we will be noting who is showing up to practices.

Finally, the soccer season and my injuries are over so Greg and I should be there every time. They will be Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:55 at the Track by the Athletic Dept. Office. You can leave whenever you need to.

We are going to start slow but eventually really push it but feel free to run however you are comfortable. Don't worry, I am really slow and out of shape.

Greg and I have set the goal to be able to run four miles at a decent rate by the time acceleration starts. I know that sounds like a lot but we will start small. It is important to have a good endurance base for when you start acceleration.

I hope everyone and especially Varsity hopefuls will be there.

Acceleration MN

I have reposted the acceleration thread because many people have expressed interest in doing acceleration but I have not recieved emails from anyone! IF YOU CAN DO ACCLERATION YOU HAVE TO EMAIL ME!

Alright, here is the acceleration plan:

Acceleration will begin Monday, January 8 from 7-8:30 and will continue every Monday and Wednesday for around 6 weeks. It will cost around $120-$150 per participant. The location is 2530 Xenium Lane Plymouth, MN 55441.

This is a very intense program but also very effective. Talk to Michael Arenson or Zach Alter if you want a first hand testimonial. One important element of the workout though is that you must go to almost all of them. Please only sign up if you are dedicated to attending.

This is a very good idea for players looking to go to nationals but is no way mandatory.

If you can FOR SURE (that means talk to your parents) go to Acceleration at the said times send me an email ASAP so I can iron out all the details. There is only room for 16 people right now so email me fast. I will collect checks after I have gotten everything finalized.

for more information on acceleration you can visit the website at http://www.accelerationmn.com/spq.html

Email me ASAP if you plan on doing acceleration

If you have any questions regarding fundraising, Ron Curme is your go-to guy!

LOOKING FOR MORE ULTIMATE?

i know that varsity practice is from 12:30-4 on saturday at Maetzold, but what if i want to play more? show up to Nokomis to be at Squalloween! just be back to practice by 12:30. here's a note from the Tournament Director:

As far as I am concerned everyone is welcome to come, no matter when they have to leave. If people need to leave after one game we can always mix up the teams again. We're going to play by ear a little, and see where things go. But, seeing as this is a fundraiser, we would like to get as many people as possible to come out and play!
Hope to see lots of Hopkins players tomorrow!
Thanks a bunch!

Capt. Pract-Postponed ... Acceleration?

Hey, I'm going to have to postpone captains practice for a few weeks, I am injured and can't really lead it.

Feel free to keep your self in shape though.

Lastly, who would be interested in doing Acceleration MN(completely optional)? WE would do it in January probably, probably about two nights a week, and probably about $185... just loosely who would be interested?

Tuesday, October 31, 2006

B-team practice is now Squalloween

Unless you will be at Varsity tryouts (Saturday, Maetzold, 12:30), Squalloween is the place to be.!

What? South High's Annual Hat Tournament
When? Saturday, November 4th, starting at 10am

Who? HURTems with $10

Just like practice, come prepared for the weather, bring water and some healthy snacks, a light and a dark jersey to go over your costume and anything else you need for the day (inhaler, anyone?). Unlike practice, you'd better have a costume to show how cool you are. It is Squalloween...

HAVE FUN!

FRUCHTER SIGHTING!

Captains Practice Cancelled

I am going to be gone until next week and I am sure many of you are tired from the weekend so Captains Practice is canceled for Tuesday and will resume next week.

It will be more reliable starting on Tuesday Oct. 24, when we will have optional captains practices every Tuesday and Thursday for most of the winter.

Here is the general game plan: Meet at the entrance to the Lindberg center (by the spirit shop), we will do a vertical jump program, then some abs, then some upper body weights and finish off with some throwing outside. We should be done by 4:30 or 5:00 but people can leave anytime they need too.

For those of you who have been coming to previous captains practices here is the vertical jump work out plan we have been using: http://docs.google.com/View?docid=d7sxj9n_0d5zpb3

Silver takes silver

Or was it blue takes silver? I can't remember, it was just such an irresistable headline.

Winnipeg started with a long, but entertaining bus ride. After a quick stop at a food court, we breezed through customs and arrived at our hotel around eight. Players relaxed and got ready for the early morning ahead of them.

Saturday started at 6:40am in the hotel lobby. Then everyone bundled up and headed to the local PanCakery establishment. Unfortanetly, the service was not nearly as good as the food and Hopkins was a little late to the fields that morning.

The four games played by Silver that day were disapointingly one sided and no team was able to gain more the three points on Silver.

Blue on the other hand had a more intersting game against SJR JV B, and were able to pull out a win and go 3-1 on Saturday, only losing to the team that would eventually defeat the A-team in the finals.

Saturday ended with a delicious BBQ put on my the HBTS volunteers and a relaxing evening at the hotel, lounging in the rooms and in the pool. There was also some ice bathing for a few brave souls who hadn't gotten enough cold that day.

With such good results by both teams Sunday, they met in the quarter finals. This was a really fun and intense game by both teams. Both blue silver played like they had something to prove.

Blue was even to tie the game at one point before Silver's experience got the best of them.

Blue then continued to the conselation bracket where they faced Memoral highschool and lost a tough game by two in hard cap. They played great defense and was able to mostly shut down the Wisoconson team that had placed second at Eastern Nationals last year.

This loss sent them to the 7th place game where they matched up against the hometown SJR JV A. The teams played neck and neck but SJR was just able to convert more often and got up 7-4 at soft cap. It was now a game to nine. It a great comeback Blue was able to win 9-8.

Some notable plays and players were:
-Robbie Shapiro for MVP, he handled, he guarded deep, he cut deep, he lead his team of new players to 7th place!
-McKenzie Burke won most improved player for the girls and for what I hear she quite the force on O and D.
-Colin Camp won most improved player for the boys and that was very clear. He was skying silver team players left and right and leaving them on the ground.
-Asa Gotlieb got a key handblock in the 7th place match that lead to the game winning score.
-Josh Klane played a great game as well and had some spectacular handling

Back to the silver team, after winning against the Blue team they went on to face the local MN team Cretin (CDH).

This was a riveting game. Silver was able to go up 2-0 right away, however, one CDH got its fast break offence in the groove they were hard to deal with.

Both teams played fast paced O and traded point until four. Then a series of goal line throw aways and mental errors had Hopkins facing a 7-4 half with the soft cap on. Game to nine.

Relying heavily on our insanely good girls, we were able to gain to bring the score to 7-8 them. Hard cap went off. The next point was fast and furious with both teams turning it over too many times and the person causing all of CDH's turnovers was none other than "Captain" "Toucan" David "Iron Fist" "Swilly Canilly" Canillas. He had three, three! layout D's on one point to tie the game at eights.

It was universe point. I can't even remember what happened this point, but suffice to say with our ladies leading the charge we were able to bring home a W and advance to the finals.

Our last game was sadly less fruitful. It was against the second seed Kalvin from Winnipeg. They had just steam rolled SJR and were now waiting in the finals.

From the start of the game we knew this, they had two great players and they were going to exploit them and that proved to be an understatement. While the rest of their team was decent, these two were elite level players. They both played for the Winnipeg club team known as General Strike and were on the starting line of the Canadian Junior Worlds team.

It took us a while to adjust to their give-and-go, blade hucking offence and we went down 7-1 at half.

The next half we learned from our mistakes and played and interesting zone and tried to keep the disc from their two stars and force their other players too throw it away. This was quite effective, along with throwing to our girls and mismatched boys.

Disapointingly, we had already dug our grave and even with our revamped defence we were only able to score five more points until Kalvin wrapped up the game.

It was a tough loss, ending our two year winning streak, but I feel under windier conditions our superior depth and discipline would have won out.

Some notable plays and players"
-Erica Baken won girls MVP with her stellar handling and recieving along with some always delicious lay outs
-Brian "Deuce" Wilson and Steven "Das Boot" Rubinyi won co-mvps with their telepathic hucks and smooth bids
-David "nicknames" Canillas won MIP for his insane D, this was his break out tournament
-Greg "Snuggles" Milbrath had great tourney and was solid speed on D and a reliable cutter and handler on O

please feel free to add anything else:

Exit 69 Recap

We had a great weekend and an awesome start to Hopkins Open Ultimate.

Our first game Saturday morning was against a fellow high school team, Moundsview. We won this game pretty handily even though we were a little slow getting started.

Our next game was against the College team Eau Claire. They were not so experienced and we beat them, trading points until hard cap. Most notable, Sam Brickwedde got a Callahan in this game.

The final game of our pool was against Stout who was on par with Eau Claire. Luckily we won the flip and got the first downwind point. Just like previously, we traded until hardcap and thus won our pool.

We were now moving from the E pool to the A bracket. Our next game was against a number of experienced players, who played in the club circuit as Liquid Assets who had previosly beaten CUT, the #1 seed. They were a little too advanced for our many new players and we lost a good game to them.

That ended Day One. We had lots of players and not everyone got a lot of playing time but we accomplished alot and broke seed.

Day two began a little later than expected...

We "won" our first game against Milwaukee 15-0 ... when they failed to show up to the tournament, so we had a bye until 12:30.

Our first game of the day was against Iowa State. We started out a little slow and they go a few break points on us. Half came at 7-5. We answered big in the second half with two big break points to get a safe lead. The the game got pretty intense and we traded point until it was 11-10 us, game to 13, win by two. We got the downwind to bring it to 12-10. We could have just won the game on the downwind but we were able to score an amazing upwinder to win the game 13-10 and get into the "Chump"ionship (game for ninth place).

Our final game was against the hometeam St. Olaf and we didn't have much of a chance but we were still able to work the disc and get a number of good points.

Overall, we finished 10th out of 32 college and club teams and broke our original seed of 24.

Some highlights and notable plays include:

Greg's huge up wind hucks.

Alters 5 for 5 scoobers including one monster 30+ yarder, additionaly he domminated the skies with a broken toe and a stomach full of McDonalds hashbrowns.

Sam B. got a nice Callahan.

Scar had a great first tournament and was a TMVP runner-up.

I had a some nice break like this one to clinch the Iowa game.

Das Boot won TMVP with just all around consistant play and some beautiful hucks.

HalloWinona

On the weekend of October 28-29 I am trying to get a team going for the college tournament HalloWinona in Winona, Minnesota. It is not going to be officially affiliated and run as a Hopkins HUrt ultimate program, it is instead just an attempt by me to get some of the guys from the team to head down to Winona with me for that weekend and play some disc. If you are interested in going, e-mail me at slr112788@hotmail.com. The cost is going to be 20$ if i can get 12 people to go. If enough women show interest I can put us in the co-ed bracket as well. I need to know this info in the next week so if you want to come e-mail me asap.
-Rubeans, Raboon, Das Boot, etc.

Practice Time Change

It's getting dark too early! Please note that practices on Mondays and Wednesdays with the coaches will now be from 4:15p to 7:15p.
I also encourage you to bring your water in a reusable container so you don't run the risk of leaving garbage on our field and having to do sprints for it. The city of Hopkins is nice enough to let us use their space - let's be responsible citizens!
And for those of you looking to go to Nationals this year (Black and HERt FORCE girls), don't forget to check out the optional Captain's practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3p (meet by Lindbergh center doors). It's a great opportunity to strengthen your body and work on your throws.

Check it out

I have added a new page to the right called Carl's Tricks and Trivia. I am going to be posting, obviously, tricks, and trivia on it.

The cool part about this is that you can earn points and win stuff, like discs, jereseys, who knows what, by answering triva ...

The way this works is I will post, pretty much daily, either a trick or piece of trivia. If it is a piece of trivia, the first person to answer (by posting a comment)will win a point.

So check often.

Captain's Practice and Info Update

Here is a list of things players and their parents should be aware of:

1. I am going to start holding Captains Practices Tuesday and Thursday after school. These are optional, however, reccomended for people who see themselves playing at nationals this year. We will focus primarily on conditioning and physical training and then just do some throwing. For instance, I have been doing this vertical jump excercise that has already added 5 inches to my vertical and I would be willing to share it with anyone who came. We will meet in the Lindberg center by the doors to the outside at around 3:00.

2. The informational meeting originally scheduled for Sunday October 1st has been rescheduled to Saturday, September 30th at 12:30pm at the Hopkins High school cafeteria.

3. For those interested, the Club Sectionals tournament went well today. Our first game started out pretty rough with a lot of dropped passes and miscues but we got it together as the day went on. Those who are coming tomorow should meet at Lindberg at 7:15.

4. Anyone who want to go to Winnipeg should read the post below and follow its directions.

5. See you all at practice on Monday!

  3. Whether you have your parents' permission to go
We need to get our list finalized very soon, so if we don't this information from you in the next couple days, it's very unlikely that you'll get to go. So get us the information right away and be sure to tell your teammates to do the same.

Some tips from Coach Kelley

6 WAYS TO EFFICIENT RUNNING:

1- RUN TALL. gravity and weak core muscles cause many runners to "fold" in the middle when their feet land. this sitting-down movement wastes energy. imagine that wires are attached to your shoulders, pulling you up slightly. thrust your hips forward a bit and think "stability" when your foot hits. it's easier to run tall if you've worked your core properly.

2- RELAX. tension in your arms, shoulders, neck, and face reduce efficiency. arms and fingers should be loose. unclench your hands and let your jaw jiggle.

3- LAND ON THE MIDFOOT. a heel-first landing is a brake. it means you're extending your leg out too fa in front of your center of gravity, so it takes more energy to move forward. and it's shaky, so your muscles are working on stabilization instead of forward motion. shorten your stride. it'll feel odd at first, like shuffling, but once you get used to it, focus on thrusting backward with force.

4- RUN SOFTLY. the louder your footfalls, the less efficiently you're running. try running more quietly; you'll be unconsciously switching to a midfoot strike and a shorter, quicker stride.

5- SWING SYMMETRICALLY. check your form on a treadmill in front of a mirror. if one arm is bent more than the other or swings more, you have a musculoskeletal imbalance that can slow you down. target the weaker side with strength and flexibility exercises.

obviously, these help when running in a straight line - but are definitely good to be mindful about when it comes to efficiency. in a game like Ultimate, you sprint faster in the open field by taking faster or longer steps. you must also have speed endurance - this is important only to prevent you from slowing down after repeated short sprints.

more to come.

Winnipeg - Hold Back the Snow

The Hold Back the Snow tournament in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada is October 14-15. Players, parents, and coaches will be traveling in one bus that will depart on October 13 at precisely 2:00 p.m. from the high school parking lot. Boarding will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. No one will get on the bus without the proper paperwork. We will have forms for you to sign, but for now, prepare your

1. Birth Certificate (with official stamp)
2. State Issued ID

You cannot enter Canada without them (unless you have a passport). If you do not have a copy of your birth certificate, you must make an effort to obtain it right away. If you were born in Minnesota, Hennepin County courthouse can usually print a copy for you on the same day you request it. Out of staters will probably have to work much harder.

If you have one, a passport alone is sufficient to cross the border.

Because of space limitations in the bus and hotel, we'll only be sending two co-ed teams to this tournament. Captains and coaches will be communicating how we'll be deciding who will be on these teams.

It is COLD COLD COLD up there. Pack accordingly.

The cost will be approximately $150 per player.

Get those passports or birth certificates ready!

Carwash Cleans Up!

Thank you to everyone who attended the carwash on Saturday. I am proud to inform that it was a great success. We raised exactly $1236.34. That is phenominal! Not to mention we had tons of kids show up and help.

It went very smoothly and thanks to everyone who brought treats to sell. I have to admit that I ate around half of them.

I may have caught a little bit of a cold with all the water but I am for sure going to see you all at practice on Monday!

It was a lot of fun and I know the carwash in January is going to be even better!

Ultimate?

For many parents it can be disorienting for a child to just suddenly say, "I want to play Ultimate frisbee."

"What?" "What is that?" "With the hippies?" "With the dogs?" "Like golf?"

And that is understandable, it is a relatively new sport. Few people have seen it played and fewer still know the rules and culture that is Ultimate frisbee.

So here are some resources that will help both begginner and veteran, player and parent.

This is posted compliments of the UPA website:

"Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, a game of Ultimate is played by two seven-player squads with a high-tech plastic disc on a field similar to football. The object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Ultimate is governed by Spirit of the Game™, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. Ultimate is played in more than 42 countries by hundreds of thousands of men and women, girls and boys."

For the parent it might be tedious to read the entire rule book, so here is a concise version posted below, however all players must read the rule book! This is the link to the UPA 10th edition rules.

Ultimate in 10 Simple Rules

1. The Field: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with end zones 25 yards deep.
2. Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team.
3. Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
4. Movement of the Disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.
5. Change of Possession: When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
6. Substitutions: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.
7. Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
8. Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
9. Self-Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.
10. Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

Lastly here is a helpful FAQ:

Q: What equipment do you need in order to play?
A: Ultimate is one of the least expensive sports to play, as all that’s required for a game is field space and a disc. Most players opt to wear cleats as well, and cones are helpful for marking the boundaries of the playing field.

Q: Are all discs the same?
A: No. Ultimate is played with a 175 gram disc, which is heavier and sturdier than the recreational discs most people are familiar with. The weight, diameter, shape of the rim, and plastic all factor in to how the disc handles. The UPA has developed very rigorous disc standards to ensure that players have access to the highest quality discs possible. The Discraft Ultra-Star 175 gram disc is currently the official disc of the UPA Championship Series.

Q: How long does a game usually last?
A: A typical game is played to 15 points and usually lasts about one and a half hours.

Q: How many people are on a team?
A: Teams have only seven players on the field at one time, but may have as many people on their roster as they choose.

Q: What does it mean when I hear Huck? What about Ho?
A: While Huck may sound similiar to a certain word, in ultimate it simply means a long throw. Ho means a lay out or diving "horizontal" attempt at the disc.

Q: What does Spirit of the Game mean for players?
A: For players it means knowing the rules of the game. It means calling fouls correctly when you see them. It means giving your opponent the benefit of the doubt, assume he is not trying to cheat you. It means if he fouls you, call the foul, but don't get mad, chances are he wasn't trying too. It means getting your team pumped up and staying positive. It means doing your best to make even the most intense game enjoyable to play.

Q: What does Spirit of the Game mean for the parent on the sideline?
A: It means cheering on your child. It means not heckling or yelling when you believe a bad call has been made. It means knowing the rules so you understand what is going on.

does anyone have any other additions or questions?

Practices

Formal practices will be starting up next week. We expect a large number of players, so "formal" is somewhat of a relative term. Our first practice begins at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6. We have the park until we run out of daylight, but practice will probably wrap up around 8:00 p.m., though you'll be free to stick around until it's dark.

Here's an interactive map to the location: Burnes Park. And a static map for those unable or unwilling to click the link:

Burnes Park

Practices will be every Monday and Wednesday at Burnes Park at 5:00 p.m. until further notice.

Organizational Meeting Scheduled! Car wash too!

We have scheduled the organizational meeting for Oct. 1st. There we will give new players the low down on what Hopkins Ultimate is all about and additional: order jerseys, collect dues, inform parents as to practice, game, and tournament schedules, and probably lots of other fun stuff. Basically, this is something you don't want to miss, so put it on your calendar and tell your friends. New and prospective players are welcomed and encouraged to come.

Lastly, we have scheduled a car to help raise funds for the 06-07 season. It is to be held at Mike Bauers Texaco, on Baker Rd and Excelsior, from 10am-4pm. All old and new players are welcome and encouraged to come an volunteer, be it washing cars, carrying signs, or selling goodies. Please come and make sure to tell a friend. Last year we raised over $1000, we can definitely top that.

Zips Tips and Other Great Ultimate Advice

From former HUrt Captain Michael Arenson:
I was just looking on the brown website and saw a link called "zip's tips". What he writes is interesting and seems like it would be very helpful. If nothing else, read 19 May 03: mental game [from Paul Greff] . Would one of you forward this onto carl (I dunno his email)...he may want to do something like this for our website or even copy and paste some of the things Zip says...go to:

HUrt Players make a gold medal showing at Worlds

For those of you who don't keep up on ultimate news, the World Junior ultimate championships (WJUC) wrapped up this week. Youth from all over the world gathered in Boston, MA to shoot it out for the Gold Medal. A number of HUrt players tried out for the team, an accomplishment in itself, most succesful, however were 2006 graduates and Hopkins HUrt captains, Yossi Kakou and Ben "Hollywood" Feldman.

Yossi, known for his pin point hucks, played for the Israeli team and lead them in scoring, playing a pivotal role on the mid-east team. Feldman played an equally important role to bring team USA to its second consecutive gold medal victory. He played extremely well, with the third most scores on team USA and fifth overall, he was a recieving powerhouse.

Captain's Practice; Huge Success

We had our first captain's practice tonight and it was a huge success! I didn't count all the kids but Greg told me there were over forty! It was really cool. We focused mostly on having fun for our first gathering of the '06-'07 season.
After a quick warm up we broke into two groups and did a few drills. Then Greg took half of the kids and did throwing while I did a huck drill. After that we were able to break into four teams! Four teams! We then just scrimmaged for the remaining time.

I am speechless as to how to respond to this practice. It was amazing, the level of new talent, the amount of kids who came, it was just phenomenal. I can't imagine how many people will come when real practices start.

I'll see everyone on Wednesday.

Four Ways to Get ready for fall

1. Throw every day. Especially if it is windy, throw! If it is hot, go to the beach. If it is rainy go to lindberg gym. Work on pivoting wide and releasing your throw low with lots of spin. See if you can throw your backhand with just your wrist or your flick with little arm movement. You can call me or any other player, better yet, call someone who doesn't play(preferably tall) and try and recruit them.

2. Keep active. It is hard to go running or to climb stairs but it's great if you can do that. Otherwise play soccer or tennis or go biking. You might not be in great shape when fall rolls around but at least you'll be able to run a lap or two.

3. Talk it. Watch it. Read it. There are lots of great websites out there (and linked to on the right) that have info, strategy, and free videos of ultimate. Check 'em out, it's almost as good as playing and you can learn a few things. If you are looking for some summer reading there is a book called Ultimate: Techniques and Tactics by James Parinella and Eric Zaslow. It has lots of great strategy.

4. Design a logo or write a cheer. We are always looking for logos to use or cheers to do at games. Don't be shy, I have designed quite a few pieces of crap for Jake and he has only made fun of me once. Also write some cheers, I don't care if you just change the words to a rap or write a haiku (it's 5-7-5 btw).

Anyone have any other suggestions?

"Captain" Canillas New VC Poster Boy

Jake just sent me ad that VC will be using this summer and look who made it to print. Along with such superstars as Steven Rubinyi, Micah Pepper, Steven Finn, Grant Powell, Simon Gotlieb, and Dan "Pokey from _____" Hunt, you can see "Captain" David Canillas D-ing up some big EP guy. You know he is D-ing him up because otherwise the disc would be in the Toucan's hand.

Nice work HUrt...
captain canillas, good as always.
